The Saturdays - General Discussion

Discussion in 'Comeback corner' started by poploz, Mar 19, 2008.

  1. What does everyone think to the article on the front page?

Will be nice to see Frankie Sandford make a return.

    I am a fan already.
I just know they will appeal to me... Girlband, former S Club members, dedicated team, great songwriters, Polydor, Girls Aloud tour... all good!

Me too, I'm surprised Rochelle is there, I thought she was a model/TV presenter these days?

  4. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

I'm not sure. I hate the idea that we're just waiting for Girls Aloud to split and then just jump on The Saturdays bandwagon for the sake of it. I'm predisposed to hate them, actually, especially with the S Club connection. But I'm interested to hear what they sound like before I make my mind up. I might love them obsessively!

Girl Thing were meant to be the next Spice Girls, and look how that one turned out. I'm glad that there is another proper girlband coming out, though. I just hope they're good.

Did anyone else spot Cheryl, Nicola and Heidi in that pink silhouette?

I think the thing with Girl Thing was that they were supposed to be the same as the Spice Girls, though, which doesn't really apply here even though the new band are obviously aimed at filling the same sort of hole.

The one bent down looks like she's about to lay a serious shit on the others shoes.

Other than that, I'm quite interested in hearing their stuff!

I'm going to be completely controversial and wait until I actually hear their music before I make a judgement.

  9. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

The big shock for me was that I didn't like Girl Thing and you all know how barmy I am for Betty Boo. I think it was her music being performed by people I didn't engage with at all. I vaguely remember the one with the pink hair nearly breaking down on Live & Kicking at one point because the group wasn't living up to the hype. I think that's when I came to terms with the concept of 'being dropped' meaning 'being sacked'. I honestly used to think popstars went to live in a popstar cottage when they stopped being popstars.

I wonder if The Saturdays will go the same was as Frank. If Girls Aloud do split soon (and that's perhaps why The Saturdays were created) they might look as though they're jumping in the Aloud grave in a similar way that ended up punishing The Faders when Busted split.

I still really want to hear them though. I'd be interested in any new Xenomania project. Let me say that I am not making any sort of judgement at all and will make my mind up after I play their song!

That's good to know. It's hard to imagine an original girl group when it seems we've had every possible style and combination. It is also hard to imagine one that is not destined to flop. We've seen it too many times. But it sounds like they're in good hands.

  11. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

This isn't a Xenomania project though.

The main songwriter is a Norwegien who's not yet been involved in writing for many acts so far. That'll all change this year though - the American record labels are on board.

I've heard the first single 'If It's Not Love' and it's wonderful. Nothing like Girls Aloud at all. The sample is recognisable but it'll be difficult to place exactly where it's from - the original only made number 14.

  12. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

Can you tell us what the sample is from?

  13. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

I'd rather not really in case the idea is nicked!

  14. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

I'm sorry. If you assume, you make an ass of u and me!

  15. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

When did a girlband last break through? I don't think anybody wants a new girlband. I think Sugababes and Girls Alouds have the market sewn up right now. I will probably like them, but just because PJ proclaims them as the second coming, it doesn't mean they're any cop. In fact, that news piece probably just buried them.

It's funny that they try and launch these types of acts on support tours... they're usually rubbish 'live'. I think for indie bands and serious musicians, touring and gigging comes before the big deal and success... with pop acts, it goes the other way. You have to sell a load of records before anyone wants to see you dance about to backing tapes. I'm not gonna worry too much, I don't think The Saturdays will get an album out. That said, it's all about the song...

  16. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

It sounds like PJ is saying The Saturdays are filling the gap that Girls Aloud are leaving behind. So maybe there will be a place for them.

  17. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

To answer that question seriously, I can't remember. Honestly. Is there some sort of consumer resistance? For that matter when did a proper boyband (you know the sort of boyband I mean) actually do well?

Girls Aloud fans are more liable to turn on The Saturdays for that very reason.

I wonder if The Saturdays have a Freak Like Me up their sleeves?

  18. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

ive heard the song and yes its good. there is nothing like it t the minute but that might work against them as pop isnt really forefront.
    Hopefully this will change it!

Or a Sound Of The Underground. If they have something like this that almost steers pop in a new direction, that's a good start to being successful.

I thought Hope were meant to be the new Girls Aloud. Has Simon Cowell given up on that one?

  20. Re: The Saturdays - General Discussion Thread

I hope so, they were rubbish. 'Hanky Panky'... eeeek.
