80s Top 10 Sales- Week By Week 1982-1983

Peaking at number 37 are Level 42 and "Micro kid" - another of my personal favourites from them. 31 years later and the lyrics seem more relevant now than ever:

"Mico kid speaks digitalk - if you here what he says - it's acceptable"

Already a top 20 hit in their native Canada and a top 3 smash Stateside, Men Without Hats finally also get a top 10 UK hit with "The Safety Dance". It was written by the lead singer Ivan Doroschuk after he was thrown out of a club for pogoing, it's taken from their debut album "Rhythm Of Youth" which is displayed on the T-shirt of the dwarf in the video.

Gezza76 - What was the sales figure for Men Without Hats' The Safety dance? s/b between 43k - 34k?

Thanks
I used to think Men Without Hats were German.....

It's a brilliant single...this and New Song would have been my personal top 2 if I'd been doing charts that early.

Culture Club continue to reign supreme in the album charts for a third week depriving Lionel Richie of a No 1 album with "Can't Slow Down" but it's all over on the singles front as "Karma Chameleon" slides 1-4 (75,000) but is now officially the biggest selling single of the 80s to date with sales of 1,205,000 so they will hardly be disappointed. Duran Duran's challenge however was in the end pretty non existent as "Union Of The Snake" rises 4-3 but sells an almost identical to last week 76,000.

The real challenge was between Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" and Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" with Joel leading for much of the week by a slim margin but Richie fought back thanks to TOTP and almost overhauled Joel at the death with just 2,000 copies separating the pair in the end 112,000 to 110,000. Joel's album "An Innocent Man" enters the top 20 for the first time in response to the single's success, the era is a major return to form for Joel whose US success had never really translated to these shores in the same way, but its arrival must be a disappointment for Richie who now plays second best on both charts here.

Adam Ant proves he's far from yesterday's pop star, his last single "Desperate But Not Serious" surprised many when it only made No 33 at the end of last year with some predicting his days in the limelight were over. He's roped in Phil Collins on the drums of his new single "Puss N Boots" and this week sees the response as the single progresses 21-9 (37,000), it's a typically theatrical affair from the dandy highwayman proving the adage that if it ain't broke.....parent album "Strip" is out in a fortnight.

UB40 are back and the hunt for a second chart topper, though it looks like it might be a tough call as "Please Don't Make Me Cry" only moves 12-10 (36,000) it is however the first time they have managed back to back top 10 hits since 1980 so that's something at least. Naturally as it comes from their album "Labour Of Love", it is a cover, this time of an old Winston Groovy track from 1970 which didn't do anything on the charts here but was obviously not overlooked by Reggae enthusiasts.

The other sole climber this week are Men Without Hats who rise 8-6 (47,000) but heading south are Tracey Ullman (3-5, 52,000), Howard Jones (5-7, 44,000) and Rocksteady Crew (6-8, 41,000)

Congrats to BIlly Joel then…pulling off his first UK number one. Poor Lionel Richie - runner up in both single and album category but it's not over for him in both singles and album chart…wait until 1984!

Great to see Adam Ant back with Phil Collins producing!

I loved UB40's version of "Please don't make me cry" - I'm becoming a middled-age soppy who love's all these 80's ballads!

W/e 5th Nov 1983 and peaking at number 17 are Will Powers and "Kissing with confidence"

Uncredited Carly Simon on vocals and a co-write form Stevie Winwood

I've learnt to kiss with confidence and no I don't have spinach on my teeth!

Peaking at number 20 is Elton John and "kiss the bride" - didn't he get married around this time to a woman?

Peaking at number 23 are Shalamar and "over and over" - is it for them? Where is Jody Watley and Jeff Daniel?

Peaking at number 95 are The Belle Stars and "The Entertainer"

Pop is a fickle business indeed. At the start of the year they had a massive top three hit and now can barely make it to the bottom of the chart. It's a shame as "The Entertainer" is a great song.

"Uptown Girl" only just defeated Lionel Richie last week but there's no competition this week as the track accelerates away from the rest of the field selling a cool 161,000 copies as parent album "Innocent Man" moves 20-12. All of which leaves Richie a distant second on a still respectable sale of 93,000 copies but does at least top the album charts this week with "Can't Slow Down" something that he never did with the Commodores.

