Same, I finished it last night. I enjoyed the rest of the book and felt like a good job was done of building tension. I had this impending sense of doom and then it ended and I was like…..?

Dua Lipa - "Illusion" + Radical Optimism (May 3)

I think along the lines of ‘moral compass’ - as in, is it in your nature play fair?

Dua Lipa - "Illusion" + Radical Optimism (May 3)

Loving both tracks so far, as others have said - Miss Dua just gets it. I can’t wait for the album and to see what else she has in store for us. And I don’t mind the video, it’s not great but I kinda like it. Perhaps it’s just because I like the song so much.

Ooh that’s been sitting on my bookshelf for decades! Let me know how you find it - I really should get round to it. Is it a popular read here?

I loved Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse - I thought it was magnificent, unlike anything I’d read before. It felt like such a rebellious read - knowing that her position on women having their own lives, dreams and careers outside of the marital home would have been pretty radical for the time...

My boyfriend just finished it and really struggled - so he wants me to read it so we can discuss it. Her sentences are very long and punctuated but so far I’m enjoying it. Do you have any tips for getting more out of her style?

I’ve finished the first book of the year (having scraped 35 last year by the skin of my teeth!) - Tender is the Night by F Scott Fitzgerald. He writes so beautifully, in my mind he’s practically unparalleled, but I never really like his characters and the plot is a bit meh. It’s hard to feel...

Mr Bates Vs. The Post Office

There’s a great podcast about it from a few years ago that goes into the scandal. It’s got interviews with many of the postmasters involved in bringing this to national attention. It’s called The Great Post Office Trial.

    Oscar Bait 2023-2024

I loved Maestro - I found it really moving, the use of music was great and I think for a non-conductor, he did a decent job at channelling Lenny with only a few years training. Carey Mulligan was sensational, and I think Cooper did a great job bringing it all together. It felt honest, without...

Sobriety and recovery and making life manageable

I was a wake and baker for 10 years if not more - I’ve quit for almost 18 months now. Some tips - Reddit has a community (leaves) which is helpful but through it you can find the leaves discord which has twice daily chats which are super supportive and got me through the first weeks, if not...

I also have never got into drinking coffee - I used to consume loads of tea though. But I moved to Europe and it never tasted the same, even if I brought bags with me so I only drink it when back in the UK. So many of my friends can’t function without their morning coffee but I’ve never...

Sobriety and recovery and making life manageable

I’ve struggled hugely with weed consumption in the past. I spent more than a decade getting high from morning til night - and it got to the point when I was getting high before rehearsals and concerts which I’d promised myself I’d never do. I’d used it to calm down and switch off but over time...

BEYONCÉ - RENAISSANCE World Tour 2023

I saw her in Köln and thought similarly - the sound quality wasn’t great. It was hard to hear what she was saying when she spoke, the mix drowned her out at times and bordered the whole thing indecipherable at times.

Currently on a reread of Robin Hobb’s books. I’ve finished the first trilogy, and just started the Liveship Traders one. It’s been a long time since I’ve read them so I’ve forgotten a lot of details, and find myself devouring them wanting to know what happens (the joys of not having an amazing...

I really enjoyed Circe, and the Song of Achilles too. The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker is also great if you want another retelling of the Trojan War.

I’ve read the Poppy Wats trilogy by Kuang but not Babel or Yellowface. I’ll add those to my reading list for the summer. At the moment I’m rereading Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy which I remember adoring as a teenager. I’ve read a lot of non-fiction recently which I’ve enjoyed but over time it’s...

What is that person’s ranking though? 3, 2, 1, 4, 5 and then 6? I agree with the first two being high up but as much as I love the 3rd - how is that no 1 in their ranking with 6 last? I agree on the opening though!
