Agnes - Magic Still Exists

On first listen, yeah, nothing really stood out, except the singles and the closing track, which feels like an extremely strong chorus struggling to escape the overlong intro and sloggy piano-led production. Entering the next replay with lowered expectations. I immediately feel it would've worked better as a companion EP to "Nothing Can Compare", which was a much stronger statement of intent.

Don't kill my vibe... Like... Literally.

Wouldn't call it bad, more like "nothing can match the stellar three singles" i.e. pretty much every album on planet Earth. I'm frustrated because with a few extra touches "Magic Still Exists" would've been the best track on the record. "XX" is a very meandering affirmation of womanhood, "Love and Appreciation" is a competent disco pastiche, and "Selfmade" is this "experimental" bop about... success, I guess? It's all very "corporation turns logo into rainbow colors during Pride Month" somehow, with vague platitudes about freeing your mind and body repeated throughout, living in a gay bop utopia, but comes off a bit hollow. I think it would've worked brilliantly with a video album, to flesh out the concept a bit more, as it doesn't stand well enough on its own. I'll take the four great tracks and run.

I just noticed the album's tracklist was edited from the original 12 track arrangement, and I don't find Still Seems Far or Set Free Your Mind anywhere.
The album is okay. The singles are spectacular and the album tracks are not bad, but are way less memorable. I didn't like the interludes and the intro. Surprisingly, maybe my least favourite song was the title track - or maybe it's a grower. And I wanted to hear the song she previewed a while ago with lyrics "all in my head, in my head / all in my head, in my head", but it didn't make it. Maybe it's the Set Free Your Mind song that ended up being cut.
