And so Dance with Somebody is the last song to miss the indie rock top 15. After two huge names (New Order and Arctic Monkeys), we now say goodbye to probably the smallest indie rock band left (in English-speaking countries at least, as they're pretty massive in parts of continental Europe).

Mando Diao are a band from Sweden who have released ten albums between 2002 and 2020. They are, along with CSS, one of the only bands in the indie rock rate to also perform in a language other than English, in this case with part of discography being in Swedish. Dance With Somebody was the lead single from their fifth, and biggest, album Give Me Fire!, released in 2009. Although it didn't do anything in the UK/US, Dance With Somebody was a massive hit in Europe, hitting the top 5 in six different countries. It was also, more recently, a moderate hit in PJ00s, thanks to yours truly submitting it. Below are also Gloria, taken from Give Me Fire! as well, and Down in the Past, from their second album Hurricane Bar (2004). Also, the superior album version of the song with a long instrumental intro is really worth listening to for anyone who only knows the shorter single version that was included in the rate.

@berserkboi (8) “Love this tune!”

@DominoDancing (9) “Now this is something to properly party to at the Indie disco.”

@DJHazey (10) “I didn't even remember it from the recent song contest, but giving it many plays for this helped me see the light. Another chorus that eventually got stuck in my head quite a lot. This does what other 'dance-centric' choruses tried to do, but does it on another level entirely.” Shame you couldn't see that in time to give it points in PJ00s dd

@daninternational (10) “I moved from the UK (where this wasn't a hit) to Berlin (where this was) in 2009, and this song was everywhere. Still love it, and when I finally open my island gay bar DWS (Dan's With Somebody) this will be the theme tune ”

@Filippa (10) “A wonderful feel-good song with 80s flair that has „dancefloor” written all over it.”

So... this one was really obvious. The stupid thing is I didn't even clock the "Dan's With Somebody"/"Dance With Somebody" pun when picking the commentary for the game ff. It was easy enough even without that though, just going by the song having been a hit in Germany and not in the UK.

I love Arctic Monkeys (as in they are one of my favourite bands ever), though "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" never did much to me. Yes, it's a fun little romp, but the melody nor the riff are anything special.

Love the picks of "When the Sun Goes Down" (my favourite track from their debut) and "Knee Socks", @soratami!
Here are other of my faves:

My absolute favourite song by them, however, is a fantastic B-side "Catapult":

"AM" is an amazing album and "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" is such a grower - it possibly became my favourite album by them. Really need to re-listen to their earlier stuff (including the two albums as part of
The Last Shadow Puppets, which are great, too).

There were actually many other Arcade Fire songs I wanted to push on @soratami, but Rebellion and Wake Up felt like the only anthemic tracks released in the 2000s. Anyways, stream Windowsill, My Body Is A Cage, and the absolute best Arcade fire song that @soratami had the gall to forget, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) - also my #1 song of the 2010s is last year's countdown.

The song without MV if the MV is blocked for you.

Well... sorry @slaybellz dd. Having received three more points than Pull Shapes/Such Great Heights, Silver Lining is the first indie pop song with an 8+ average. And, from this elimination onward, every indie pop song has received at least one 11, so better pray for your faves (if they haven't been eliminated yet, mine went back at #14 so I can't relate).

Rilo Kiley were a band from Los Angeles who released four albums between 2001 and 2007, and eventually broke up in 2013, with lead singer Jenny Lewis now focusing on her solo career (in fact she released a new song literally two days ago) and other projects such as Nice As Fuck, as mentioned in the Au Revoir Simone elimination. Their first two albums didn't exactly make a lot of waves, but the band received a big profile boost thanks to the success of Postal Service, which Jenny was part of, and with Rilo Kiley joining them on tour (it's interesting how so many of these acts are connected). Silver Lining, which samples 1970 UK/US #1 hit My Sweet Lord by ex-Beatle George Harrison (which kept me from entering it in PJ00s fff), was one of the singles from Rilo Kiley's fourth and most successful album, Under The Blacklight. Embedded below are two of their other biggest songs, Portion for Foxes from third album More Adventurous (2004) and Breakin' Up, also from Under The Blacklight.

@daninternational (6) “It's more of a mood than a song” I really don't see how this commentary applies to this song, but anyway

@Filippa (7) “Hooray, hooray – such a fun and upbeat song.”

@DominoDancing (7) “Cute guitar licks.”

@Maki (8.25) “I know the chorus of this one! It's a very pretty song overall, I love the singer's voice.”

@DJHazey (8.5) “The second example where the song truly grew on me with repeated listens. Add another one to the ‘bumpkin club’ as well. All of these potential country-pop singers taking over indie pop. I like it!”

@berserkboi (8.5) “A simple melody that is very pretty and reminiscent of Jewel!”

@slaybellz (10) “People don't talk about this flawless album enough and it bothers me!”

@An Insider (11) “One of my favorite songs ever”

7. “I mean this is fine and is by far not the worst song here, it's just not that much more interesting than anything else on a mid-00s Starbucks compilation.”

This one wasn't in the game, though I actually nearly included @Filippa's commentary, but I ended up deciding not to as the "hooray, hooray" probably made it too obvious.

I find it interesting that "Dance With Somebody" (which placed at #25 in a recent PJ00s round) outlasted "Painted by Numbers", which actually won PJ00s. I really enjoy both songs.

Huh, I hadn't realised that! Another cool detail is we just eliminated four songs about dancing almost back to back

✦#9(2): Pull Shapes
✖#19✖: I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You
✖#18✖: Crystal
✖#17✖: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
✖#16✖: Dance with Somebody

And it's not even that common a subject here, I think the only other song about dancing in the rate is Heads Will Roll.
