AALIYAH Singles Rate [WINNER REVEALED!]

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 5 REVEALS - #4!]

It's a great track, but I'm happy it didn't win. I agree it's her most 'pop' song. It wouldn't have felt like a representative winner.

I'm rooting for 'Are You That Somebody?'.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 5 REVEALS - #4!]

Not happy about 'More Than a Woman', but not too surprised, either.

Anyway, as long as 'Try Again' doesn't win, I'm good. I can't be the only one who dislikes it, can I?

Let's do one now and then have the final tomorrow, shall we?

3. We Need a Resolution

Average: 9.29

[Highest score: 10 {x10} (Mark B, theincredibleflipper, 3Xs, funplex, Mikl C, ladygagaogaga, Jwentz, Totto, Aester, invertedbutterfly), Lowest score: 7 (CorgiCorgiCorgi)]

Our third favourite Aaliyah single is the first lifted from Aaliyah, which made #20 in the UK and a disappointing #59 in the US. And it's electric. Wikipedia informs me that we're not alone in our love, as "In October 2011, NME placed it at number 119 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years". It was placed 21st on Slant Magazine's "Best of the Aughts: Singles" list and 30th on Stylus Magazine's "Top 50 Singles: 2000-2005." The single was also ranked 8th on Slant Magazine's Best Singles of 2001 list".

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 5 REVEALS - #3!]

I didn't expect Are You That Somebody to make it as far as it did, I'm so happy! I hope it takes the top spot now. Try Again is worthy of placing in the top 3.

Kinda funny that the last 2 singles are both from soundtracks.

Let's wrap this up. Our runner up, ladies and gentlemen...

2. Try Again

Average: 9.31

[Highest score: 10 {x13} (P'NutButter, MarkB, theincredibleflipper, CorgiCorgiCorgi, 3Xs, vikeyeol, SophiaSophia, Fluorocarbon, 2014, Mikl C, ladygagaogaga, Totto, invertedbutterfly), Lowest score: 4.5 (iheartpoptarts)]

Oh dear, iheartpoptarts does it again! The lead single from Aaliyah's movie debut, Romeo Must Die, made #5 in the UK and #1 in the US. I've kind of run out of superlatives at the business end of this rate, so again I'll take my lead from Wikipedia: ""Try Again" was featured on Billboard's Hot 100 Songs of the Decade list at number ninety-eight, while appearing at number eighty-six on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 Best Songs of the Decade. On January 31, 2005, Pitchfork Media ranked the song number thirty-seven on its list of the Top 100 Singles of 2000-04. Complex Magazine ranked the single 43rd on its list of the 100 Best Songs of the 2000s, while it finished 60th on Slant Magazine's Best of the Aughts: Singles list. In September 2011, VH1 included "Try Again" in their list of 100 Greatest Songs of the '00s, placing it at number 65".

And our winner, from the soundtrack to Dr Dolittle, made #11 in the UK and #21 in the US (though was another R&B #1 there). Wikipedia says "The song was listed 387th on The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born, a list of songs compiled by Blender magazine. It was also ranked 18th on Spin magazine's Top 20 Singles of the 90's, and 5th on The Village Voice's 1998 Pazz & Jop critics' poll. Pitchfork Media included the song at number 8 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s. This song earned Aaliyah a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance".

Thank you all for reading - I hope this has reminded everyone how amazing Aaliyah really was.

I've not really commented but it's been great to read amazing top 10 in general I would have liked Try Again to win (that 4.5 is sacrilege) but I'm happy enough with Are You That Somebody?.

Thanks for hosting a great rate, invertedbutterfly.

Glad Are You That Somebody won but Try Again was done wrong with that low score! Would it have won otherwise?

iheartpoptarts would have needed to score Try Again an '8' for it to tie, any more than that it would have won.

But yes, if we disregard his scores for both, Try Again would have won (with 9.55 versus 9.53 for Are You That Somebody). Just. Mind you, as he was the lowest scorer for quite a lot of the songs here, if we disregarded all his scores, I think quite a bit would change.

You mean I could've kept it from winning with a 7.5 and avoided all this backlash?

Just kidding. I honestly didn't think my scores would have that much of an impact! Admittedly, this is the first singles rate I've participated in, and I didn't realize that "Rate the songs from 0-10" actually meant "Rate the songs from 6 and up because it's Aaliyah and she's awesome." Which she is, but I really do like some of her singles a lot more than others.

And I don't like 'Try Again.' Like, at all. (As if I need to say that now, but anyways.) It's very repetitive melodically, which really hurts the song for me to the point where I almost find it annoying. The 4.5 was pretty much me thinking, "I can't stand this one, but I'll give it a slightly below average score (surely, on a 0-10 scale, 5 is average... or so I thought at the time) because it's objectively not shit."

On a more positive note, 'Are You That Somebody' is the first Aaliyah song I ever really loved, and although it's not my personal number one ('Back & Forth', 'More Than a Woman', and 'We Need a Resolution' are all bigger favorites of mine), I think it's definitely a deserving winner.

...And I'm going to go hide now. Thanks for an amazing rate, and apologies if I messed things up for anyone!

Please don't apologise (I'm guessing you're joking, but still)! I think everyone rates these things differently - I for one rarely dislike songs by artists I like, so I rarely give out anything less that a '5' in these things, but I know other people rate the songs against each other (so their favourites get 10s and their least get 0s), and... Well, there's near enough infinite variation.

I think it's just surprising that someone could like a song so much less than everyone else, but that's so not surprising if you think about it.

I think we're all just teasing you anyway - thanks for participating! It certainly made the rate more interesting!

"Try Again" is too repetitive for me, too. I still think it's pretty good (I gave it a 7), but know that you're not alone in not loving it, iheartpoptarts. I'm glad "Are You That Somebody?" won. It's an all-time classic.

'Are You That Somebody?' is definitely a worthy winner. I gave it a 9.5 because I didn't think it quite deserved a 10 but it's still one of my favorites. A bonafide classic as well. Thanks for hosting this invertedbutterfly!
