Renowned author James Baldwin introduces our next cut. Yesterday would have marked Baldwin’s 95th birthday and his writing remains just as sharp today as when it was published. Baldwin’s thinking on race in America as well as sexuality was ahead of its time and influences many of today’s current activists. His novel Giovanni’s Room is one of the most beautiful pieces of literature I’ve ever read!

“Love him,’ said Jacques, with vehemence, ‘love him and let him love you. Do you think anything else under heaven really matters? And how long, at the best, can it last, since you are both men and still have everywhere to go? Only five minutes, I assure you, only five minutes, and most of that, helas! in the dark. And if you think of them as dirty, then they will be dirty— they will be dirty because you will be giving nothing, you will be despising your flesh and his. But you can make your time together anything but dirty, you can give each other something which will make both of you better—forever—if you will not be ashamed, if you will only not play it safe.’ He paused, watching me, and then looked down to his cognac. ‘You play it safe long enough,’ he said, in a different tone, ‘and you’ll end up trapped in your own dirty body, forever and forever and forever—like me.

Somehow I wish I could forget the first time that I fell
Staring up into something I knew all too well
Now we are, eye to eye and I can't recall
Any other way to keep this high

The time has finally come to say farewell to my 11! At the outset of this rate, I never would have thought Ssion would make the Top 10! The fact that he was the last white gay man standing makes me so proud! As you can tell from the scores, “Comeback” benefited from almost all of you finding it at least enjoyable! I’ve written a lot about my journey in falling in love with Ssion and I hope this rate has set some of you on that journey. He’s a one of a kind artist who marries so many seemingly disparate elements into some amazing art!

“Comeback” was the first song Ssion released in the lead up to O and marked his return to music after several years behind the director’s chair. Few songs work so many different angles and still work as well as “Comeback” does. In an interview with Dazed, Cody Critcheloe (the man behind Ssion) explained the though process behind writing “Comeback:”

It was the first song we did for the album and I approached it like a mixtape – I wanted the chorus to have this Kylie feel but we were also into a lot of digital hardcore,” says Critcheloe. “I was like, ‘Oh, we should have the post-chorus poke fun at this current EDM drop and make it sound like Atari Teenage Riot.’ Let’s go really in the red and just fuck it. Let’s make something really incorrect then go back to this pop structure and fuck with the form.”

What I’ve come to love so deeply about Ssion and “Comeback” especially- and the reason it won my 11- is how intrinsically queer everything about the project is. There’s lots of talk in academic circles around “queering” spaces or narratives, but in the sense of reflecting back mainstream ideas through the lens of an outsider, Ssion does just that for pop music. He’s pushing Kylie, sarcastic EDM drops and punk rock into the same song AND it still sounds great! There’s also such a necessary element of camp and humor to the whole proceeding. Yes, he’s pleading for his lover to “come back” but there’s a knowing wink in his eye that this is his comeback record.

I think in every Ssion write up, I’ve mentioned his music video directing talents and guess what? I’m gonna do it again! He’s a true auteur and has created some of my favorite videos both for his own projects and others. In the words of Robyn (!) “I feel like Cody deals in this unrecognised currency of sensuality and subconsciousness that we all know, but it doesn’t have a clear box. It’s funny and sensual. I love that place in between, and finding other people who do too is very satisfying.” I mean, when Robyn speaks so highly of someone, you know they’re good! The video for “Comeback” is a journey and a half and Ssion has referred to it as his attempt at “Bohemian Rhapsody.” He talked with Fader when the video dropped around it’s concept and creation:

What was the idea behind this new video?

With this one, it was sort of the synopsis for the whole album, you know? As I make videos for a record, it kinda unfolds in this weird way where I try not to get too specific with what it's going to be. I finished the album and then I started doing a lot of painting, just because I was frustrated [with] wanting to find someone to put it out and figure out a way to fund the videos or whatnot. Painting was the easiest way to [deal with it], because you don't have to rely on anyone else. You can just do it by yourself, you know? And so when I started painting, it sort of [became] about the songs. These three characters presented themselves, and then that worked its way into this video. I kept thinking about the cow thing and that Pink Floyd album cover. That kind of stuck around. And then I read the Bob Fosse biography, which I loved, and so that was present. It's kind of just like a collage of all those things, really.

