All I know is, after the way it was unceremoniously eliminated before the Top 50 in KSOTY, I’m just praying that Cinema lands Top 10 where she belongs.
TXT had been on a steady upwards trajectory ever since debuting, and the public had already gotten familiar with what they were all about, so when it came time for their second full studio album someone at Big Hit snapped and decided it was time for them to show off a new side. Pretty much everything about this comeback shook the fandom to its core: the pop rock sound, the hand mics, sleeveless tops, Taehyun's growling vocals, HueningKai finally blonde... when I tell you that people were killed! This comeback immediately sold as much as all the previous 4 combined on its first week, and I definitely noticed tons of people outside the fandom also being impressed.
The song is a real anthem, I feel like it was made to be performed on tour. The percussion is just amazing and the post chorus, where Seori's voice harmonizes with the boys', is such a sing along moment, and lends the song a touch of softness and yearning. It's a shame their current tour doesn't have a live band to do the song justice, but they performed it with one at Sketchbook and it was pretty nice (linked below)! I also love the two alternate versions we got. Coming later with the FIGHT OR ESCAPE repackage, the Emocore Mix turns up the shred factor, giving the song more of a Linkin Park type of sound, but the real highlight to me is the one featuring rappers pH-1 and Woodie Gochild, which deconstructs the song and makes it even sadder and more desperate. On some days I think I like it even more than the original?
@boombazookajoe (8) says: “I'm not in love with every vocal moment on this, but this is definitely an epic anthem for them that ushured in an exciting sound change. Iconic chorus. Cute video.” Yeah, Taehyun is probably the most accomplished vocalist in the group, but it seems the stylistic choice here wasn't everyone's favorite. @drod93 (3,75) complains: “I liked it when I first came out, but the growling on the chorus is not for me”
Well I can't just ignore this commentary, and I guess it's my fault for demanding them for sub-4 scores, so here is @Vixen justification for ha (2): “So I really really tried to get into this one, especially since I love 'LO$ER=LO♡ER' so much...However, I just could not find myself to like even a single thing about this. In fact, if anything, the repeated listens (I swear I listened to this playlist like...14 times ddd) just made me hate it more and more than I initially did in the first place, and it was always just such a chore to get through right at the start of my listening party. Not only does it do nothing for me as a song, but it honestly just pissed me off at times dddd”
Growling Taehyun™ is responsible for, like, 9 of my 9.25 points. King ate, and then presumably something got stuck on the way down, but then he did his vocal take mid-Heimlich and we were all the better for it.
You know what, maybe we deserve the subpar year of boy group releases we are having, cause clearly good songs are not rewarded! What the hell you guys?
Anyway, I guess this is the least K-Pop song in the rate... It's performed fully in English, and Jackson is Chinese and didn't promote at all in Korea as a solo artist. But still, it deserves its spot here, since Jackson owes his career to GOT7! Jackson's solo trajectory has been pretty successful in the past couple years, he feels very at home in the popstar-with-creative-control role, directing all of his videos and running his own label, what the man lacks in vocal ability he certainly has in vision and charisma (and hotness).
This was... one of the most instant songs I've ever heard? On the first listen it already sounded like something that had been out for years and sung by crowds around the world, which is a good thing in my book. It certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel, but this particular wheel doesn't need it! I'm not gonna link any live performances of the song because they are... painful. Alas, most of the negative scores / commentary have one reason behind them. @drod93 (5) says “Wish someone else sang this” and @bbynewyear (6) agrees: “As usual, it's hard not to feel like his songs would hit harder with someone else singing them.“
Let me put these two next to each other for comedic effect:
@eatyourself (4,5) “I just don't understand how everyone thinks this is a good song. It sounds like the 2020 *d Sh**r*n's singles.”
Girl, if any of your GG faves released this it would be LAUDED on this forum!!11 This song also won a PJ Song Contest, which is difficult to get, not everybody has that.
