"I remember being up at two in the morning playing with a main key line, the next day I showed it to Thom and we made a demo. I spent the rest of the day watching Skins and I got inspired by that rebellious spirit. Everything is so romanticised and exaggerated on that show. It makes you wish you had a teenage life like that. So I wrote lyrics that inspired dreaming and youthful exuberance."
Released summer 2010 as the second single leading into TNAF's debut album, "Young Blood" is undoubtedly the hit of the rate. Soundtracked countless TV shows and commercials. APRA Silver Scroll 2010 for best-written song. Covered by everyone from Jessie J to Birdy. Frankly, I don't think I've heard the whole song until last year.
So after the Great Peach Controversy this was looking like a runaway winner and I was making a surprised pikachu face. I guess I was just blindsided by my shortsightedness of including such a behemoth and not expecting that its status would make it make sense as a likely rate winner. It was the eleventh hour ballot from @Cutlery that turned the tables and granted my 11 the path to victory, which was an amazing twist to witness. K, think I've said enough, better get running!

"That track I wrote all about sort of being alone. I wrote it when I first moved to London and I didn’t really know anyone. It was like a fantasy, imagining that you actually had someone you could talk to, which I didn’t."
I can play and hide behind grand concepts but the rationale behind this rate was to give my 11 to "Magic", simple as that. And now it happens to be the winner of the whole rate, which I bet nobody, including me, saw coming. Can you say legenddddd?
The fact that Pip/her label waited til a whole year passed to release it as the last single from her debut (September 2008 to September 2009)..................................... would I have ever even discovered Ladyhawke, had it not been for this timing? Now, if you indulge my nostalgia for a second, going back to early 2010, the success of Florence and the emergence of the whole Quirky Pop Girl phenomena, I was determined to find some more of this indie-type music and get into it. "Magic" was one of the first songs I stumbled upon on youtube and holy shit! Just.HOLY.SHIT. I don't think I can describe in words the new worlds that opened up to me when I heard that instrumental for the first time. The very first CD I burnt had "Magic" on it. To verify this claim, I pulled out an old hardcover I used to document my playlists in, and damn, the tracklist is pretty killer - "You've Got The Love" and "Rabbit Heart", "Under The Sheets", "I Predict A Riot", "Foundations", "Once", "L.E.S Artistes", "Trouble Is A Friend" and "Incomplete Lullaby" by Lisa Mitchell. What? I said I'd be indulgent!
To close this out, "Magic" still sounds as fresh and electrifying as ever. It remains one of my absolute favourites from the 2000s and I'm delighted to have created an opportunity for it to become a rate winner. My mind!

9 - If you take out the whistling elements the opening reminds me of "Pumpin Blood" by Nonono for some reason. This is pretty much the same calibre of an indie anthem that was, though I'm not in love when the song slows down.
10 - Their masterpiece as far as I am concerned!
6 - The riffs are so good, and the lyrics can be shouted along to, but the entire arena sound of pretty much everything else, is just really unappealing and cheapens the music for me.
I think I always knew this was going to be my 11. It’s a complete bop from beginning to end. I’ve loved the song for years and still get goose bumps when it comes on

10 - Ever since the Quirky Pop rate I just can't stop listening to this. I always compare songs with the same title especially if the song I knew first has a special place in my heart (which creates a high bar for the new song to subconsciously match) and that is Sophie Ellis-Bector's "Magic" from my favorite album of hers Make a Scene. Not only does it compare well but even being more of an indie rock song it still manages to create the same vibe I get from the Sophie song and parent album. The "over the Atlantic" lines pops the fuck off as well with its catchiness.
10 - Yet another perfect track from my Queen <3333
10 - It smashes! Let’s hear it clap with the sound of getting attached quick and easy.
