PJOPS Retrochart w/e 24/01/81

  1. THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

    [IMG] The Rules

    - This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

    - This week is week ending 24 January 1981 and can include songs released up to 17 January 1981 only.

    - Your deadline is MIDNIGHT THURSDAY 19 JANUARY.

    - You can now chart ANY SONG RELEASED IN 1980.

    - Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

    - Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

    - The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

    - You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

    - Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

    - Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

    - The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

    - It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

  9. What, a Russronian retrochart without Lio's Banana Split? That's never happened before!
That's progress, as the old must make way for the new - and the new is best represented here by Italy's Alice, whose continental smash hit 'Per Elisa' was released January 16th:

Bowie, naturally, gets a record third single in the top 20, but the most surprising new entry must be Fire Engines, whose 'Get Up And Use Me' was decades later covered by Franz Ferdinand (if that sort of thing helps y'all to give it a listen):

The Damned are still going strong, as evidenced by 'Hit Or Miss' from their new Black Album:

01 captain beefheart & the magic band - dirty blue gene
    02 talking heads - crosseyed & painless
    03 deutsch-amerikanische-freundschaft - coco pino

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's no change at the top, with Antmusic crushing all challengers for yet another week, but as no fewer than TEN entries gatecrash the Top 40 (a full 25% of the chart is therefore made up of newcomers) and over half of last week's Top 10 plummet down the listings, the New Year Blues have definitely been blown away. 1981 starts here, folks.

Having topped the EG charts in 1980 as frontman of Genesis, a solo Phillip Collins Esq. now looks odds-on to emulate that feat with his debut single. Stevie Wonder moves strongly to #3, but looks to have been pipped to the post for the second release running. Streisand/Gibb and yet another Blondie classic may have something to say about the identity of next week's #1, but both could just be a little too far back for the moment.

Rapture is the highest arrival, ahead of Ultravox (featuring Midge Ure - also of Visage - on vocals) and the fourth John Lennon hit in the past couple of months, this time a proper follow-up single from his final album Double Fantasy rather than a re-released classic. Ex-Traffic and Spencer Davis Group vocalist Steve Winwood is doing great business in America with his second solo set Arc Of A Diver and its lead single - While You See A Chance - which climbs inside the EG Top 40 to #22. Frequent hitmakers during 1980, Madness and Cliff Richard both return with their first offerings of 1981.

  11. I got a feeling that everyone's Retrochart this week is going to be exciting....before I reveal the HMV Retrochart, here's some makers and shakers - are they in yours?:

Number 49 - new entry for a band who now have three singles in the HMV Retrochart - we welcome Adam and the Ants with "Car trouble" another of his old singles being re-released:

  12. Number 48 - new entry for Spandau Ballet and "The Freeze" - "The art is pretending it's art" indeed!

In a week containing a number of high climbers, Ultravox have the biggest ever with their single "Vienna" up from 50 to number 7 - this beautiful video has just been completed as the song shoots into the top ten:

The Highest new entry this week is at number one - the new single from John Lennon "Woman":

    Chartfile:
A very exciting chart this week – a new number one for John Lennon who comes smashing in with “Woman” – making it three number ones in a row now. “Imagine” was number one for three weeks and this week falls to number three as his previous number one “(Just like) Startin’ over” falls out of the top ten to number 16. His fourth Retrochart single is at number 39 – “Happy Christmas (war is over)”
Adam and the Ants are stuck in a John Lennon sandwich at number two with “Antmusic” and their second top ten single “Young Parisians” is stuck at number six. They have a third single with “Car Trouble” entering at number 49 this week
1981 is now underway, with some very big climbers into the top ten. Ultravox have the biggest climb in HMV Retrochart history as they go from 50 to 7 with “Vienna” and Phil Collins also has a massive jump from 45 to 8 with “In the air tonight”
Blondie have a big new entry at number 10 with “Rapture” – could they make it four number ones in a row? The Look climb into the top ten with “I am the beat”, whereas The Beat are stuck at number four with “Too nice to talk to” meanwhile The Specials head down to number five with “Do nothing”
There are some big climbers outside the top ten this week with Dire Straits and Heatwave who both leap more than 20 places into the top 20
The longest joint runners on the HMV Retrochart both with 12 weeks are Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration” and John Lennon’s “(Just like) Startin’ over”
Next week could see new entries from Rainbow, The Passions, The Boomtown Rats, The Teardrop Explodes, Coast to Coast, Generation X and more old Adam and the Ants singles – stay tuned!
