Best of 2017... Year End

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by NecessaryVoodoo, Nov 14, 2017.

  1. Katy's 'Bon Appétit' is by far my favourite tune of 2017.

Never have the 'whoops' and 'a-ha's' been so perfectly placed in a pop song.

Katy's breathy delivery of the two words 'go ahead' floor me still.

The speed up at 2.15 is so simple but catches me every time.

I think it's the best song the Max Martin factory has ever produced.

The remaining Top 10 from me in no particular order are:

Disco Tits (Tove Lo), LMK (Kelela), Sober (Lorde), Doing It For The Money (Foster The People), So It Goes.... (Taylor), Ti Amo (Phoenix), Strobe Light (Little Dragon), Everything Is Never Enough (Goldfrapp), Secrets (P!nk)

    All killer, no filler!

  2. Fuck, I just started listening to Julien Baker's Turn Out The Lights - consider me crawled into a foetal position in some corner of my room. What an album.

ufint, Heartthrob, LE0Night and 5 others like this.
  3. Also, thanks to @TRAVVV's list I've now started listening to Sofi de la Torre's Flex Your Way Out and it's resonating with me - like this is everything I ever needed.

  4. Oh, leave the car running
    I'm not ready to go
    And it doesn't matter where
I just don't want to be alone
And as long as you're not tired yet
Of talking, it helps to make it hurt less

This year I've started wearing safety belts
    When I'm driving
    Because when I'm with you
I don't have to think about myself
    And it hurts less

    SONGS

2017 – TOP 30 (one song per artist)
#1 Amy Lee – Love Exists
#2 Kelly Clarkson – Slow Dance
#3 Amy MacDonald – Under Stars
#4 Raelynn – Praying For Rain
#5 Lana Del Rey – Love
#6 London Grammar – Hell To The Liars
    #7 Kendrick Lamar – GOD.
    #8 Foo Fighters – Run
    #9 Blanche – City Lights
#10 Linkin Park – One More Light

Amy Lee knocked down the competition. In my LAST FM stats she stays ahead from the competition with over 90 plays. Kelly Clarkson came in late this year with a very strong song I can easily see have more longevity than Amy Lee. Amy MacDonald has had quite the year with me. Seeing her live again was a beautiful moment. Blanche makes sure Eurovision is represented. Honestly, I am positive Linkin Park wouldnot have been this high up on my list if it wasnot for the death of Chester. But that song in combination with the tragic event is a heartbreaking unison.

    #11 Dan Stevens – Evermore
    #12 Lorde – Green Light
    #13 Kelela – LMK
    #14 Anastacia – Reckless
    #15 Sumera – Animal
    #16 Hurts – Beautiful Ones
#17 Carly Rae Jepsen – Cut To The Feeling
    #18 Ke$ha – Praying
#19 Texas – Round The World
#20 Lady Gaga – The Cure

Anastacia, Texas and Lady Gaga are all top 10 favourite artists and yet they failed to make top 10 this year. Proving how strong the competition was. Kelela is bringing some true R&B master class in this and actor Dan Stevens managed to sneak into the list due to his astounishing contribution to the Beauty and the Beast OST.

#21 Shania Twain – Life’s About To Get Good
#22 Katy Perry – Bon Appètit
    #23 Loreen – Statements
#24 Harry Styles – Sign Of The Times
#25 James McAlister, Sufjan Stevens & others – Saturn
#26 Fall Out Boy – Young And Menace
    #27 Kehlani – Touch
    #28 Niall Horan – Flicker
#29 Nelly Furtado – Sticks and Stones
#30 Michael Jackson – Blood On The Dancefloor

The fucking king of pop is here with a mash-up that rocks my world. I feel so blessed this year.

    NON-2017 SONGS, BIG IN 2017 – TOP 10

#1 Miranda Lambert – Runnin’ Just In Case
    #2 Cam – Village
    #3 Taylor Swift – Enchanted
#4 Maren Morris – I Could Use A Love Song
#5 Mary Chapin Carpenter – This Shirt
#6 Ariana Grande – Thinking About You
#7 Ayumi Hamasaki – Love Song
#8 Taylor Swift – Back To December
#9 Lady Gaga – John Wayne
    #10 Steven Grand – Time

7 country songs. The whole top 5 is country. A massive revival of this genre spurred last year by Miranda Lambert’s The Weight of These Wings and a brilliant rate from @MollieSwift21 bringing me in contact with Cam. Village was a very healing song when I lost 2 relatives and a dear friend her father in the space of 4 weeks. Also Taylor Swift made an entrance in my life. State of Grace also came close to enter this list. Shoutout to @ComeOnGloria for bringing ‘This Shirt’ into my life and @One Stop Candy Shop for bringing Ayumi Hamasaki.

