1st Gen Female Soloists - The Rate - Who paved the way?

Wow! Did not see that coming!

Hyori made her debut as a solo artist the same year I got into Kpop, so I've pretty much followed her since her debut. It's been fun to see her evolve as a singer and entertainer. Also "interesting" to note that I did not care for her at all back in 2003 and a few years later It's Hyorish became one of my favorite albums ever.

There's much to admire about Hyori (and the other 1st gen singers, too, of course). She's had a lot of bad luck with her singing career (plagiarism accusations) and received so much criticism (even for petty things), and still she kept coming back strong.

Edit: It just hit me that I don't have Anymotion or AnyClub on my computer.... Gaah!!!!

Ff omg the nostalgia, I always play the basic level one when I was a kid. Now with my experience with PIU, this level is so easy ff. Ah I wish I could find a DDR machine and play again.
I only played the basic level as well because the machine was set up to end the game if you fail and i didn't want to waste my coins dddddd the basic level is still super fun in its own way

Of 80 songs here, you had to be the lowest scorer on my 11?????????

Monster! Vile! Demon!

I mean, I'm not surprised my 11 was the first one to leave and I'm quite glad it ended up in a fairly good position, but stILL.

Despite it being my 11, it's quite complicated to comment about this entry because it's full of traditional elements that I'm not familiar with and internet didn't help me as much (I found out a behind the scenes video of it but guess what??? It's in Korean!!!! Guess who doesn't speak a word of Korean????????????? Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone knows a bit of it, enjoy, I guess).

"Dara Dara", translated in Apple Music as "Moon Moon", is one of the singles from "I Love Natural", AVA's 4th album - and my personal favorite. I consider it the most "traditional" song in her discography, as it's a perfect mix of traditional/folk and techno. Some instruments such as gayageum and one of the flutes (daegeum, maybe? it doesn't sound like a piri by dreamcatcher) are evident and they bring such a charm to the song, plus it's usually the kind of sound I enjoy in folk music*

*DISCLAIMER: I know some people might think I hate folk and its subgenres because of... reasons, but that's not true!!!!! I'm not gonna lie it's usually hit or miss. To be honest, it mostly depends on the subgenre? I'm not into celtic folk, for example. ~East Asian folk is more palatable to my ears because I'm used to it from eastern media (yes, I mean animes and games ddddd). When mixed with techno and trance music, it just becomes even better!!!!!

I tried to find out what kind of dance inspired her choreography and outfit, but I'm not sure about this because people wear those kinds of long gloves in several types of dance. According to the reliable source called some random commenter translated on google, it comes from mask dance and puppet dance.

ANYWAY, in short, I adore the elements, I adore the video, the choreography, the outfit, the techno part... pretty much everything. It's either my favorite or my second favorite song of hers, because I can't properly decide between it and "Q", also from the same album.

It was good while it lasted. @berserkboi is EVIL.

@berserkboi (6,4): More fun bopping!

Oh oh! I'm not helping, but back in 2003-2004 I found an article that mentioned the traditional dances that inspired Dara Dara's choreography. Of course, internet (and English info on Kpop songs/artists) was much smaller back then, and I'll never be able to find the source again. And also, the name of the dances were romanized, so I have no idea if it was mask dance or puppet dance. Like I said, I'm not helping!

I love love LOVE the MV for Dara Dara. It's almost my favorite - only second to the MV for You. Actually, I LOVE just about everything about this song and its choreography. And the album itself is flawless (just like Lee Jung Hyun's previous three albums).

Yes, you are vile, as you already showed in the last few eliminations.

First of all, AVA has another "Crazy" in her discography, so be sure not to mix them up!

Again, I'm a bit surprised by this leaving now because I expected it to be in the top 3 AVA tracks in the rate along with "Come" and "Change". Is it a sign that "Come" is with its days counted??? We will find out... next year hahahahahaha I'm so funny

Great 11 pick, @Kneehigh Girl! Sorry it's leaving soon.

"Crazy", "Going Crazy" or "Michyeo" is one of the singles from her third album, "Magic to Go to My Star". As I mentioned in Half's elimination, I find the polarizing energy of this album's singles so funny - "Half" being the campy happy sister, whilst "Crazy" being the dark, aggressive, melancholic sister. And I truly mean aggressive - look at this google translated chorus:

"When I was crazy because of you, I didn't know I would go crazy
I was trapped in happiness and dedicated everything to love
I didn’t know how you could leave
I want to hurt you and hurt your memories
I wish you weren't in this world
I'll hate you and resent you forever"

The MV portrays AVA finding out she was being cheated on by her boyfriend with another man. The fun fact? It's actually a true story. fff

"Meanwhile, Lee Jung Hyun also revealed that her boyfriend has been captivated by one of her other male seonbae, “I really didn’t want to talk about it because that person still did not come out clean about it. I saw the 2 of them hugging and kissing, and at that time I thought I didn’t want to live anymore.”"

