Introducing our next cut is
David Wojnarowicz the legendary American artist and AIDS activist. Wojnarowicz created art that was both beautiful and provocative that has continued to challenge social mores long after his death from AIDS in 1992. There was an extended controversy over his film Fire in My Belly showing a crucifix covered in ants in 2010 at a Smithsonian gallery.
We once again must bid adieu to another major artist as Hayley loses her last remaining track at #8! Much like “Comeback,” “Feelings” was more or less universally enjoyed with just a single 5 from known stickler
@LE0Night - the next lowest score is a 7.5! Unlike “Comeback,” Hayley wasn’t able to garner any 11’s for her emotional opus and trust me, they mean A LOT as we approach the end!
I have to say as someone who overcommunicates and feels too much, I adore this song! It’s endlessly catchy and Hayley’s vocal delivery is as smooth as ever. At the end of the day, the lyrics take center stage and for all us empathy overloaded beings this song hits a nerve! I hope Hayley continues to explore her vulnerability and how it affects her relationship cause this is a great first take. She’s talked a great deal about the inspiration behind the song and I really enjoyed what she had to say to
Billboard:
What was the inspiration behind “Feelings”?
Well, it's a loaded question, there's a lot. Firstly, the song. It started off with me just being frustrated with having people make me feel like I needed to be ashamed of feeling. Kind of like, enjoying this single life, dating world. As soon as you feel it's like, "Oh gosh. You can't feel. How dare you?" And I was like, "Wow. That's really messed up." And I wanted to write a song about that, because if you listen to the lyrics verbatim, it's exactly how I feel. I over-communicate, I feel too much. That's who I am. Why can't I just be myself, and why do I have to be ashamed of that? So that's kind of where the song grew from.
Then, as far as the music video is concerned, I've always wanted to do a music video of me just kind of following this cute girl down the street, and having it be very playful and consensual. But I also wanted to do it in a fresh way, and so that's why I decided to do it in one take, and really give myself a massive headache in figuring out how to do that. It was a crazy challenge, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. And I'm really all about color. When I listen to music, I see color, so visually I'm just really pleased with how it ended up turning out
Ugh I do not miss my dating days girls cause I 100% caught feelings immediately and fucked it up soon after. I skyped my best friend immediately after my first date with my now-fiance (!!!) telling her how I once again fell too hard too fast and fucked it up. I’m gonna side step the whole “when I listen to music, I see color” cause I’m a bit tired of that trope unless the artist seems to truly have synesthia (
ahem Lorde). I will however spend more time talking about an amazing queer artist who is also a music video director! I spent a lot of time gushing about Ssion’s artistic vision and while his work can veer into very arty territory and Hayley stays much more mainstream, she’s also an incredibly talented director who’s made it her mission to normalize portrayal of queer love and lust.
The video for “Feelings” presented a new challenge to Hayley the artist-director as she wanted to do it all in one shot but obviously couldn’t be in the scene and behind the scenes at the same time. She discussed the challenges with Billboard explaining:
What was it like to both star in and direct this particular video?
It was very complicated. It normally is just a lot of communication -- just with any of my videos -- but this one especially, because there's just a lot of moving pieces. How we had to do it was I had a stand-in for myself, and then the DP was working on the lighting. I was directing the Steadicam operator, and then the choreographer was focused on my other lead actress.
So we all kind of had our station, and there was a lot of pre-production involved, lots of rehearsals and choreographing it and adjusting it. But we had to plan the camera work days in advance and, you know, by the time we were actually on location, we knew exactly what we were shooting and how we were going to shoot it. It was definitely a lot of teamwork.
Oh did I also mention that she’s an incredible dancer?! I don’t understand how anyone is still sleeping on Hayley at this point? She should be a big pop girl already! I just wish “I Wish” was that momenT instead of the 7/10 track it is #ThatsJustMyOpinion. Something else I can get behind is Hayley’s commitment to diversity including in her visuals. She told Billboard that she found her co-star Alexandra Rodriguez through a friend and expanded upon the difficulty of diverse casting in an interview ith
Buzzfeed
"You end up going into the pool of the Hollywood world of trying to cast your actresses, and it's difficult," she said. "There isn't a lot of diversity. I had a specific vision in mind, and then you get a list that's only half a page. You end up having to dig deep to search for the right people."
This is also a great reminder of why it’s important to have people of color not just on the screen but behind the scenes as well!
And finally, I’d be remiss not to give Hayley Kiyoko the proper dues for inspiring the name of this rate with her incredible hashtag and relationship with her fans!
Now what did all you have to say?
Untitled better than most BPG singles. That's What We Call Talent.
Pop3blow2 ‘I’m sorry that I care’ is a relatable & great lyric.
Constantino This bops harder than I anticipated, work Miss Hayley!
Yuuurei One of my favorite songs on this album, along with Wanna Be Missed andSleepover. It's just really catchy and I love all the different layers (?) And Hayley sounds great on it too. Gotta admit it's not all that relatable for me personally though, knowing "exactly what I'm feeling" isn't an emotion I've ever experienced in my damn life..
Gimmework I’m hooked on Hayley and all of her feelings and couldn’t be happier.
The Hot Rock This rate was my first exposure to Hayley's music. This was a great start and my favorite of her tracks listed for the challenge. Could definitely see this fucking me up in the right context.
KingBruno A very straightforward, unabashed electro-pop romp that happens to be very catchy as well. The lyrics in particular are great, which sees Hayley expressing her stance towards the standardized expectations of playing ‘hard to get’ with memorable lines as “I over-communicate and feel too much / I just complicate it when I say too much”.
Kalonite She sounds so much like Katy Perry on this track, but it's cool cause I enjoy this more than about 90% of Witness.
Untouchable Ace Has an easy flow to it from each section of the song structure.
Music is Life BOP. Love the lyrics, and the melody, and the production.
Remorque Immaculate production and while she doesn't have the most distinctive voice in the world, the girl certainly makes it fucking werk. This was a wonderful introduction to Hayley!
