Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

Since it is the greatest song of all time, it'd be such a shame if The Winner Takes It All isn't number one.

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

Thanks Hudweiser for doing this thankfully I saved my scores from last time but I shall have another few listens just in case my opinion has changed since then.

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

'Under Attack' and 'Dancing Queen' should still be in!

I can see at least three 10s I'll be awarding.

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

Yes! I gave no less than four 10's, all truly deserved.
The only song I don't like out of that bunch is Gimme Gimme Gimme.

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

Wow, I need to change my votes up a little bit, when I originally voted I gave eight of the final ten songs a 10!

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

Scores entered.

Slightly re-jigged to make up for less entries. Only one 10 now and some have gone down to as low as 5 relative to what's left.

Surely there can only be one winner.

Nice slew of votes came in today, so we're finally getting some movement!

Much as I think it's a great song, I'm rooting for One Of Us!

Mind you, I gave 5 of these 10/10 so as long as one of them wins...

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10 - VOTING CLOSES TODAY!

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: The Final 10

Well, here we go...

I'm going to pedal quite quick through this countdown as A). we've been waiting a long time and B). I'm off to FrightFest on Thursday, so 10-6 today and 5-1 tomorrow.

10: WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE

Average: 7.41
Highest: 3 lots of 10 (bichard, mumty, hudweiser)
Lowest: 2 (imaduck)

"There's no hurry anymore when all is said and done."

A.K.A. the lost hit single.

As Benny and Frida divorced in early 1981, so Bjorn penned this pseudo-twin to The Winner Takes it All, in which Frida delivers a stunning vocal about the amicable split.

The video was shot in the Spring of '81 and was pencilled in as the first single from the upcoming album. However, ultra-picky Benny and Bjorn weren't pleased with the mix and held back, stuck out Lay All Your Love On Me as a 'holding pattern' single in July and when the time came to start the new campaign, Frida had drastically cut off all her hair, thus rendering the prospect of a 1982 release moot.

However, to see how that panned out, look for the Spanish version of the video, where she appears with both hairstyles in different shots!

It was however released in the US after One of Us stalled just shy of the Hot 100, reaching a respectable No. 27 there, and a far less impressive No. 77 in Australia, the land they once ruled.

My score: 10 A beautiful record, my second-favourite of theirs ever and something that should've been released at the time of their revival in the 90s rather than the also-rans from Gold. Frida hits it out of the park and the melody is one of their last and greatest.

Re: ABBA Singles Rate Pick-Up: #10

Who gave When All Is Said and Done a two?!!! Philistine!!!

I love this song, and it's an absolute travesty that it wasn't released as a single, lead-in or otherwise. It's clearly a stand out track on the phenomenal parent album, and a one-two punch of One of Us then this (much as I love Head Over Heels) would have maintained their chart prowess for a bit longer. Along with If It Wasn't For The Nights and Hole In Your Soul, I'd say it's their greatest wasted single!

9: ONE OF US

Average:
7.75
Highest: 4 x 10 (idratherjack, hudweiser, Conan, bichard)
Lowest: 2 (imaduck)

"Staring at the ceiling, wishing she was somewhere else instead."

The group's final global hit, One of Us was the most obvious hit from The Visitors and landed nicely in the Top 3 at the end of 1981. An ongoing rumour insists it was their 10th number one single, thwarted by the fact that there was no New Year's chart and so all singles were effectively non-movers for that week.

Nevertheless, it gave them their 13th and final Irish number one and remains something of a timeless classic to this day, with gentile reggae inspirations and a perfect, if too short, string instrumental before the final chorus.

My score: 10
Always loved it, always will. Agnetha's vocal is on point, again, the melody of glorious in spite of the downbeat lyrical content. Bjorn once said some of the best work came after the divorces and this, as well as When All is Said and Done from the same album, is proof of that.

Possibly me, I don't remember, but score was definitely low. (Everything is scaled around the 10)
