Magnus Hirschfeld was a German physician and sexologist who founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee which is considered the first group to be committed to advocacy for homosexual and transgender individuals. He was an amazing man and I highly recommend reading his wikipedia page as he held more thoughtful views on gay rights, mental health, and the intersection of gay rights and women empowerment than many people do nowadays.
Once again, another one of my favorite extras is done in by my inability to commit to giving out a 10. I mean, a 9.75? Really? I adore this song in all its queer glory. Those opening lines are so perfectly subversive and it's all wrapped up in this sweet throw back sound that still feels very of the moment. King Princess is the stage name of Mikaela Strauss and she was the first person Mark Ronson signed to his label. I'm a huge fan of her vocals and in particular her vocal stylings in this song, the way she rises up on the "So I'll waaaaaaiiiiit for yoooouuuu" is heavenly. Then the lyrics of the bridge are so tragically relatable "I hope that you're happy with me in your life/ I hope that you won't slip away in the night" for an anxious mess in a relationship like me.
King Princess does a wonderful lyrical breakdown for
Genius where she talks about taking inspiration from the way queer people in the past (like in the 1950's) had to be publicly closeted and couldn't express their love. I've always interpreted this as dating someone who is in the closet (hello personal experiences) but she also extends it as a metaphor/analogy for unrequited love. Also in reference to the pre-chorus, she explains that she uses religious imagery since religion and queerness are "oil and water" (hello again personal experiences). She also explains how when we put the person we're with up on a higher level, the relationship becomes second to your own adoration. King Princess was also inspired by the wonderful book
The Price of Salt and the movie inspired by it,
Carol, in writing "1950." She
explained:
“Historically a publicly unaccepted but incredibly rich culture, queer love was only able to exist privately for a long time, expressed in society through coded art forms. I wrote this song as a story of unrequited love in my own life, doing my best to acknowledge and pay homage to that part of history.”
What's been really interesting reading interviews with King Princess is just how
young she is! It makes me feel very much like a grandpa to read in interview where she explains slang terms I've never heard to Mark Ronson. Reading her interview with
Schmooze and she says:
“You’re your truest self when you’re young, and when somebody says something, and you’re like, Oh, maybe I’m not normal, you shut it down,” she says. “It’s always a process to rediscover those parts of yourself,” she says about coming out at 13.
Made me do a double take. It's so beguiling to me that kids are coming out at 13 (and I know some are coming out even younger) when it took me a good 5 years to even come out to myself. It's also funny to hear someone so young reflecting on their youth, but as I made clear in my last elimination childhood does shit to us.
Anyways, y'all are a bunch of heathens for kicking this out so soon:
Pop3blow2 Oooh, another new discovery. I like her voice.
Verandi I keep hearing "fuck you" instead of "for you" and it actually makes the song better.
ufint Nice vocals, beautiful vocals.
Kalonite I'm not usually a fan of the whole 'I wish I lived in the 20s/50s/60s!' thing, so I'm glad that this song doesn't actually play into that trope and plays with the idea that the era was pretty awful for women and queer people.
Slaybellz It’s alright but I didn’t really find her music interesting until she released "Pussy Is God".
The Hot Rock Okay, this packed an emotional punch and a Half. I wasn't ready.
Reboot GORGEOUS. King Princess is one of my favourite discoveries of this year. Her EP is fantastic and describes my feelings so well.
