Some thoughts:
-I cannot believe that Years & Years and Janelle Monae have the same number of songs in the Top 50
- I CANNOT believe "If You're Over Me" is Top 50!?
-Some of the extras that made it Top 50 really surprised me, mainly in a good way with one glaring exception
-The run from 50 to 40 is, in my opinion, the messiest. I await the meltdowns with bated breath.
-We kick off this messy run with another 11 lost!

Our first cut from the Top 50 is introduced by Wendy Carlos who was a pioneering electronic musician whose album Switched on Bach popularized the Moog synthesizer and won her a trio of Grammys. She went on to compose music for Tron, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining. She was one of the first prominent public figures to discuss their gender affirming surgery in a major publication in 1979.

I got the good side of life
Travelled the universe twice
So many thoughts I wanted to share
But I didn't call because it wouldn't be fair

Ms Sivan gets her Ms Sufjan Stevens on in this remorseful ode to a lover left. He debuted it with “My My My!” back in the 1800’s on SNL and it’s quieter tone and production flourishes calmed all us Blue Neighbourhood stans that he hadn’t forgotten his bread and butter. Despite its obvious Call Me By Your Name roleplaying, it’s a strikingly moving song and the most emotionally resonating song off of Bloom.

Troye has explained that the song is an attempt to honestly talk about a break up where he came out rather unscathed and his ex was left hurting. Many fans believe this ex is Conor Franta-another gay Youtuber- and there are A LOT of feelings about “Tronnor” online. However, sidestepping that mess, Troye gave a rather nice lyrical breakdown to Genius. I love when he references how odd it is after a break up that this person you used to talk to incessantly is suddenly unreachable. You could text them but you know it’s not fair. Maybe in time you’ll talk again, but for now you both need distance. In an album full of pop star posturing and questionable lyrical takes, it’s nice how straightforward and honest “The Good Side” is.

Now let's hear from y'all!
ufint Since I was the one left on the bad side of things after the roughest breakup of my life this is kinda hard to listen to. This makes me so, so melancholic but it’s kind of a cathartic experience as well.
slaybellz This is basically like a modern Simon & Garfunkel song.
Untouchable Ace Why did he want to make a 70's demo for an album track? Is that on trend? It's stuff like this that teally dragged the album down. In his first album his slowies were sonically cut with the up-tempos, here they don't make sense.
Reboot I find myself sort of wishing I liked this song more as it sounds like the sort of song I SHOULD love. Unfortunately he does not quite have the range for it.
Music is Life Love the acoustic guitar. And the piano. And his voice.
untitled i can't stand this kind of shit. those dead ass vocals and that little elves dancing round the campfire production. stomach churns
Kalonite Utterly gorgeous. People say Troye can't emote, but this track manages to really make it work. The matter of fact vocals recognising that he's walked away unscathed perfectly complement the swelling instrumental, with regret and guilt bubbling away under the surface. I love the blossoming electronics too.
The Hot Rock Okay so this one grew on me a bit. I thought it was my least favorite of the songs on Bloom but this clicked with me a bit more. Really enjoyed the production and electronic flourishes throughout the track. The vocals and lyrics aren't really cutting it for me still but eh.
Posh Spears If more of his songs were like this I wouldn’t hate on him as much. Allie, her impact!
ConstantinoThis has a nice refrain but it’s about 90 seconds too long.
Verandi Wouldn't even make a good b-side. Badum-tss.
King Bruno The twinkling synths from his past are gone and have been replaced by melancholic strings and distorted electronics. “The Good Side” shows Troye from a far more mature perspective, while his lyricism has reached a new level of perfection.

Pop3blow2 This song is so beautiful. It’s the song that made me start to be a fan of him, honestly. I’m a pretty big fan of Duncan Sheik (I got to wax poetic about him in the 90’s one-hit-wonder rate, yay) & this song really reminds me of his best moments. A little Rufus-y Wainwright, too. The ending of this song is a mini-epic… and what bumped it to my 11 for this rate.

Well, crap. At least it made the top 50, I guess. Based on all the calls for Troye to vacate, I knew he'd be leaving soon. I hoped it wouldn't be this song, though.

Full disclosure, choosing my 11 for this rate was initially very tough, but if I was to pick now 'Molecules' by Hayley would be my unbothered 11. I didn't discover it until the rate, so I declared it was 'too new to me' at the time, so I refrained from bumping it to my 11, (in case of recency bias.)

My fave album in the rate was Dirty Computer, but I was paralyzed trying to choose an 11 from it . So, it came down between 'Stay Down' & 'The Good Side' for my 11. I went with the The Good Side, because it was actually my most played song of all the songs in the rate. It was probably the song that made me care about him at all, actually. I knew couple of Troye songs, but he'd always been on the fringes of my interest.

I'm satisfied I gave this my 11. It's so pretty. I love the production & vocal. The dramatics of when it builds briefly at 2:25 & drops out gives me goosebumps. The breakdown at 3:17 going into the instrumental coda that ends the song were one of my favorite musical moments of 2018.

There is somethig about The Good Side that just doesn't sit well with me. I like the airy beginning and ending, but the melodies in the verses and the chorus remind me of some old Russian song. Maybe that's what triggers me. In the end it's fine, and it could have stayed a bit longer.

He/Him
I was pretty happy to catch up and see the right first Xtine/Hayley/MNEK tracks leaving, I think they were all my least faves

HOWEVER, as much of a Troye hater I am, The Good Side was easily his best song here. Might as well throw the rest in the trash (not like that will happen)
