80s Top 10 Sales- Week By Week- 1984-1985

I'll Fly For You is the sound of luxury. Parade tends to get overlooked in the scheme of things; it was certainly a success based on sales, but maybe because the singles tailed off chartwise, it's thought of as something of a flop.

15TH SEPTEMBER

Winning in emphatic style this week Stevie Wonder sold an incredible 257,000 copies last week to bring its first month tally to 634,000 as it sends out a clear warning to the domination of those Frankie records which currently sit in the top 2 positions for 1984 and for the decade though that might be getting slightly ahead of ourselves. The release of the soundtrack album this week might dampen the ardour of the track, however this week’s tally is not only the biggest 7 day sale of any track of 1984 (taking that accolade from “Two Tribes”) but also of the 1980s so far!.

George Michael easily holds the No 2 position though his sales are well down at 129,000, a figure which would normally impress, his tally of 828,000 would suggest that it is just a matter of time before the song sells a million, a feat that looks to be increasingly easy in the high sales climate of the last few months, indeed 1984 looks like it could be a bumper year for the million sellers.

With Chrissie Hynde on backing vocals “Pride (In The Name Of Love” is the first U2 single in 17 months and the first to be lifted from their forthcoming fourth album “The Unforgettable Fire” which is due next month. Their previous best came with 1983’s “New Year’s Day” which made No 10 but “Pride” goes instantly better smashing straight into the charts at No 8 on a sale of 34,000 spurred on by evocative lyrics about Martin Luther King Jnr. t's the 8th track of 1984 to debut inside the top 10.

If the Goombay Dance Band, Nicole, Kraftwerk and Nena have taught us anything it’s that German acts can produce No 1 singles and the newest German band to hit our charts are Alphaville who strike it rich with “Big In Japan” which this week moves 11-9 (33,000). The track comes with a promo directed by Yello’s Dieter Meier and has already topped the charts in their native land back in April this year.

Ray Parker Jr halves his position 6-3 but on just 53,000 sales he’s no challenge to the top 2 at present as Miami Sound Machine hold the No 7 for a third week but are now in a sales decrease to 40,000. Heading down are Black Lace 3-4 (50,000), Howard Jones 4-5 (42,000), Elton John 5-6 (42,000) and Laura Branigan 8-10 (32,000)

There are some really ace singles either just outside this top 10, or bubbling under, as I recall. Madam Butterfly, Tour De France, Mothers Talk, Sunset Now, Master & Servant....

w/e 8th Sep 1984 and some singles peaking outside the top ten:

At number 14 are Tears For Fears and "Mothers talk"
A very different sounding TFF record - a much harder, rock sound!

Peaking at number 17 are The Smiths and "William, it was really nothing" - is this song really about Billy Mackenzie?

Peaking at number 27 are Break Machine and hit number 3 "Are you ready?" - this was my favourite of theirs:

Peaking at number 33 is Michael Jackson and "Girl, you're so together" - Motown were milking the "Farewell my summer love" for all it's worth!

w/e 15th September 1984:

Peaking at number 13 is Malcolm McLaren and "Madam Butterfly" - I'd never heard anything like this back in 1984 - an absolutely haunting record covering so many different types of music in the space of a single:

Peaking at number 15 are Bucks Fizz and their cover of "Talking in your sleep" - I was quite shocked at the time when this missed the top ten!

Another shock for me at the time was Heaven 17 and "Sunset now" which only peaked at number 24 this week in 1984:

Peaking at number 26 is the second single from their album "Victory" - here's The Jacksons and "Torture":

Peaking at number 34 are Aztec Camera and "All I need is everything"

Roddy Frame seemed like he was trying out a number of things at this stage in his career:
Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits on production duties
A slow-downed cover of Van Halen's "Jump" on the b-side

All very interesting stuff from a 20 year old!