    ALBUMS

    OVERALL ALBUM TOP 20
#1 Kelly Clarkson – Meaning of Life
#2 Amy MacDonald – Under Stars
    #3 Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.
#4 Lana Del Rey – Lust For Life
#5 Kelela – Take Me Apart
#6 London Grammar – Truth Is A Beautiful
    #7 Lorde – Melodrama
#8 Stereophonics – Scream Above The Sound
    #9 Anastacia – Evolution
#10 Texas – Jump On Board
    #11 Goldfrapp – Silver Eye
#12 Beth Ditto – Fake Sugar
    #13 Michael Jackson – Scream
    #14 Niia – I
    #15 Kehlani – SweetSexySavage
#16 Jessie James Decker – Southern Girl City Lights
#17 Fifth Harmony – Fifth Harmony
    #18 SZA – Ctrl
#19 Linkin Park – One More Light
    #20 Loreen – RIDE

So many ultimate fave artists have released an album this year: Kelly Clarkson, Anastacia, Amy MacDonald, Lana Del Rey, Stereophonics, Texas, Michael Jackson and Foo Fighters. Only the latter did not manage a slot in the top 20 (also U2 did not get a slot, but that is for a whole different reason). For the majority of the year I thought Amy MacDonald or Kendrick Lamar could take this home, but Kelly Clarkson literally did that. Definitely new queens are Kelela, Kehlani, Niia and SZA bringing some true urban realness in this list. In the end this list managed to be very eclectic, showing this year was strong in more than one way.

    POPROCK/ROCK/COUNTRY – ALBUM TOP 15
#1 Amy MacDonald – Under Stars
#2 Stereophonics – Scream Above The Sound
    #3 Anastacia – Evolution
#4 Beth Ditto – Fake Sugar
#5 Jessie James Decker – Southern Girl City Lights
#6 Linkin Park – One More Light
#7 Foo Fighters – Concrete and Gold
    #8 Niall Horan – Flicker
#9 Michelle Branch – Hopeless Romantic
    #10 Shania Twain – Now
    #11 P!nk – Beautiful Trauma
#12 The Cranberries – Something Else
    #13 KeSha – Rainbow
#14 Harry Styles – Harry Styles
    #15 RaeLynn – WildHorse

My prime musical preference is literally lead by one of the strongest efforts in poprock genre since Anastacia brought Resurrection. Jessie James Decker makes sure country is represented in the top 5. I am starting to stan this queen more and more. Stereophonics rarely have the top album for me, but they manage with basically all their albums to get into the higher regions.

    POP/ELECTRONIC/INDIE – ALBUM TOP 15
#1 Lana Del Rey – Lust For Life
#2 London Grammar – Truth is a Beautiful Thing
    #3 Lorde – Melodrama
#4 Texas – Jump On Board
    #5 Goldfrapp – Silver Eye
    #6 Loreen – RIDE
    #7 The XX – I See You
#8 Nelly Furtado – The Ride
#9 James McAlister, Sufjan Stevens (& others) – Planetarium
#10 Steps – Tears On The Dancefloor
#11 Arcade Fire – Everything Now
    #12 RONDÉ – RONDÉ
    #13 Paramore – After Laughter
    #14 Katy Perry – Witness
    #15 Jennifer Paige – Starflower

That top 3 is solid. I mean WTF! All Killer, No Filler! Sufjan is back in a year list from me, which is always lovely and the first album of the year, released by The XX, managed to stand firm in all the strong releases that followed. Despite not sweeping me, I am glad to have Arcade Fire back as I kind of lost them. Also Loreen doing literally THAT so late in the year, what could it mean. Can she surpass Goldfrapp or even get into the top 3? Time will tell, but that effort is getting stronger with every listen, so it isnot impossible.

    URBAN/HIPHOP/SOUL/R&B – ALBUM TOP 15
#1 Kelly Clarkson – Meaning of Life
    #2 Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.
#3 Kelela – Take Me Apart
    #4 Michael Jackson – Scream
    #5 Niia – I
    #6 Kehlani - SweetSexySavage
#7 Fifth Harmony – Fifth Harmony
    #8 SZA – Ctrl
    #9 Jay-Z – 4:44
    #10 Kacy Hill – Like A Woman
    #11 Big K.R.I.T. – 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time
#12 Calvin Harris – Fuck Wav Bounce
    #13 DJ Khaled – Grateful
    #14 Keyshia Cole – 11:11 reset
    #15 Fergie – Double Dutchess

WHEW! After so many years of low rotation in urban music and completely hanging on by a few stellar exceptions 2017 literally brought R&B and soul back. Add some of the best hiphop in 10 years? This year was a true explosion of the genre and I am glad it washed all over me. I am stanning so many new acts suddenly and I am ready to follow them all. But it is also nice to see some of the more veterans can still move me. A side note, I honestly did not know what to do with Kelly Clarkson. It feels so weird to put this woman in this section, but technically it does fit best here. So poor Kendrick losing out to a #1 spot, due to this beast of an album.

