Right outside the indie pop top 15 we have a song I really thought was a shoo-in for the top 5 at least. Getting a 3.5 early in the voting period really hurt its average, and that plus a 4 and three 5s unfortunately prevented it from doing better.
Regina Spektor is a Russian-American singer-songwriter who has released seven albums between 2001 and 2016. Her first two albums, Songs and 11:11, were small scale self-releases, but her third album Soviet Kitsch (2004) made some waves, and her big breakthrough came with Begin To Hope (2006), one of the best-selling albums in the rate, whose success was in big part due to Fidelity, its lead single. Fidelity is an absolute classic and was actually the very first song I added to the indie pop playlist (I was even going to name the indie pop rate after one of its lyrics, but there's only so much space in a thread title), I really thought it was going to do a lot better, but maybe overexposure hurt its chances? It is probably the most well-known song in the indie pop rate after Young Folks, so... maybe it was just wasn't indie enough. And judging by the commentary, I guess Regina's vocals might not be everyone's cup of tea either, oh well. Below are embedded Regina's second and third biggest songs - Us, from Soviet Kitsch and Samson from Begin To Hope (a re-recording of a song originally from her self-released sophomore Songs).
DJHazey (3.5) “I think I read somewhere that Regina has a knack for doing stuff like the “ha-ha-ha-ha” thing on the chorus. From afar I probably read that and thought “oh that’ll be fun”. Nope. More like nails on a chalkboard.”
@DominoDancing (5) “Not a fan of turning a breathing exercise into a chorus.”
@BubblegumBoy (8) “Quirky pop girls 00s edition incoming...” Loving that concept.
@daninternational (8.5) “Not my fave of hers (see Samson) but fits this rate perfectly, and it is probably one of her most well known. Love her voice”
@berserkboi (9) “Extremely quirky, but so strong it doesn’t take away from the overall beauty!”
@Sprockrooster (9) “OOPS! I completely forgot to advocate to get Samson included instead and it would have snatched my 11 for sure. Samson is such a well-written track that knows how to move me well. Fidelity is also amazing on a superb album!”
@An Insider (10) “Gorgeous song, probably the song that aged the best in this list”
