Although I understand the niche argument, trying to turn Alesha Dixon into the UK's next soul sensation will not work - her voice is not good enough.

That isn't the aim either.

She will be marketed as a mainstream pop act and I'm sure her music will reflect that.

Alesha was never initial an MC, and it was never her long term goal. Mis-Teeq were launched as an R&B girl group, but when the original version of 'Why?' flopped, it got a garage remix and Alesha happened to be able to MC, so it stuck for the next few singles.

But keep in mind, Mis-Teeq's biggest single and the only one to impact the US was 'Scandalous' which featured Alesha singing, with no MCing at all.

I'd say that her contribution to Scandalous, although not stricly MCing, was hardly traditional singing either.

I still don't think she's got enough ooomph to simply join the 'mainstream pop act' field without finding it very tough. I don't want her to release a slew of rap/MC filled rubbish, but I think it would be stupid to ignore this completely.

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

Alesha is great in a girlband, but she won't make it solo.

Not only is her singing voice a bit below par, but in interviews she always seems a bit, I dunno... bleurgh.. a bit daft, a little bit annoying, definitely not somebody that could be deemed aspirational, a la Beyonce.

I used to think she was quite beautiful to look at, but there's something faintly unappealing about her.

Having said all that, I do kinda like her. And she can dance and MC well.

Poor old Pinhead.

See I disagree with this as well. I think she "gives very good interview". When she was doing therounds for Lipstick, she came across as a hugely likeable woman, who wasn't afraid to voice an opinion and say something interesting. Beyonce would simply say some guff that was pre-approved by her people.

And Alesha was a wonderful cackle of a laugh - which makes me laugh too (see also Jamelia).

She really does have a wonderfully filthy witch cackle, I love it.

Is she using any of the old tracks off Fired Up? I don't see any real need to use most of them but Ting A Ling, released next June, would be huge. Seriously. It's just waiting in the wings ready to be huge.

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

Ting-A-Ling is wicked but I just can't see it working as a single...

Either way, nothing from pre-2008 will be on the album.

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

I could watch Alesha dance for weeks on end but as a solo artist I just don't think she has 'it'. I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong but we've been here before haven't we?

To be fair, it stuck for the mass majority of their singles, and allowed them to straddle both sides of the UK urban/pop market at the time. It also gave them success - their debut album sold around 400,000 copies, going Platinum, entering the top 3, and spawning 5 UK top ten singles, on which she raps on 4 out of 5 (and in the video and B-side remix of the 5th, which was so popular it was released on the following single!). Also, she might not be MC-ing on "Scandalous," but she's using her distinctive MC 'growl' and sing-speaking to the melody - it's not the same singing voice she uses on most of "Fired Up"!

I don't think a short middle 8 rap on her solo songs would turn her into a niche artist. If anything, I think it would help elevate her and her mainstream urban/pop tracks above the competition; it provides something uniquely Alesha, something that sets her apart from Rihanna, Beyonce, Leona, Brandy, etc. whilst keeping her mainstream.

I quite agree. I mean, it's not like Lipstick was a bad song.

Lipstick was fierce. If she delivers, I'll be more than happy to support her.
I like her vocal style.

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

I loved Lipstick but when I heard Knockdown I knew it was over. It's not a bad song but for someone with so much talent as Alesha, she doesn't seem to be able to make good pop songs as a solo star. No, that's not right, Knockdown was good but she's capable of much better than that. If her new material is heavy on her singing over her MCing then I dread to think what it's going to sound like. Her singing voice isn't that good, this isn't a problem but she should stick to what she's really good at and that's her rapping.

However! The Boy Does Nothing will disprove this and she will be massive.

(I hope)

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

Hmmm, well ultimately I think it's important that Alesha makes the kind of music she wants to make and becomes the performer she wants to be rather than feel she has to MC because of a eight year old accident or because she's black.

She had more than one record company looking to sign her up post Strictly - being sort after usually allows the arists to make choices about the direction they want to take within reason.

If she's making a pop record it's because she wants to make a pop record.

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

(Knockdown was great.)

Can't wait to hear her new stuff, it'll be interesting how she's handled.

Of course nobody is suggesting she should rap because she's black. She happens to be a good little MC who, given the right music, could rule the world. I don't like the idea that she wants to sing on her songs when she could stand out. It's seems really stupid actually. But I'm really looking forward to hearing her comeback.

I think this MC/singing debate will be answered once we hear The Boy Does Nothing, which had better be beyond brilliant. Alesha to Number 1!!

She does a sort of novelty MCing on 'The Boy Does Nothing.

Her vocal sounds like this;

And the song sounds like this;

Actually no, it sounds more like this;

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

I think Superficial is an excellent template to work from.

Why this wasn't single number one the first time round I will never know.

I'm not sure what to make about the Mambo No.5 stuff. Strangely, I thought it might sound a bit like that.

Re: Alesha - "The Alesha Show" album - November 17th

'Boy Does Nothing' does sound like it sampled Mambo No.5, but not in an overtly cheesy way. It's incredibly catchy and I will be really suprised if it doesn't get a lot of airplay. There is no MC'ing on the track but one could easily be fitted in on a remix (I would die of happiness if Freemasons put their gold fingered tips on this track - they can turn a shit song great, and this song is already great so imagine what they could do ...)

Promo is kicking off mid/end October and it will be performed on SCD. I met with a few people at her label and they are really backing her and putting a lot of money and time into her. The video is being shot next week and so far the concept sounds amazing.

I just hate her attitude and how she's just disowned Polydor, especially after they're the ones who put her on the show (cheekily replacing Sabrina Washington who was the BBC's first choice).
