My boyfriend's favorite artist and pioneering social conscious singer songwriter
Tracy Chapman is here to soften this blow for me:
I knew when I put this song in the rate that it'd be destined for a Bottom 10 finish. I mean a near operatic First Nation-Classical Music fusion ballad is not gonna be long lived in a rate whose main draws are Janelle Monae and Troye Sivan. What made me have to include this in the rate is the power of his live performance. His Polaris performance is captivating; I’ve watched it countless times. I urge you all to take 8 minutes out of your day and give this video the attention it deserves:
Dutcher went on to win the 2018 Polaris Music Prize- which is sort of like the Mercury Prize of Canada. As a Two-Spirit Wolastoqiyik member of the
Tobique First Nation, Jeremy Dutcher marvelously combines his classical training with the traditional songs of his First Nation. In discussing this song with
Exclaim! he explained that
"You are able to hear a speech by Jim Paul about death and what comes after, which ends the piece," Dutcher said of the track. "The lyrics, 'Ya-ni-gwe-do', are likely vocables, but could also be an older form of language no longer spoken."
He continued, "I'm doing this work because there's only about a hundred Wolastoqey speakers left. It's crucial for us to make sure that we're using our language and passing it on to the next generation. If you lose the language, you're not just losing words; you're losing an entire way of seeing and experiencing the world from a distinctly indigenous perspective."
I know this is quite removed from the general genre of the rate but I adore this and wanted to make you all listen to it! Parts remind me of early Antoni and Nina Simone in it’s combination of prodigious piano and androgynous vocals. This slides so perfectly in between “Hope There’s Someone” and “Lilac Wine” on a Not Like the Other Gays Playlist.
Now let's read through your commentary which honestly can't be topped by
@dylanaber scoring it a 6?:
Only two of our lower scorers were brave enough to leave any commentary and they still gave a decent 5 and 5.5 so all you tasteless heathens throwing 2's at this Artistic Genius WHAT'S GOOD?
Untitled i mean i could praise his floaty vocals, but this is a drag
Ufint Opera? Opera?! I never thought I would have to rate a song like this. I mean, I know nothing about this kind of music, but I guess it’s fine. I’m not loving it, but I’m not finding myself wanting to skip it either.
Now onto those of you who either wanted to love the song or were confused by your love for the song:
CorgiCorgiCorgi this is intense! I think I like it?
The Hot Rock I have a minimal amount of experience with more classical arrangements so this was a bit out of my wheelhouse. I really liked what I heard though. This was so calming.
Kalonite I don't know what this is. I'm confused, but I like it.
Slaybellz I find this blend of opera and indigenous music really interesting. Just wish I could get into the song more.
Now onto those of you who have taste and aren't confused by it:
Reboot I low-key love this. This song makes me want to travel the world and take on an army of mythical creatures.
Pop3Blow2 Well, this is different! Pretty sure I would’ve never heard this without the rate. It’s so ethereal, that I good see myself checking out more of him if in the right mood. Great inclusion.
Constantino Unlike anything else in this rate, and a vital inclusion, irrespective of how early this will most likely fall. Sitting between the tacky, reductive and dated ‘Diamonds’ and ‘Thursday’ in the rate playlist, this is a true gem.
Yuuurei This is quite haunting and beautiful and I love hearing some First Nations representation.
londonrain This was unexpected! It’s rather beautiful even though it’s not normally the type of song I’d come back to. The vocals!
And now a comment about this placing at number 88:
Untouchable Ace Heartbreaking
