I'm not emotionally prepared to once again wake early, queue without coffee, encounter the disdain of shop clerks, only to later shame-bid on eBay after a few drinks and watch it show up damaged despite the £27 postage. Never again. Please just release records normally.

Icehouse The Singles Rate 1981-2021 OPEN NOW

Looking at these chart positions made me wonder anew why they didn't have more success in the U.K. I've always thought it was because they didn't have a real 'image' or were stylistically somewhat behind the curve but I suspect the answer is more complex?

Icehouse The Singles Rate 1981-2021 OPEN NOW

Hard to believe Chrysalis persisted after Don't Believe Anymore and Taking The Town failed to chart in the U.K., but this was a different time!

Icehouse The Singles Rate 1981-2021 OPEN NOW

I'm unfamiliar with most of their output after '89 (things started to fall apart after Bob Kretschmer left) but would love to join the rate. I think casual fans are surprised to learn of all the people Iva Davies has worked with over the years; Brian Eno, Steve Jansen, Guy Pratt, and the list...

Pet Shop Boys - "Dancing star" + Nonetheless (Apr 26)

    It's a song that, once again, seems to be dividing fans. There's a beautifully written opinion by 'Drioco' on the PSB Community that might interest some;

Is it possible to truly like the music… but despise the artist?

Yes, although for me it's not always black and white. The sad reality is we're surrounded by homophobes and transphobes and we often don't know where an artist really stands. I would find it hard to enjoy anyone's music if views I find problematic are in some way woven into their art, through...

She's a Cameo Queen. A friend got me one from her, also, and she was sitting by the pool looking gorgeous and talked to me like I was a long lost friend. It was lovely.

Pet Shop Boys - "Dancing star" + Nonetheless (Apr 26)

They still give a wonderful interview and how thrilling that they seem so much more present now than during most of the past decade. I choose to think it's a sly reference to the work of the late Felix Gonzalez-Torres, but that might be a stretch.

A-Ha UK Singles Rate 1984 - 2022 Winner Revealed, It Was Always The TV!

The Sun Always Shines on TV is truly a worthy winner. Apparently Alan Tarney wasn't a big fan of the song at first, and you wonder what he was hearing. It's epic! My favorite quote about the song is from Paul; "When we recorded it, we were really sick with influenza. Magne and Morten were lying...

I was just wondering the same thing. It's gone a bit quiet in advance of the tour, but they did announce that "exclusive tour merchandise" would be coming early in the new year. I wonder if this could include a new physical single release? I'd hate to think they've had a change of heart.

A-Ha UK Singles Rate 1984 - 2022 Winner Revealed, It Was Always The TV!

For sure. It's strange to me that there are a lot of people who only know a-ha from Take On Me. I appreciate that the band accept this fact and always play it live. The stripped down version on the MTV Unplugged Summer Solstice album is like a completely different song but somehow still a classic.

A-Ha UK Singles Rate 1984 - 2022 Winner Revealed, It Was Always The TV!

Manhattan Skyline feels like a novel in four minutes of music. Morton really conveys the sadness and anger in the lyrics. Listening to it again for this rate, I thought it was almost too much. Still, a classic and worthy of the top 5! I'm a little shook that Summer Moved On is in the top 5. I...

A-Ha UK Singles Rate 1984 - 2022 Winner Revealed, It Was Always The TV!

I agree. Bond theme songs are odd ("Sigmund Freud: analyse this"). You have to adhere to the formula and yet also somehow stay true to your own style. Your song can be vetoed or sent back for revisions by the producing team. The relative success of any theme song is also somewhat dependent on...

A-Ha UK Singles Rate 1984 - 2022 Winner Revealed, It Was Always The TV!

Rapid fire thoughts, because the rate is chugging along! Train of Thought, the Existentialist bop with Fairlight pan flute AND a tempo change in the bridge? My mind was blown. The real winner of The Living Daylights is John Barry, who apparently did absolutely nothing but contractually got a...
