All Important Single Edits On CD

Also someone organised should list all the edits mentioned in the first post!

Speaking of remastering the HITS albums. I'm not ashamed to admit I have reconstructed the early albums in my iTunes, complete with artwork. They look fabulous in the newfangled "album" view.

The reason HITS 6 is my favourite compilation album ever is that it had the 7" singles versions of Five Star, Madonna and George Michael all in a row.

I think The Greatest Hits Of 1987 2CD still has Boogie Box High's Jive Talkin' 7" exclusively! And also, Mirage's Jack Mix II 7". One more? I think Vesta Williams' Once Bitten, Twice Shy 7" is only here, too. And another rare-ish one is the Man 2 Man Meets Man Parrish's Male Stripper 7", but that's on at least one other CD.

Speaking of Boogie Box High. I saw a cheapo 80s compilation in the supermarket the other day with that track on it and I was quite surprised but it's probably not the 7" mix. I have the Greatest Hits of 1987, result!

Well, the single was released as a limited edition maxi CD with all the commissioned remixes (including unreleased Jellybean ones!) but they left off the real 7"! I was so annoyed. Instead, they had the album mix tagged as "7" Version".

Another definitely only on this CD moment (special PWL edition);

Dance Aid - Give Give Give found here.

A terrible charity record, featuring Mel & Kim, Sinitta, Hazell Dean, Pepsi & Shirlie, Jaki Graham, etc. Obviously, that's a German import, but I got 5 CDs in that series for a tenner, so not too bad.

Ha, I've done the same with all the early NOWs, up to 12. I really ought to do the Hits as well, maybe I will now you've jogged my memory.

Neneh Cherry's Inna City Mamma [Completely Re-Recorded Version] [4:20]? I had to get from here. Another import. Classic case of the CD single only having the 12" version [6:28]. I've since found it on another CD compilation, too, just uncredited, but I can't remember which one it is now. There's a bespoke, even shorter edit of it [3:12] on Smash Hits RAVE for some reason, too.

For anyone that's interested I've noticed a 3min 57sec edit of Tears For Fears Sowing The Seeds Of Love from the usual digital outlets on Music For The Millennium 3

3m 57s?! Wow, that's almost 50% of the track edited out...would be interesting to hear that, just for completism's sake. Will look into it.

Thanks for the HL info, I could do with the proper 7" of Soundtrack.. as it's one of my favourites and the album mix segues straight out of the previous song on Romantic? It's always irked me. The 4.06/4.07-ish mix of Love is all that Matters is the only edit I know of.

With almost all the acts I like, especially big 80s bands, I have all their singles, albums and compilations on CD, so I have everything Human League released on CD in the UK, including all the endless budget compilations except the latest pair. So, I have Soundtrack To A Generation [Edit] [4:01] on the CD single, but it is available as discussed above, and remastered at that, on the 2012 All The Best 2CD. The 7" of Love Action is very readily available, but I've always preferred the album version of that for the extended outro... sublime.

Yeah, just added the mp3 to my wishlist, as I think 4.99 for about 3 versions I don't have is excessive haha. It'll just be used in my iTunes (in several playlists, as it was a #1 for in 1990 and thus makes my Best Of The Year list too), as I am not redoing my HL anthology yet again for one song.

Soundtrack To A Generation is good in your opinion? I think it's one of their worst offerings! "Holy cow!".

It's in the almost-so-bad-its-good bracket for me. Yes, the holy cow bits are naff, but it followed Heart Like A Wheel and at that point the HL could do little wrong for me even when they were doing wrong! I just love the synth riff in the verses, it's very evocative of the Dare vibe. Romantic? was an odd album, by turns fantastic and awful. Some of their best tunes, and some tuneless tripe. My completism just wants the correct 7" mix as I've never had it all the years.

Oh, don't talk to me about McLaren's Duck Rock CD....it's a mess! I managed to make edits of all the singles, but I think either the tracks are misprinted on the disc/sleeve, or the audio software mislabelled them, and then the whole thing is segued as well.

Can someone enlighten me as to how different the 1988 7" mix of Climie Fisher's "Love Changes (Everything)" - mixed by Bob Clearmountain - is to the original album version?

Good question! I'll have to play them back to back to see what exactly the differences are. They're both the same length (4.31/4.32) so it's more about slight modifications to the mix, rather than an edit.

Right, the '88 Clearmountain mix is a lot more "rock" - the guitar's up in the mix, the drums have a bit more oomph, and it has new backing vox. Plus a few little tinkles here and there, haha.

Thanks. And which version is on most compilations?!

The original, I think. Neither edition of the Everything CD (1988/2009) has it, and I'm looking on discogs to see where my copy of it has come from...whether it's on the Best Of, or some 80s compilation.

EDIT: Okay, this is going to get....interesting! Just playing some clips on amazon, and already the first two mp3s on the list are 3.55 edits of the Clearmountain mix! My mix is 4.32.

Watch this space.

Phew....so, here we have the compilations available on amazon which have the Clearmountain mix, in different lengths:

3.55 edit - Greatest Hits: 80s, Massive Hits! - Eighties
4.24 - Anthems Alternative 80s - Ministry Of Sound
4.27 - Top of the Pops - Love, Original Hits - Eighties
4.28 - Pure Party, TOTP 1988 Bitesize EP, Pure 80s Pop
4.29 - This Is...1988

I need a lie down! Haha. Strangely, I went years without having this mix....I think it's also on a 1996 Best Of Climie Fisher, and obviously the 1988 CD single.