1983 has been a quite year by normal Shakin' Stevens standards, his only single so far "It's Late" narrowly missed the top 10 but he's got a new album out later this month ("The Bop Don't Stop") and it will also feature his current single which has no problem in becoming his 9th top 10 single. "Cry Just A Little Bit" is written by Bob Heatlie who of course wrote Aneka's "Japanese Boy" which topped the charts back in 1981 and this week his new composition becomes Shaky's first top 5 hit in almost a year as it rockets 19-4 (57,000).

madbaggytrousers.jpg

Shaky has still some way to go to be the act with the most top 10 hits in the decade, Madness are the current leaders and are continuing to chalk up the hits, "The Sun And The Rain" becomes their 15th top 10 hit from 17 releases- an impressive tally by any acts standards. The single's cover incidentally is 'The Storm' by Narcisse Virgile Diaz De la Pena (in case you wondered), and the band have already announced that this will be a stand alone single (an increasing trend from them) but it seems their fans are still snapping up their every release as this flies 21-9 (42,000).

83_24.jpg

Formed all the way back in 1976 The Cure's initial releases failing to crack the charts in the late 70s with "A Forest" coming their first hit when it made No 31 back in 1980. Their last single "The Walk" was their first to hit the top 20 (a No 12 smash) but they go even better with "Love Cats" which leaps 12-10 (38,000) to become their biggest hit, it's taken from the album "Japanese Whispers" a kind of "Best Of" covering the last year of the band's life and is a nice recap for newer fans.

Elsewhere Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney are back with "Say Say Say" which returns to the top 10 moving 14-3 (72,000). It's full chart history so far is 25-10-13-14-3, the reason for its surprise about face? Well it now comes with a promo video which was heavily aired over the week including TOTP, unusual as it was dropping down the charts but it does the trick, McCartney's album "Pipes Of Peace" from which the track comes debuts at No 4 this week.

Adam Ant continues his revival jumping 9-5 (52,000) but losing ground are Duran Duran 3-6 (49,000) and Men Without Hats slip 6-7 (46,000) whilst Culture Club are down and out falling 4-8 (45,000).

W/e 12th Nov 1983 and the top ten's got all catty"

Number 5 Adam Ant's "Puss'n'Boots"
Number 10 The Cure's "Lovecats"

Where's EG's avatar when you need him?

I also thought it was a bit cheeky how TOTP managed to show a clip of the Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney "Say say say" video even though it was going down the chart last week Hmmmmm

Here!

Say Say Say's rebound was a strange one....you'd think EMI would have got the video finished and delivered to TV stations upon release, not 3 weeks later!

Some great records peaking outside the top ten w/e 12th Nov 1983:

Single number 3 from their "Synchronicity" album peaking at number 17 are The Police with the dark and sinister "Synchronicity II"

I've always loved the line:

"And every single meeting with his so-called superior is a humiliating kick in the crotch!"

I think Sting was filming his part in "Dune" at this stage - hence the Billy Idol look

Cool for cats? Good to see you've made it EG.
Spot on with your comment. If you can't finish the video on time, then delay the single's release until the video is complete (you can still release it for airplay though - and then watch it smash into the top ten on the back of plenty of airplay and with the video being ready to go!)
How much do you reckon EMI paid the TOTP team to play a clip of that video as part of their US segment?
Tsk Tsk - Isn't that what us "chart nerds" would call a school boy error?

Still with w/e 12th Nov 1983 and the next one is a real shocker!

Peaking at Number 18 are ABC and their first single in over a year after "The Lexicon of love"
The single's called "That was then but this is now"

I was so shocked when I first heard this single at the time - I just could not believe that it was ABC. I could just about recognise Martin Fry's vocals but the instrumentation was much harsher, abrasive with loud crashing drums and guitars screaming at the end!
What's happened to the gold lame suits? What's with the boiler suits?

But I love the line:
"Can't complain, mustn't grumble, help yourself to another piece of apple crumble"…don't mind if I do!
