The way we are eliminating two of the most iconic tracks back to back.....................................

"Wa" is the "proper" debut of Lee Jung Hyun as an actress and her biggest hit to this day. it topped the charts and won several awards. It was also where several elements of her image were established, such as
- Pinky mic

- Fan

- Outfits (especially in this era)

(my personal favorite below!!!!! this dress is GOALS to this day)

And, of course, the techno sound.

She always does some modern takes off her signature mark and that's basically the closest we will get to new music <3

The song is also playable in some rhythm games and, as I said before, this is how I first heard a song of hers - or pretty much a k-pop song at all. So if you have to blame someone for the fact I'm a k-pop fan, blame her!

When I was younger, I used to prefer "Change" over "Come". Now... I don't know? Maybe it's because "Wa" is such a unique and powerful song that it's hard to compare it to anything else - even to songs in her discography. Moreover, if I were to say which songs remind me of/represent the 1st generation the most, this one would definitely be among the chosen ones. I mean, she became the queen of techno pretty much because of it and its impact. We went to her star because of it. She molded my taste with it. I'll forever be grateful for that.

I had hoped this would win (as my 11 was chanceless) but it was comforting to see half of the rate giving her 10/10s. If I remember correctly, five 10s is the highest number of 10s to a song so far? Anyway, now that you can stream it on Spotify, go for it!!!! Perhaps we get some good numbers and we get a surprise new song from her after baby AVA is born!!!! hahahaha so funny not even I believe that but seriously stream her!

★★★

@Kneehigh Girl (10): This was the third song by Lee Jung Hyun I heard, and by now I was already completely sold. This song helped to skyrocket her to my number 1 spot for all eternity.

@FunkyButChic (10): Lee Jung Hyun arrived on the scene fully formed as an artist. Legendary behaviour.

@RUNAWAY (8,5): I love how Eurobeat this is!

@berserkboi (8,3): What in the Eurodance euphoria??? Enjoy the boppiness but the vocal cacophony starts to get grating!

I knew this was coming the moment @Ana Raquel posted about Lee Jung Hyun on Spotify! "You want the good news first, or the bad news". XD

Good thing you started with the good news! That means I'm less upset than I should be!

I mean, I still think she should've made it to the Top 5 (and Bada better not win the whole thing).

I swear the Spotify part was coincidental!!! I just had heard about it yesterday............. which just happened to clash with the elimination. It was ~***desteenee***~

Another big one falls down! Baek Ji Young loses her last track, "Smile". It was a single from her 4th album, "Smile". It's the last album before she went on a short hiatus and returned in 2006 with the work that helped her emerge and stay in the industry despite the sex scandal. It's also her last latin-influenced single before she started to mainly sing ballads.

I have never read the lyrics of the song, but I did so after some mentions that they were pretty sad. I couldn't find a proper English translation, so here is the google translation:

Why are you waiting for me Do you still love me with a lot of flaws
I always feel you behind me, wet as much as my tears
Why don't you hate me? If you didn't know me, you'd be fine.
You met me and I got sad eyes, but someone who makes me smile so easily

If you weren't an idiot, you'd have kicked me out already.
The deeper I get to know you, the more my heart trembles and the more I want you
Even though I know you will hug me and hurt the nails that are deeply embedded in my heart

If it had been me instead of you, I would have dared to hold your outstretched hand
If you hadn't been an idiot, he'd have kicked me out already.
The deeper I get to know you, the more my heart trembles and the more I want you
Even though I know you will hug me and hurt the nails that are deeply embedded in my heart

Never again, I'll never get this kind of love while I live
The more I love, the more I learn, I protect your happiness
This love that is like a well that I would not have known without you, I will give it to you, leave

For a song called "Smile", it's indeed sad. Well, most of her uptempos are as well ffff "Burden" and "Sad Salsa" come to mind. The single features traditional percussion elements as well - and she plays the instrument in lives!!!!! Multitalented queen!

This song has been in the top 10 since the third voter and never left. It has also been in the top 5 since halfway through the voters. I can't deny that I was... surprised? It's a good song, but I can't see how it's better than "Burden"... or "Tears"... or "Come"... Had you told me a year ago she would be the highest-placed song of hers, I wouldn't have believed it. Oh well, democracy is democracy. Congrats on her top 5 spot!

@RUNAWAY (10): this is AMAZINGGGGG. I’m so in love with her voice and her sound.

Having the majority of the entries in the top 5, Uhm Jung Hwa loses a song. This time, it's a single from her second album, "Uhm Jung Hwa 2".

To sum up the entry:

For real, though, as much as I enjoy the song, the first thing that comes to mind from this era is the hair.

And so it goes.

It's an uptempo song where she shows her hair game at the MV and her talent at the live performances - along with some men in black with black sunglasses. The way she inspired MIB!

In the same era, she went from an extreme to another: the femme fatale in "Sad Expectation" became a vulnerable angel in the ballad "A Love Only Heaven Permits":

Apparently, this was the point where she started to shine even more, given that the combo "Rose of Betrayal" + "Poison" + "Invitation" would come right next and the rest is history.

I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by this result? I didn't expect it to do this well, as it isn't nearly as mentioned and praised as the ones I mentioned above. Still, it never left the top 10 once it got in there. Deserved, though! It's great and the intro/outro are A++++. I think I like it more visually than musically, tough (which is not a problem per see!!!!!).

★★★

@Attis (10): Now this is an unexpected delicious dance banger. Whew what amazing new jack swing / disco combination, Madonna wish she wrote this tbh

@berserkboi (9,5): Another great track!

@Kneehigh Girl (6): The instrumental parts are really good. I didn’t expect an up-tempo song with this title, so it was a pleasant surprise.

I am sad okay!!!

This is one of these anthems that represents an entire generation. I believe anyone who joins the K-pop rabbit hole will stumble upon it at some point - perhaps earlier than one can imagine.

"Poison" is a single from her fourth album, "Invitation", and also the start of her most lucrative era - according to Miss Jung Hwa herself. Two fun facts: she used to hate it because it sounded a bit like trot??? Now she loves it and ranked it her second favorite song, just below "Pupil". Also, a minuscule bit of it is played on a Rage Against The Machine Song??????
RockKitty.gif

"Poison" was one of my first contacts with the first generation, and, surprisingly, it wasn't because I heard it in a rhythm game? I was starting to know a bit more about Lee Jung Hyun and becoming a fan when I saw a post? page? article? recommending other famous songs from that generation, and "Poison" was the first on the list. I never forgot the red album cover and her french bob (?) haircut, and that also applies to the melody. One of the most remarkable techno beats I've heard.

I have to say I expected this to grab at least one 11? Perhaps it's just me wishing it was her best-placed track on this rate? No offense to the Invitation fans because also remarkable!!!! I can't complain about its position, though. However, I can complain about the near bottom 10 I got in KSOTY when I supersunmied Dahye's remake of it. MONSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

★★★

@berserkboi (9,5): Gorgeously cacophonous song!

@Kneehigh Girl (7): Why am I getting Namie Amuro’s Try Me-vibes from the opening? I’ve actually heard this song before. It’s pretty good! - given that Namie's Try Me is the best song to be ever produced in Asia, this is a massive compliment!!!!
