2020 Album Challenge Thread: And Go!

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by ohnostalgia, Dec 28, 2019.

  1. Been meaning to post these for ages:

    Artist/act: Stella Jang
    Album: Stella I (2020)

Verdict: A chilled-out album. I find it a bit boring in places.

    Artist/act: Reol
    Album: Jijitsujo (2018)

Verdict: Another good album from Reol. I love the circus vibe of the first song.

    Artist/act: Momoiro Clover Z
    Album: Amaranthus (2016)

Verdict: A bit of a mixed bag for me. Still, there are some good songs on it.

    Artist/act: Babymetal
    Album: Metal Resistance (2016)

Verdict: This album sounds kinda bad on my headphones for some reasons. The melodies are good, but it sounds quite hollow for some reason.

    Artist/act: Rina Sawayama
    Album: SAWAYAMA (2020)

Verdict: My new favourite album of the year. I don’t know a better pop girl album released this year. It’s so special.

    Artist/act: APink
    Album: Look (2020)

Verdict: An average girl group mini. It’s pretty, but also pretty forgettable. Maybe my expectations were too high.

    Artist/act: April
    Album: Da Capo (2020)

Verdict: A mini-album that is a bit too cutesy for my tastes.

    Artist/act: GWSN
    Album: The Keys (2020)

Verdict: All of GWSN’s minis have been really interesting but this is not. A shame.

    Artist/act: Oh My Girl
    Album: Nonstop (2020)

Verdict: Again – all of Oh My Girl’s minis have been pretty good, but I feel like they’ve lost their magical spark. At least the title track seems to be doing pretty well for them. (And I’d probably still buy the album.)

    Artist/act: mxmtoon
    Album: dawn (2020)

Verdict: A soothing singer-songwriter album. Perfect for anxious times.

  4. I'm obsessed with this. I love stats!
  5. I have a more defined picture of my listening habits now especially as my mood determines how much music I listen to. This is a example of the format I’ve been trying for April which delves in Weekly Statistics though a part of me thinks I should still type up my initial impressions instead of posting an image:

  6. Dang it, this month flew by so fast. I'm too tired for a mid-level effort write-up, so I'll just put the ones I had on repeat in bold.

  7. I might as well post weeks 15-17 since I’ve posted 14 anyway just like this post if you approve of my statistical extraness. But I’ll type up my summary for this week.

  8. @SophiaSophia those graphics are incredible. Do you make them from scratch or is it a template?
Phonetics Boy and Crisp X like this.
  9. I adapted the running log template in the numbers app on my ipad as my original spreadsheet was beginning to get too big the app kept crashing so I needed something workable. If I had a computer and access to photoshop the level of extra would be even more higher.
  10. I haven't kept up with my excel doc, and probaly have +100 albums to list since my latest post. But if I could make graphics this good, it would remotivate me dd. I stan @SophiaSophia.

And Weather Girls and FEMM! What a throwback.

    Artist/act: Lennon Stella
    Album: Three. Two. One. (2020)

Verdict: Harmless pop. It’s not bad, but it’s not great. Check out “Fear Of Being Alone.”

    Artist/act: NCT Dream
    Album: Reload (2020)

Verdict: A really good boy band mini album. I just wonder if there’s anything that sets them apart from other NCT subunits.

    Artist/act: Suzy
    Album: Yes? No? (2017)

Verdict: Slow music for a rainy Sunday evening. I find it a bit too boring.

    Artist/act: Suzy
    Album: Faces of Love (2018)

Verdict: It’s nice enough but I would not listen to it before you’ve had a strong cup of coffee.

    Artist/act: Fiona Apple
Album: Fetch The Bolt Cutters (2020)

Verdict: My first Fiona Apple album. It sounds like how my anxiety feels.

  15. A Perfume album unknowingly made into this challenge for Week 18 and I shall post my April Recap later this week.

    Week 18

    118. Oh My Girl | Nonstop | 2020 | ⭑⭑⭑ | Highlights: Nonstop, Dolphin, Neon & Krystal | Replay: Only the title track

Kinda over Tropi-Bops as title tracks in 2020 but Nonstop is cute, but Neon, Krystal and Dolphin is a little better but not in a obvious this should have been the title track way. I would have preferred if Flower Tea was the last track because having a ballad in the middle ruins the flow. That said I love the board game concept a lot, Nonstop is probably one of my favourite K-Pop MVs from a purely aesthetic point of view.

