AcceleRATE: Biggest Pop Girls of 2018

I’m not surprised at all the users who are calling for Liberation to lose songs, they all stan artists who have a 1/4 of an octave and think anyone who sings higher than three notes are too “vocally intense and showboaty” for them.

I mean: I don't like showboaty vocals that much, which is one reason Liberation is such a good record. Christina displays so much vocal restraint and nuance.

I get why somebody wouldn't find Liberation fun to listen to and prefer a funner album, but I don't understand the A Star Is Born stanning/Liberation bashing combo. They're both somewhat conservative records that get adult contemporaryish at times, but Liberation is hell of a lot better at being the serious artistic cred album. It's often sonically adventurous whereas even the melodies in ASIB sound ripped off from somewhere. I know it's a soundtrack, but I'm glad its artistic laziness is not being rewarded in this rate.

What do people genuinely see in Dua beyond New Rules? I’ve never seen someone get so many free passes for being so dull.

One Kiss blocking No Tears Left To Cry from #1 in the UK was one of the biggest injustices of last year and I live in a country that actually got No Tears to #1.

I see the appeal. Strong distinctive voice, a cool-and-edgy-without-being-try hard image. And I think New Rules and Hotter Than Hell are easy 10s. But yeah, I thought her album was bland and the stanning is dissprortionate to the output.

That being said, when people are willing to stan Lauren from 5th Harmony, who doesn't even have one good song, you can see why Dua, with a few great bops, is getting so much hype. She benefits from having peers who are doing less. And people like rooting for an up and comer.

One Kiss is terrible tho and y'all should feel bad for letting it get so far.

Let’s not pretend that Dua Lipa’s album isn’t good. She can’t perform it for shit and in general I’m sick to death of it at this point, but I stand by that it was a surprisingly well made album when it came out.

The album is well made, but I thought it was boring and one note, not unlike Camila's album (though I do understand that Dua's has a cooler sound)

I'm getting harder to please these days tho.

Alright, for real, I think it’s time to admit those three sell out pop songs from ASIB aren’t good even in an ironic way.

Honestly y'all can trash everything on the soundtrack but my love for Hair Body Face won't falter.

My controversial opinion is that the actual film is absolutely lackluster and I'm praying there will never be another remake of it. It's kind of hard to top the Judy Garland version to be honest. I think Gaga did a good job but I'm just over it.

Potentially controversial statement - New Rules is one of her weaker singles. I'm shocked that was her breakout song, and not one of the vastly-superior tracks on her debut:

That doesn't make New Rules a bad song, though. If we were rating it today I'd give it a solid 7. Maybe a 6.5 if I was feeling sassy.

I can see why people don't care for her. Her live performances aren't exactly mindblowing, and her throaty vocals are definitely a love-it-or-hate-it thing. But, her music is catchy and well-produced, and I like her voice.

I think if she can develop a more consistent style with her next few albums, and maybe take a few risks, she'll finally live up to the potential. But I can see why it'd be hard to do that with your debut. Not everyone can do that.

I'm kind of neutral towards Dua, but I did see her at Osheaga last summer and I have to admit she put on a good show and had pretty strong stage presence.

New Rules is like a 7.5 but the video was an 11 which is why it was her breakout moment. It’s absolutely wild (but deserved) that clips of the video going viral on twitter is what led to her current run of success.

SCORE: 6.802

Highest Scores:
10 x 2 (@CorgiCorgiCorgi, @CasuallyCrazed), 9.5 x 1 (@R27), 9 x 9 (@nikkysan, @soratami, @boombazookajoe, @GimmeWork, @ufint, @johnny_tsunami, @Remorque, @Cutlery, @Jersey)
Lowest Scores: 3 x 3 (@MrMannacroix, @Beautiful Child 2, @Laurence), 4 x 2 (@Mirwais Ahmadzaï, @playboy69)

The amount of times I accidentally typed someone's score as 10 because I was looking at this fucking title, I swear. Clearly I caught myself, given the amount of 10s it actually wound up with.

This track brims with energy and works as both an album opener and an insight into Cardi's incredible story. The urgency is palpable, she sounds hungry. It's a treat to hear. But the problems lie in Cardi's flow - it ain't great, girls - and the cliches that weigh the lyrics down. It's fine, but she's done better.

R27, however, finds it to be "a great opener. Cardi is spitting bars like her life depends on it. The track also helps add some pathos and depth to the themes of money and success which Cardi frequently returns to throughout her solo material and features." happiestgirl is not so sold. "I guess this makes a good album opener." evilsin praises it as "so sinister and aggressive," must be an RJF stan too then sis? Speaking of, "We love an origin story that’s well scripted and well acted," he says. The Favorite, in theaters now.

"Takes a while to get going doesn't it?" whispers Solenciennes into constantino's ear. Our resident Cypriot nods gravely. "It takes a while to get going, but it knocks after the beat drop eventually happens." On the topic of said drop, Mirwais, a low scorer, says it sounds like "Cardi found this instrumental on someone named DJBigFatBeat’s YouTube page." I mean...not off-base, honestly. Trouble in Paradise clicks and hollers, "Such a genius introduction for her debut. Also 'got enough bras to support me' is incredible."

"A banger," is Raichu calls it. "Wisely sticks to the hip hop album-making principle of opening with a track that goes hard and showcases her bars." johnny_tsunami says "We love an autobiographical bop," so maybe that explains who here has latched onto Sweet But Psycho. "Go off, Cardi," sways Babyface, calling this "Her own ‘All Things Go’.

Subwaykid shriek-laughs "Get Up 10 Gets a 6" and we're going to move right on to Lost In Japan. stanning the honesty of it all. "Cardi following through on her threat to put a Louboutin where her neck at is still one of my favourite things in 2018. Those photos were ART."

And...that's it. That's what all 102 of you Dalmatians had to say about this track.

But that's okay...I think you'll have plenty to say about the next elimination.