I mean... she low-key outed her ex in a blind item ddddddddd but anyway. It's always been one of my favorite singles of hers (and one of my worst results in contests!!!! I haven't forgotten, PJ00's crew!) even though it's not as technoish as my other personal faves. It makes up for it as being her second darkest single ("Peace" portrays wars, so you can't really beat that).

And just because it's New Year's:

★★★

@Kneehigh Girl (11): Michyeo was the song that introduced me to Lee Jung Hyun and K-pop, so obviously it’s going to be my 11. I did not fall in love with the song right away (!!!!), but the song’s structure (and the video) fascinated me so much, I kept going back to it and one day it dawned on me that the song was amazing. The rest, as they say, is history XD

@berserkboi (6,2): Bopping while cringing at the vocal ddd

Happy New Year, unnies! I hope you have a fabulous 2022 and healthy minds and bodies (as we need it thanks to the pandemic). Thank you for following this until now and I hope I can count on you until the end.

There won't be any eliminations in the first few days because I have to focus on my master's application - I still have to arrange some documents AND write a motivation letter, which I've never done before. Yay! I'll try to resume everything by the next weekend, at least.

All I can say is there is a tie next, and your 11s will be safe for a little while.

Now let me enjoy the last 10 minutes of 2021. dddd

First of all, I just want to mention that she is not the famous Korean actress!

She used to be a dancer and a model when she debuted in 2002. "Answer The Phone" is a single from her debut album. I don't know what she is up to nowadays - apparently, she released some random singles and OSTs years ago, but the latest thing I found about her was about her marriage (which became a hot topic when she and her husband started dating because of the age gap). Most of the news I've found were about the actress or AoA's Mina.

About the song, I was today years old when I found out 1. this is actually a cover of another k-pop song and this has a lot of samples - from some popular artists, actually. According to whosampled, it samples James Brown, MC Hammer, and M*ch**l J*cks*n. Apparently, just small details of each - Hammer's is the most evident of the three. Also, there is a cover in English done by Filipino-American singer Roxie.

It's a bop! I just listened to the original version and I personally prefer Mina's cover - even though the former is not bad either. Maybe it's just me being more used to it. I like it more than usual to classify it as "fun filler" but it's not memorable enough for me to find it a "hot banger" - hence an 8. Which is still great!

★★★

@Kneehigh Girl (8): A guilty pleasure, simply put.

@berserkboi (8): Fun little banger!

★★★

I *think* JiNi (one of the members from K.I.S.S) did an Enlgish version of the song as well, or at least a demo. I'm sure I've heard it in English with the original arrangement. Also pretty sure JiNi was one of the songwriters for the song. She was an uncredited songwriter for one of Mina's songs (Turn) from her second album at the very least.

K.I.S.S had a massive hit (as far as I've understood it) with Because I'm A Girl, but then they faded into obscurity or something.

I like K.I.S.S's version, but Mina's version is surperior in a guilty pleasure kind of way.

So, whilst our dear "Coming of age ceremony" is safe, Park Ji Yoon is not! She loses "Steal Away", from her second album, "Blue Angel". The video is basically a fanfic where love started thanks to car problems. So romantic.

It's personally my least favorite of her pre-COAC songs in the rate, so no wonder it's the one who placed the highest ddddd it's not particularly bad, I just like the melody of the others more. By the way, I believe the rapper isn't credited in this song, because I couldn't find out who he is. Maybe I'm just bad with researching after all!!

Also, you are not the only ones who liked this, as it's one of the few older songs Ji Yoon still performs. It's from before her JYP era, so maybe that's why. Stay strong, COAC fans!

★★★

@berserkboi (10): Sasha’s I Feel Lonely but make it K-Pop!

@Kneehigh Girl (7): The chorus is really nice and the arrangement is really playful and fun.

We start the 8+ with Chae Jung-an, also spelled Chae Jung An and Chae Jungahn. Instead of the usual singer-to-actress path, she started as an actress in 1996 then debuted in music in 1998. However, she only released three albums; her acting career is still active - there is a web series in which she was cast called "The King of Pigs". It's gonna air next month!

She also has a youtube channel AND most of her videos have English subs:

Accessible queen!

Looking, perhaps Tess was the most appropriate pick for this rate because it actually has a music video? dddd

And I even prefer it to Letter, but both are 10s. I confess that I haven't heard her first album; the second one has her most well-known songs (at least I believe so), and the third one should be available on Spotify. There is neither Letter nor Tess, but there is Magic which sounds as, in a nutshell, a dance song for a space warrior-themed show. I enjoy both dance songs AND space warriors, so 10/10. There are some slower songs/ballads in there too!!!! So you might enjoy something.

★★★

@berserkboi (9,5): Eurobeat Realness!

@Kneehigh Girl (8): Hello singer whose albums I have on my computer, but haven’t gotten around to listening to yet. Shame on me!
