Hi xx The time is finally upon us. Let us come together to celebrate the many INCREDIBLE releases the women of indie have gifted us with over the past year. This has been a LONG TIME coming and I’m delighted to finally share but I have been labouriously working on since June (mainly the artwork ddd). Now, despite countless cases of label limbo nearly wiping out my indie faves, we have been treated to a hell of a lot of excellent albums over the last few years, but 2017 has truly spoiled us. As the world falls apart, THANK GOD for these fabulous woman, eh? In fact, so fruitful was their labour that I struggled picking entrants for this rate, with the likes of The xx, London Grammar and Wolf Alice falling as I decided to make this a man-free space (sans the hunties participating, obvz). I’m planning on maybe doing an extension rate for these bands in the future so watch that space. But for now, after months of flip-flopping, indecision and last-minute-additions/subtractions, I have finally settled on the six albums that will be competing in this rate. The first major release of the year came in the form of Lorde’s Melodrama, the highly-anticipated follow-up to her world-conquering debut Pure Heroine. After initial concerns surrounding the pre-released material, she shut us ALL the fuck up with what turned out to be an incredible body of work. The build-up to Lana Del Rey’s fourth-ish studio album was equally taxing and cynicism-inducing, but yet again, she blew our expectations into the stratosphere (along with our wigs) with Lust For Life, arguably her strongest released to date. Joining these two veterans is a new entry to the indie pop elite, LA-based synth-poppers MUNA came through with the best debut album of the year in the form of the flawless About U. With 3 spots left to fill (in keeping with the template set by @Petty Mayonnaise with the smash-hit Alt-Pop Girls rate, which rather aptly enjoyed its own set of delays throughout its run), I continued my search. Despite *technically* not being an actual album, I decided to include Charli’s Number 1 Angel because it really is a masterclass is experimental alt-bubblegum (?) pop and with XCX3 nowhere in sight, I don’t know when exactly her next discography rate will be (poor @Number). After much deliberation, I decided to include Haim’s Something To Tell You despite most people hating it, because it’s my rate, not yours. I have no doubt that y’all will be merciless but I’ve already nailed myself to that cross seaux... As it became evident that Sky Ferreira would not be releasing her new album this decade and was too busy with her stupid low-budget art college NY hipster shite to record the damn thing, I began to look for our sixth and final participant. I had also given up on Annie Clarke (St. Vincent) by this point, who was dragging her heels with her album roll out, which I had no time for quite frankly. However, Miss Thang came the fuck through with possibly the album of the 2017, making her perfectly in-time to join the line-up. But WAIT, there’s more! As a true HipsterJustice member, I stan many an artist that many of y’all have never heard of and as such, I’ve decided to use this opportunity to plug as many of my faves as possible. I have compiled an ‘extras’ section consisting of a song from 12 of my favourite female artists from across the ‘indie’ spectrum. Use this as an opportunity to discover something new! If I have time, I may also be dropping some further recommendations throughout the voting period. Voting opens on the 30th of October, but if you wanna somehow submit before then go ahead lol. The purpose of opening the thread early is to allow you to get conformable with the material you’re less familiar with. Voting will close on the 15th of December, due to my clusterfuck of uni deadlines at the end of the term. That roughly works out as a week per section if you include the week-long pre-voting period, so I really do not want to have to extend voting beyond that Friday.