What was it about the Pink Floyd cow that piqued your interest?

When I first started doing SSION in 2003, it was like a punk performance troupe — like Suckdog, like Lisa Carver style, GG Allin style — and I would dress like a cow. It was me and two chicks and we all had barnyard animal outfits. I just thought [the Atom Heart Mother cover] was a cool cover. When you get to do your own videos, you get to trust this instinct or impulse and you don't have to articulate it in a way. Whereas when you're making videos for other people, you really have to explain why a cow needs to be there, you know? Whereas with me, I'm just like, It feels right.

I love how not only does he have full control over his artistic vision and creation, he also feels no need to defend it beyond “It feels right.” Sometimes I wish more artists did just that, trusting in their instincts and that we as consumers can react based on our subconscious without a clearly defined line of reasoning for each piece of their art. As he told the New York Times :

“All of these influences coming together is realizing my teen dream.
I finally feel free enough to do anything."

Now what did y’all have to say about my beloved?

Posh Spears WHATABOP!

Londonrain For me the instrumental breaks overpower an otherwise decent song.

Untitled i was not ready for this to pop off like it does. my head!

Pop3blow2 Well, this is a chatiocly delightful bop. I like all the crazy noise scattered about in here, but it still rains a 'song'.

Constantino We love a DISCOVERY don’t we, ladies? This is the kind of queer racket I came here for. I’ve been meaning to listen to the good Ssion and I’m glad I finally have!

Kalonite I was just 'enjoying' this, but then the electronic breakdowns happened and it tipped over into loving it.

Yuuurei I had to put this on repeat for a bit, it's great!

Ufint So I am not minding this, I guess if it went off a little bit harder and had German vocals I could totally dance to this in Berghain or some shady club in Sitges? Grimes could totally have done this had she gone in a different direction and Gaga’s Swine comes to mind. It’s hard all the while keeping it fun electropop.

Gimmework The dub-step disco banger that I desperately needed in 2018 served HOT!

CorgiCorgiCorgi This is the first Ssion song I've ever heard. I'm intrigued…

The Hot Rock Didn't expect the electroclash elements. What a pleasant surprise. I wasn't ready tbh.

Untouchable Ace SOPHIE take note, This is how you do addictive experimental-pop! It just builds and progresses until it explodes in the best way. What a comeback for Ssion..

Introducing our next cut is David Wojnarowicz the legendary American artist and AIDS activist. Wojnarowicz created art that was both beautiful and provocative that has continued to challenge social mores long after his death from AIDS in 1992. There was an extended controversy over his film Fire in My Belly showing a crucifix covered in ants in 2010 at a Smithsonian gallery.

I over-communicate and feel too much
I just complicate it when I say too much
I laugh about it, dream about that casual touch
Sex is fire, sick and tired of acting all tough
I'm hooked on all these feelings
I know exactly what I'm feelin'

We once again must bid adieu to another major artist as Hayley loses her last remaining track at #8! Much like “Comeback,” “Feelings” was more or less universally enjoyed with just a single 5 from known stickler @LE0Night - the next lowest score is a 7.5! Unlike “Comeback,” Hayley wasn’t able to garner any 11’s for her emotional opus and trust me, they mean A LOT as we approach the end!

I have to say as someone who overcommunicates and feels too much, I adore this song! It’s endlessly catchy and Hayley’s vocal delivery is as smooth as ever. At the end of the day, the lyrics take center stage and for all us empathy overloaded beings this song hits a nerve! I hope Hayley continues to explore her vulnerability and how it affects her relationship cause this is a great first take. She’s talked a great deal about the inspiration behind the song and I really enjoyed what she had to say to Billboard:

What was the inspiration behind “Feelings”?

Well, it's a loaded question, there's a lot. Firstly, the song. It started off with me just being frustrated with having people make me feel like I needed to be ashamed of feeling. Kind of like, enjoying this single life, dating world. As soon as you feel it's like, "Oh gosh. You can't feel. How dare you?" And I was like, "Wow. That's really messed up." And I wanted to write a song about that, because if you listen to the lyrics verbatim, it's exactly how I feel. I over-communicate, I feel too much. That's who I am. Why can't I just be myself, and why do I have to be ashamed of that? So that's kind of where the song grew from.

