I think it'll be a re-recording. They were going to tack it on to the end of the Voulez-Vous deluxe but changed their minds on it at the 11th hour "for unknown reasons", but knowing how picky B&B are, I bet they took the chance to re-do it from scratch.

Would happily be wrong though.

I’d say (and hope) a complete re-recording. Wouldn’t seem right to include any elements of a 1978 demo on an album otherwise recorded from 2017 to 2021.

The original version was slated for inclusion in full on the 1994 “Thank You For The Music” boxset, plus the much later Voulez-Vous deluxe. Its exclusion was apparently because the existing recording proved “unmixable” and at the time there were no plans for ABBA to get back together and re-record it, so it only became part of the ABBA Undeleted medley.

By all accounts, Benny and Björn always liked the song but it didn’t fit in with the disco feel of Voulez-Vous. Its inclusion now is because of their genuine affection for it, and presumably because Voyage has proved a more suitable home. I don’t think (as were my first thoughts) that it’s merely to make up the numbers. The fact it’s going to be a pre-release single would support that.

Their feelings about Just A Notion are certainly a contrast with those for their other “Just” song (yes, that one). Great chorus but verses that don’t match it. Although we don’t have a professional recording, it’s hard to disagree. The verses of that song are very weak in my opinion, and too long.

a mixed of old and new vocals but mostly old from what I heard. The chorus is definitely old vocals but some of the adlibs are new. Agnetha voice during the chorus gives me life!!! I never heard the demo but the final mix sounds a lot like Why did it have to be me and Waterloo.

Just a quick question - if you’ve not heard the original demo, how could you tell there are old vocals on the new version?

Totally appreciate the information and appreciate the position you’re in, but yeh…if you post stuff anywhere online, it will spread. It’s out there in the public domain.

I'm very intrigued with the idea that Just A Notion uses 43 year old vocals, whilst every other song on the album uses recent vocals. I'm not opposed to it, but I'm very surprised by this choice.

Screenshot-ing the post with username etc is going a bit far and not necessary, though even if it was a private forum it wouldn’t stop anyone passing the news on to interested parties.

The news has now appeared on a release schedule for next Friday anyway.