    OTHER

    EP – TOP 10
    #1 Aly & AJ – Ten Years
    #2 Loreen – Nude
#3 Jessie James Decker – Gold
    #4 Tiffany Gouché – Dive
#5 Mick Jagger – Gotta Get A Grip / England Lost
#6 Caro Emerald – Emerald Island
    #7 Avicii – AVICI (01)
#8 Bebe Rexha – All Your Fault, Pt. 1
    #9 U2 – Joshua Tree Remix EP
#10 Bebe Rexha – All Your Fault, Pt. 2

A rather strong year for small EP’s. Quite the eclectic list too above. It was a top 5 at first, but there was simply too much goodness missing.

    PERFORMANCES – TOP 5
#1 Ariana Grande – Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Live @ One Love Manchester)
#2 Lady Gaga – Medley (Live @ Superbowl)
#3 Amy MacDonald – Under Stars (Live @ Under Stars Tour)
#4 U2 – Mothers of the Disappeared (Live @ Joshua Tree Tour)
#5 Rolling Stones – Paint It Black (Live @ No Filter Tour)
    #6 The Time & Bruno Mars - Prince Tribute (Live @ Grammy's)
#7 Kelela - Better (Live @ Take Me Apart Tour)
#8 Anastacia - Everything Burns (Live @ The Ultimate Collection Tour)
#9 Solange - Cranes In The Sky (Live @ North Sea Jazz Festival)
#10 Katy Perry - Roar (Live @ One Love Manchester)

One Love Manchester was beautiful. Some stellar performances too as also Katy Perry’s Roar was on point. One of the most other powerful performances has to be the one from U2. The song is an ode to mothers from whom children were kidnapped. Seeing mothers holding a candle and that one to fade out to symbolise the loss of faith is… shivering. Lady Gaga made a rapid surge in plays after the superbowl. This woman literally took it home. The best superbowl performance ever!

    MUSIC VIDEO – TOP 5
    #1 Hurts – Beautiful Ones
#2 Lady Gaga – John Wayne
#3 Katy Perry – Bon Appètit
    #4 Kendrick Lamar – Humble
#5 Lana Del Rey – Love

Though personal appreciation for music video is dwindling year after year, mostly because videos are not that strong anymore. But these 5 are all jewels in their own way. Reverse the order and it also makes sense. I had to go for Hurts as it hits home so personally for me.

    DISAPPOINTMENTS – TOP 10
    #1 U2 – Songs of Experience
#2 Various Artists – The Get Down Part 2 OST
#3 Beauty and the Beast – OST 2017
    #4 Mary J. Blige – Strength of a Woman
#5 The Killers – Wonderful Wonderful
    #6 Rag’n’Bone Man – Human
    #7 Lea Michele – Places
    #8 Elbow – Little Fictions
    #9 Blondie – Pollinator
    #10 Coldplay – Kaleidoscope

U2 is the disappointment you knew was coming and it managed to be even worse than that. It was good to have Kendrick Lamar involved, but this was not worth saving anymore. I am loving their old stuff, but I can basically one strong album from everything they released this side of the millennium. What a disaster. Mary J. Blige doesnot have an opus for me and I thought during this strong R&B/soul year she could finally join the pack and sIay the competition. But sadly no. Despite Dan Stevens is in my overall singles top 30 from 2017, the Beauty and the Beast OST is a no-go for me. Also The Get Down OST is a big miss after that first instalment last year. It did gave me Toy-Box though.

Album Cover of the Year: Feist - Pleasure

    Disappointments:
    1. Charli XCX- POP2 (sorry)
    2. Wolf Alice - Visions of a Life
    3. Alvvays - Antisocialites
    4. Goldfrapp - Silver Eye (still nice)
    5. Fergie- Double Dutchess (not that I had high hopes)

Live Performance of the Year: Camila - "Havana" at the EMAs

  9. How does everyone here rank their song lists? Because I have no clue, I’ve narrowed it down to 50 songs but I have literally no idea how to decide which are best and worst. Albums at least have distinct peaks and troughs that move them up or down.

  10. I didn't realize your year was so K-Pop, @Sanctuary !

Edit - Ddd for anyone confused, I had this thread opened and the k-pop subforum's Best Of 2017 thread and posted in this one by accident and the good sis @man.tis.shrimp clocked me even when I deleted it in like 30 seconds, so I threw a bit of banter back. Steps and k-pop are both wonderful.

  15. As Ramona would say:

And this moment on the title track as well:

"Say you wish you could find some way to help,
Not to be so hard on myself.
So why is it easy for everyone else?
    I'm not always like this,
    There's always tomorrow I guess,

And I'd never do it but it's not a joke,
I can't tell the difference when I'm all alone,
Is it real or a dream, which is worse?
    Can you help me?
I just wanted to go to sleep.

When I turn out the lights,
    There's no one left,
    Between myself and me.
