Ace of Base

What a nostalgic feeling to see the .com get an update. We used to be sent reeling everytime this happened prior to 2010. (I'd usually begin scrambling to update The Hallo Boards with whatever colours or typefaces the new era was headed in... oh to have that kind of spare time again!! haha)

Just curious if anyone has heard any of the new remixes on the new box?

I am still a bit undecided about this new box but if the new remixes are truly worth the purchase then I will get it.

Finally, after 25 years, the photoshoot for the original, unreleased "Life is a Flower" video has surfaced to coincide with its 25th anniversary. These are to be included in the upcoming singles boxset!

Wow. What was the plan for the video?

It’s strange seeing these new pictures and then looking at what the artwork turned out to be for the “Flowers” album.

I get that Linn wanted to be more in the background but I wonder whose idea it was to suggest blurring her face in the first place?

I’d love to see more pictures from this photoshoot, especially a group shot. They all look great.

I think Linn was hardly present during the "Flowers" photo shoot. Below you can see many photos where they have photoshopped her in the background. I assume it was her own idea to make her face blurry.

I wonder what they have in store for their anniversary. When is that big day they talk about on their website? In a perfect world, they would get together one more time for a comeback, including Linn. But yeah. We all know the latter won't happen...

The 30th anniversaries of their formation, first single and first album have all passed now.

The singles boxset will now be out 30 years to the week since the UK release of All That She Wants!

I guess they could be talking about the release of Happy Nation U.S. Album/The Sign in September 1993 - if they're building towards any specific date at all.

According to Claes Cornelius (former Mega Records A&R):

The original video of Life Is A Flower depicted the 4 Aces as directors at the Ace of Base Group of Companies. It was filmed mostly in grey-ish/sephia colors and took place in dark office-like environments. Produced by a leading Stockholm-based advertisement company called Paradiset, the video costed Mega Records over 1 million SEK.

A rough edit version was sent to the label for approval, but it was deemed too dark for what Ace of Base and the song represented. This version was ditched before completion and led to the creation of the video directed by Maurice Hawkesworth and Jenny, which was improvised in a few hours.

Part of the original video can be seen at the end of the released version, which shows close-up shots of the Aces in black and white.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the website launches on the release date of the new box collection. All I’m expecting is probably videos/ or an interview with Jonas and Ulf discussing the new box - similar to those videos for when Hidden Gems came out which would be nice.

As someone who was always more into Ace of Base's singles and remixes rather than albums proper, the news of this boxset has me tingling. I doubt I'll be able to afford it without Afterpay but whatever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...so I just had a quick look at the tracklisting on Amazon and why in god's name is the full Frankie Knuckles mix of Lucky Love not included?! Hoping that it's there and that was an oversight in the pre-release track list because...????????????

I'm assuming it was cut to have everything else fit on one disc (the British Nites remix alone is 11+ minutes). I've had a quick look at the track list and it seems like it's the same case with the Humpty Vission Lorimer Anthem remix of Beautiful Life and the Hartmann & Langhoff Club Mix of Cruel Summer. All full length remixes are available on the Classic Collection (with the Lucky Love and Cruel Summer mixes being on streaming too), thankfully.

We had so many 'posh office' pop videos back then, so I get why they wanted one. Shame it didn't work.

I will buy the singles boxset if it comes down in price. The albums boxset was a no brainer for me, and still much cheaper.

Jenny on Channel 5 last night

Thanks Ben! It's novel hearing Jenny talk about the shoot, just sittin' in the window all day. Everything she says about the delight in "looking back" through her performances, you can hear it in her voice when she reminisces. I love it.

It's also interesting to hear the "timelessness" of its visuals was intentional, though a part of me always wondered what it would've been like if Clive/Arista had the time and opportunity to quickly gather a "US Version" of the video. I'm sure it would've been rather predictable...

Someone may have already replied to this, but I recall in the Teenage Heaven official forum Claes describing her "blurry era" as a collaboration between herself and the photographer. There was going to be no mistaking her decision to "step back", but as we all know it unfortunately drew more attention to her.

There was a brief CNN clip about the band returning to the Billboard top 10 with Cruel Summer. The voiceover highlighted her "noticeably quiet" nature in the interview when they went to NYC and pointed out her positioning on the album cover. [ http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Music/9809/03/ace.of.base/index.html ]

I think all of this attention was probably acknowledged by her return "in focus" on the SOTN/GH era photos (I'm so grateful for those group shots).