    119. GWSN | The Keys | 2020 | ⭑⭑⭑½ | Highlights: BAZOOKA! & Tweaks ~ Heavy Cloud But No Rain | Replay: Yes

BAZOOKA! is what Oh My Girl’s comeback should have been, I like the jazzy vibe of the aerialist (wonderboy), Tweaks ~ Heavy Cloud But No Rain is a House music bop I can get behind and After The Bloom is a little generic but I don’t mind. I just wish they’d be kinder to my fingers and have some shorter song titles but that’s really my problem than theirs. Apart from that a couple of songs give me very low-key f(x) vibes with extra emphasis on very low-key. I now feel confident enough to listen to their other 2 mini albums before this one.

    120. NCT DREAM | Reload | 2020 | ⭑⭑⭑⭑ | Highlights: Ridin’, Quiet Down, 7 Days & Love Again | Replay: Yes
Only NCT DREAM affirming their status as best NCT Unit before the rightful return of Mark. But I do wish there was a degree of separation between the Sub Units as they are all amalgamating into NCT 127.

    121. mxmtoon | dawn | 2020 | ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑ | Highlights: Everything | Replay: Yes

I love it when you hear a collection of songs that’s suitable for plenty of interpretative dance moments.

    122. K3 | Alle Kleuren | 2000 | ⭑⭑⭑⭑ | Highlights: Everything bar Mijoen & Om Te Dromen Replay: Obviously

Finally all of K3’s older albums are on Spotify in my country, completely irrelevant but I’m taking having Coco Jambo stuck in my head all week as a sign. That said a couple of songs on Alle Kleuren are in the same sonic palette as Coco Jambo. Anyway I’m bopping like it’s the year 2000. Miljoen is oddly reminiscent of the number 2 multiplication song I had to listen to as a child.

    123. Perfume | Future Pop | 2018 | ⭑⭑ | Highlights: Tokyo Girl & Tenku | Replay: Only for the Perfume Rate

I don’t wan’t to spoil my commentary but Perfume deserved better than this collection of not acclaimed assorted songs.

    124. Sateen | Crystallized | 2020 | ⭑⭑⭑⭑ | Highlights: Everything | Replay: Yes

I absolutely the love glamorous club/disco aesthetic especially if it’s from LGBT+ artists. This artwork is an amazing image I’m 100% here for it.
  16. [136]
    Artist/act: Ghost Data
    Album: Girl’s Love (2017)

Verdict: An entire album inspired – in the artist’s own words – by magical girl anime. For lovers of J-pop, synthpop and anime. Nice background music. I just wish it hit a little harder. Check it out here:

    Artist/act: Ghost Data
    Album: Cruel Choreography (2020)

Verdict: Music to get you hyped while playing video games. Some of the “harder” songs are quite good.

    Artist/act: Zuzu
    Album: How It Feels (2020)

Verdict: Bratty Brit-pop that’s really nicely produced. I love. Check it out here:

    Artist/act: Honeyblood
    Album: In Plain Sight (2019)

Verdict: Polished indie rock. Perhaps too polished. It offers nothing new but I do like it.

    Artist/act: Honeyblood
    Album: Babes Never Die (2016)

Verdict: Not-so-polished indie rock with glimpses of brilliance. I like Walking At Midnight and Justine, Misery Queen. Check it out here:

    Artist/act: JoJo
    Album: good to know (2020)

Verdict: This is pretty boring to my ears. I can’t really tell the songs apart. But she sounds good.

    Artist/act: GOT7
    Album: DYE (2020)

Verdict: I don’t like the music that much but I like the album cover.

WHY THE FUCK DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS ALBUM?!??!!!? Highly, highly recommend.
  19. Your scores for Jagged > Chaos are pretty aligned with mine, so I'm interested to see how I feel about Flavors & Havoc on my first listen in comparison. Her fans on here seem to universally loathe Havoc & think Flavors is quite good.

See, Flavors to me just felt like more of the same? I don't know if it was because I had listened to most of her albums the day before. The progression in sound just wasn't there. Havoc and Bright Lights was catnip for me, as I adore Guy Sigsworth, so I ate it up. It's quite a different sound for Alanis, so I understand why for longtime fans it felt like a disappointment.
