✦ 00s Indie Pop ✦ & ✖ 00s Indie Rock ✖ Rates | ✖ Indie Rock Rate Finale! ✖

Welp there goes my only shot at not coming last. Unless everyone's commentary was used the same number of times isn't this a bit unfair

There isn't a totally fair way to approach it, because if I just ignore the "self-guesses", that means the people who actually did provide commentary that got used in the game are at a disadvantage instead, because they have less songs they can correctly guess than the people who didn't provide commentary. But counting those guesses the same as regular ones wouldn't really be fair either, which is why I think using them as a tiebreaker makes the most sense. But the proper guesses are what's most important, so like if someone guesses five songs right they'll still be ahead of someone who guessed four songs plus two of their own right.

My dumb-assess is really being exposed like that

Don't worry, as I mentioned, most people also "guessed" their own entries, it wasn't just you ddd. If I hadn't missed @Maki's commentary for Au Revoir Simone, yours wouldn't even have been the first.

And here we are, the song with the second most 11s in the indie pop rate (and tied for third most 11s across both rates) gets eliminated at #20... And if it wasn't for @klow's 2 it would have been #15 instead... Anyway...

Angus & Julia Stone are a brother/sister duo from Australia who have released five studio albums between 2007 and this year, with their most recent album, Life Is Strange, which came out two months ago, being the soundtrack to game Life Is Strange: True Colours, which is funny given that series has been mentioned in the rate before (note to self: I need to get around to playing that game). Big Jet Plane was the lead single from their second and biggest album Down This Way, released in 2010, and it was originally a solo Angus Stone song, from his solo debut Smoking Gun (2009), released under the alias Lady of the Sunshine. Given the duet version only came out in early 2010, Big Jet Plane (at least the version we're rating) is the most recent song in the rate. The song was quite a big hit in Australia in a handful of other countries, was used in a few shows and even received an EDM cover in 2017, courtesy of Brazilian DJ Alok, which I'm not even going to bother posting. I first discovered Angus & Julia Stone because they were part of a festival I went to, sandwiched between Friendly Fires and Fleet Foxes (iconic line-up), and it was pretty much love at first listen, and I've been a stan ever since. I'm a big fan of acts with both male and female vocals (see also The xx and Husky Rescue, two of my other biggest favourites in the rate), and I love how Angus and Julia's voices compliment each other. While they have lost of excellent material (my favourite album track from Down This Way and the lead single from their self-titled third album from 2014 are both embedded below), Big Jet Plane is the song, an absolute, unquestionable classic, and it's sad certain tasteless low scorers couldn't appreciate it.

@DJHazey (4) “I really don’t like this guy’s voice at all. There’s an element of ‘nasally’ he’s doing with it that annoys me. The “big jet plane” parts are clunky instead of catchy too. This is a miss for me.”

@Attis (4) “Boring”

@DominoDancing (7) “That affected whispy vocal performance drives me insane after a while.”

@Maki (8) “This one grew on me and I expect to grow further. I really like the slight build-up and the melody at some parts. Still not entirely sure how to feel about the guy's voice, though.”

@daninternational (9) “she's a classic”

@Filippa (10) “I‘m here for this mixture of sun-kissed hope and soft sadness. ”

@berserkboi (11) “One of the most gorgeous songs EVER! Take the 11 you will probably need for having male emotional vocals <3”

@elektroxx (11) “I don't think that I can put into words how much I stan Angus & Julia Stone. "Big Jet Plane" is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.”

Commentary Guessing Game
Big Jet Plane

@Untouchable Ace:
7. “I mean this is fine and is by far not the worst song here, it's just not that much more interesting than anything else on a mid-00s Starbucks compilation.”

Interesting guess, given @untouchable gave it a 10 dd

@Phonetics Girl 2
@Maki 1 (+1)
@slaybellz 1
@klow 1
@Untouchable Ace 1
@MilesAngel 1
@Attis 0 (+1)
@daninternational 0
Some of my guesses are from the perspective of myself and some are channelling the general disgruntled voter. @klow this time?

I gave Big Jet Plane 6.25, which was my lowest score left. It's nice enough but repetitive and I'm not a huge fan of whispered vocals either. I was going to guess it for the “Potentially the limpest song ever recorded. Music for people who have no interest in music” comment dd, but went for something else in the end.

I knew it!!!! Though I was expecting the third 11 to be our host’s! Welcome to Team Taste with us @Aester !!!

Consider the Videoclub section of the French Rate dedicated to you!

It was definitely a strong contender, but a different song got my 11 in the end!

Anyway, I ended up only being able to post this last elimination much later than usual, and since I like leaving a bit of time between eliminations (which is why I've been posting one in the afternoon and the other one in the evening), I think I'll prepare the next one before going to sleep and post it tomorrow morning, and then tomorrow's eliminations should be up around the usual times.

Surprised to get a like from @berserkboi for this post after I maligned their 11.

Sorry to have quashed three (!) people's 11s, but I find this really plodding and monotonous, and the general sound design / aesthetic is not for me either. It's all a bit flavourless, and that says a lot because I LOVE eating both bananas and avocadoes (in fact I've got both in the smoothie I'm sipping on right now). There was definitely a lot of long-built up resentment in that 2 as well - this song has essentially become a mainstay on commercial radio here since it hit #1 on the Hottest 100 and I've always found it to be a bit of a buzzkill in that context. (Also this is likely very unfair but Angus and Julia give me slight Byron Bay anti-vaxxer vibes).

Anyway, once again, sawry. But believe it or not I've got an even lower score of mine still left in, so my villainy is set to continue!

The fact Angus & Julia Stone released a new album 3 days before this rate started, and apparently no-one on PJ even noticed... Granted it wasn't exactly a typical studio album with a proper campaign and whatnot, but still.
I literally posted about it in their thread!!

I guess that we're fighting, @klow. Although it shouldn't have been a surprise since you called for their heads earlier in this rate.

I never would've expected "Big Jet Plane" to leave so soon. I genuinely thought that it was universally loved, but boy, was I wrong.
Thank you for your demonstration of taste. XOXO.

While on the topic of Angus & Julia Stone, I thought that I'd share these because why not?

Oops. I'll definitely give it a listen soon. But I think I want to play the game first as I imagine it probably works better in that context? Anyway, I wonder if this counts as a typical studio album for them and that's what they've been doing these last few months/years, or if they've been working on a regular studio album as well.
