A Kiwi Versus Rate: Kimbra | Ladyhawke | Broods | The Naked And Famous | Bic Runga [DONE]

THE WHY

It was at some point in Q1 2020 that I realised I stan at least 3 artists that I'd love to see rates for in the near future. Those were Ladyhawke, Broods, and Kimbra. Naturally, running three separate rates, one after another, seemed quite daunting and time consuming. But there was something the acts had in common, something that made them feel like perfect material for a versus rate: they made PJ-friendly quirky pop music and they never reached the heights of popularity their compatriot Lorde has been enjoying.

The international breakout of Ms Yelich-O'Connor was also followed by what felt like opening of the floodgates for new talented Aotearoa-hailing alt pop acts. I did consider including an Extras section dedicated to the Chelseas Jades™ but it quickly ballooned up to an impossible volume and I came to the conclusion that a separate section of artist spotlights will have to do instead.

In turn, I looked to massive Kiwi successes that predated the rise of Lorde to supplement the singles + album tracks of choice I had settled on for the main three acts. The Naked And Famous as well as Bic Runga were no-brainers, then. Both were artists I had little previous familiarity with and I'm still not done with getting into them. That's why they're represented with some of their most notable singles and promo tracks - I felt the rate would lose out on omitting them but, being a new listener, I could not quite take up extending their sections to the full twenty, the way I had been able to with the more familiar main artists.

THE WHAT TO DO

1. Please rate all the songs on the usual scale 0-10. One 11 is permitted for your ultimate fave.
2. Commentary is most certainly welcome but not obligatory.
3. I know it's the vacation season, so I'll keep the voting open until
September 23rd.
Imma be real with y'all - I'm trying to settle into corporation hell and I'll probably only have time to bump the thread up on weekends. I'm hoping that by the end of September I'll be in a place to get into the routine of dropping an elimination per day. Don't worry, though - it is getting finished!
4. The obligatory trolling disclaimer: It's likely to be a rather... niche rate, so I'm going to be watching out for shady scores like a hawk. That don't mean I'm going to be on your case for any score below 5. Just be mindful of your ballot likely having a huge impact on the leaderboard and don't get too extra with the 0-2 end of the scale, please.
5. Oh, and here's the playlist:

By the way @Phonetics Girl did you consider including Mixed Emotions? Since it's Ladyhawke's most recent single and all.
If I liked Mixed Emotions better, I'd probably have found a way to include it by extending each act's selection by one addtional song but honestly I wasn't that crazy about making changes to the song list that late in the game (pretty much closed it after Guilty Love came out and was scared she'd drop the album before I got to open the rate, which would throw the whole proportional distribution of songs between the three 3-album sections to hell! Yeah...I just have a lot of feelings.)

---

Taking a moment to appreciate the non-Spotify version of Miracle cause it needs emphasis, we can choose to rate the one we prefer:

A 10/10!

Do one of these rates for 80s/90s NZ artists (e.g. Sharon O'Neill, Jenny Morris, Margaret Urlich, Shona Laing) and I may be interested.

On a side note, I lived in NZ for a short period as a child... in a town in the north of the North Island, where our backyard had a cabbage patch, a grape vine, and a whole bunch of exotic fruits (we'd discover new things growing all the time) like feijoas (which are quite popular in NZ compared to Australia) and uglifruit.