Then, as far as the music video is concerned, I've always wanted to do a music video of me just kind of following this cute girl down the street, and having it be very playful and consensual. But I also wanted to do it in a fresh way, and so that's why I decided to do it in one take, and really give myself a massive headache in figuring out how to do that. It was a crazy challenge, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. And I'm really all about color. When I listen to music, I see color, so visually I'm just really pleased with how it ended up turning out
Ugh I do not miss my dating days girls cause I 100% caught feelings immediately and fucked it up soon after. I skyped my best friend immediately after my first date with my now-fiance (!!!) telling her how I once again fell too hard too fast and fucked it up. I’m gonna side step the whole “when I listen to music, I see color” cause I’m a bit tired of that trope unless the artist seems to truly have synesthia (ahem Lorde). I will however spend more time talking about an amazing queer artist who is also a music video director! I spent a lot of time gushing about Ssion’s artistic vision and while his work can veer into very arty territory and Hayley stays much more mainstream, she’s also an incredibly talented director who’s made it her mission to normalize portrayal of queer love and lust.

The video for “Feelings” presented a new challenge to Hayley the artist-director as she wanted to do it all in one shot but obviously couldn’t be in the scene and behind the scenes at the same time. She discussed the challenges with Billboard explaining:

What was it like to both star in and direct this particular video?

It was very complicated. It normally is just a lot of communication -- just with any of my videos -- but this one especially, because there's just a lot of moving pieces. How we had to do it was I had a stand-in for myself, and then the DP was working on the lighting. I was directing the Steadicam operator, and then the choreographer was focused on my other lead actress.

So we all kind of had our station, and there was a lot of pre-production involved, lots of rehearsals and choreographing it and adjusting it. But we had to plan the camera work days in advance and, you know, by the time we were actually on location, we knew exactly what we were shooting and how we were going to shoot it. It was definitely a lot of teamwork.

Oh did I also mention that she’s an incredible dancer?! I don’t understand how anyone is still sleeping on Hayley at this point? She should be a big pop girl already! I just wish “I Wish” was that momenT instead of the 7/10 track it is #ThatsJustMyOpinion. Something else I can get behind is Hayley’s commitment to diversity including in her visuals. She told Billboard that she found her co-star Alexandra Rodriguez through a friend and expanded upon the difficulty of diverse casting in an interview ith Buzzfeed

"You end up going into the pool of the Hollywood world of trying to cast your actresses, and it's difficult," she said. "There isn't a lot of diversity. I had a specific vision in mind, and then you get a list that's only half a page. You end up having to dig deep to search for the right people."

This is also a great reminder of why it’s important to have people of color not just on the screen but behind the scenes as well!

And finally, I’d be remiss not to give Hayley Kiyoko the proper dues for inspiring the name of this rate with her incredible hashtag and relationship with her fans!

Now what did all you have to say?

Untitled better than most BPG singles. That's What We Call Talent.

Pop3blow2 ‘I’m sorry that I care’ is a relatable & great lyric.

Constantino This bops harder than I anticipated, work Miss Hayley!

Yuuurei One of my favorite songs on this album, along with Wanna Be Missed andSleepover. It's just really catchy and I love all the different layers (?) And Hayley sounds great on it too. Gotta admit it's not all that relatable for me personally though, knowing "exactly what I'm feeling" isn't an emotion I've ever experienced in my damn life..

Gimmework I’m hooked on Hayley and all of her feelings and couldn’t be happier.

The Hot Rock This rate was my first exposure to Hayley's music. This was a great start and my favorite of her tracks listed for the challenge. Could definitely see this fucking me up in the right context.

KingBruno A very straightforward, unabashed electro-pop romp that happens to be very catchy as well. The lyrics in particular are great, which sees Hayley expressing her stance towards the standardized expectations of playing ‘hard to get’ with memorable lines as “I over-communicate and feel too much / I just complicate it when I say too much”.

Kalonite She sounds so much like Katy Perry on this track, but it's cool cause I enjoy this more than about 90% of Witness.

Untouchable Ace Has an easy flow to it from each section of the song structure.

Music is Life BOP. Love the lyrics, and the melody, and the production.

Remorque Immaculate production and while she doesn't have the most distinctive voice in the world, the girl certainly makes it fucking werk. This was a wonderful introduction to Hayley!
