AALIYAH Singles Rate [WINNER REVEALED!]

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #7!]

I've always had a soft spot for "Don't Know What To Tell Ya." It's far and away my favorite of the "I Care 4 U" exclusives, I remember playing it over and over when that album first came out.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #7!]

Ooh, I'll play...

6. Try Again
5. Rock the Boat
4. Are You That Somebody
3. If Your Girl Only Knew
2. We Need a Resolution
1. More Than a Woman

I'd be happy to see any of my top 4 win, though.

One of the surprise successes of this rate takes its leave of us now:

7. Don't Know What to Tell Ya

Average: 8.43

[Highest score: 10 {x3} (theincredibleflipper, Mikl C, ladygagaogaga), Lowest score: 6 (vikeyeol)]

Recorded by Aaliyah and Timbaland for 'Aaliyah', but left off that album, this was resurrected for 'I Care 4 U', becoming the lead single in the UK, where it peaked at #22. I do understand why people are a bit unimpressed that this has done so well - it certainly isn't better than One in a Million or Back and Forth - but I do unabashedly love it, it's certainly my favourite of the previously unreleased tracks on 'I Care 4 U' (only Erica Kane comes close for me).

I love Erica Kane.

My top 6

6- If Your Girl Only Knew
5- Rock The Boat
4- We Need A Resolution
3- More Than A Woman
2- Try Again
1- Are You That Somebody

Aaliyah_-_Rock_the_Boat.jpg

The second single from Aaliyah made #12 in the UK and #14 in the US in early 2002. I think it's great, but it had quite a few average-ish scores, so it obviously doesn't do it for everybody.

ladygagaogaga is pretty blunt: "I don't hate this song because it killed her, I just hate it. I actually enjoyed a remix of this. I think I just think it sticks out like a sore thumb on Aaliyah with its island vibes and its always annoyed me. Aaliyah is a dark album and should have had no time for these sunshiney sex jams".

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #6!]

I wish I had taken part in this rate but I saw it too late. I have such mixed feelings towards Rock The Boat, I adore the song but ultimately she did die after shooting the video for it so I am always very sad when I listen to it. Why did they have to fly to Bahamas for a couple of shots anyway, why didn't they just do it in Florida?

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #6!]

Such a gorgeous track, honestly one of the tracks I'll always list as a 'best ever' from any artist. That last shot of it's video is also heartbreaking and beautiful.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #6!]

Rock The Boat is really bittersweet, she was so beautiful in that video and looked like a true superstar. It's her best non-Timbaland track.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #6!]

My main issue with Rock the Boat is actually that it's just boring. Its single release is so puzzling

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #6!]

Le sigh. "Rock the Boat" is one of the best-produced songs of all time IMO, that instrumental is absolute fire. It only started sounding current very recently with the rise of alt-R&B. It and "Loose Rap" are my very favorite Aaliyah songs.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 10 REVEALS - #6!]

Can I just say what an amazing top 5 this is? I'd switch out 'Try Again' for 'Back & Forth', but other than that, it's pretty much exactly what I would've picked.

The lead single from her sophomore album, If Your Girl Only Knew made #11 (and #1 R&B) in the US and #21 in the UK, repeaking in the latter at #15 when it was reissued later in the album's campaign. And it's unspeakably amazing, and possibly my favourite Aaliyah single, and I'd be sad to see it out if not for the fact that the One in a Million singles have underperformed so much in this rate, so I kinda feel glad it's done as well as it has.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 5 REVEALS - #5!]

I agree! At this point the all deserve to win, but I hope it's Are You That Somebody.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 5 REVEALS - #5!]

Awww, I'm so proud of 'If Your Girl Only Knew'!

I am rooting for 'Try Again', but I think 'More Than A Woman' will win.

Aaliyah's only UK #1 (it reached a perhaps disappointing #25 in the US) was the third (second in the UK) single from Aaliyah, was the only time in UK chart history (to that point - I haven't checked if it's been repeated since) that a dead artist replaced another dead artist at #1 (this song was followed by George Harrison's My Sweet Lord). It's very good, but I had to knock off half a mark because it just feels slightly... Cheesy is too strong, but there's something about it that just isn't as cool as Aaliyah's very best.

There is something really eerie about the production on it. Glorious.

Re: AALIYAH Singles Rate [TOP 5 REVEALS - #4!]

I adore 'More Than A Woman', It is arguably her most 'pop' sounding single isn't it?

But what a top 3!!

3. We Need A Resolution
2. Are You That Somebody
1. Try Again
