All Important Single Edits On CD

No, I don't have it...but given it's turning up all over the place, and that the NOWs tended to put the proper versions on (see: INXS, Human League etc in 1988), it probably is.

Oh, before I got lost in Climieland, I was about to post on the Thompson Twins, another minefield of mixes on different CDs.

After many years and many TT compilations, it seems that to get the original *UK* 7" single mix of Lay Your Hands On Me, you need to get the "Platinum & Gold Collection", which ironically may be a US release (I got mine in the Notting Hill MVE, so can't say for sure). Also, the original 7" mix of Sister Of Mercy - the one with the slow, piano intro on the first verse, before the full arrangement kicks in - is also on that collection I think (he says unconvincingly)....there are certainly at least three versions of Sister.. on Thompson Twins best ofs. One is a strange "U.S." edit that's very different, and the other is the album version.

They sound incredibly similar but the NOW 12 version sounds a bit more....jangley? than the youtube clip you posted. Not entirely sure I would have noticed a difference.

Hmm, strange! It is very different, but maybe it's down to the YT quality. The original isn't so beefed up, there are extra synth washes in the verses on the remix, the backing vocals are more pronounced (and re-recorded, I think, especially the ad-libs at the end), just generally more rock-ified.

For those that are interested in edits, before I started the digital transfers of CD. I bought quite a few ex DJ edits on 7". I will list them here so if you're interested you'll know how long they last!

I was literally wondering about this about an hour ago! I could only find a 5.00 mix of this in my iTunes, but I'm sure I've got an edit somewhere on CD.

Speaking of remastering the HITS albums. I'm not ashamed to admit I have reconstructed the early albums in my iTunes, complete with artwork. They look fabulous in the newfangled "album" view.

I'm up to HITS3 so far, although HITS2 caused a bit of a problem as Big Sound Authority STILL don't exist anywhere on CD or even bloody mp3. I have vinyl rips of my LP but they're not of a good enough standard. Boo.

Anyway, I also spent far too long "restoring" the original HITS album sleeves from crummy google scans....

I don't like all the faffery that's going on around the edges of the HITS 1-3 album sleeves so I have just done away with them! I know that's probably an affront to everyone's OCD tendencies but they just look so very dated.

Thanks for the decent quality upgrades!

Haha, I agree they look very dated...they didn't even look very good at the time! I think from Hits 4 through to Hits 10 they vastly improved.

I've recreated all the first 6 Hits albums now in iTunes, albeit with a couple of missing tracks that elude me on CD.

Talking about Paul Young for anyone that likes edits, Everything Must Change can be found on 120 Eighties Hits with a 4min 39sec edit and also if you happen to have a compilation called Love Bites & School Nites, I think this CD has a 3min 46sec edit of Everytime You Go Away.

Has anyone found the proper 7" version of Jaki Graham's Step Right Up anywhere? I thought it might have been on the reissued CD but it seems to be different.
Another one is David Grant's Change which I would think unless you are lucky enough to have the original CD pressing of that LP you'd be out of luck.

There are subtle differences at the start of the LP version to the 7" version so with not having NOW 8 at hand I can't tell if it's the 7" mix or not. Thanks for checking it out for me.

...
Swing Out Sister's infamous 7" mix of Twilight World exists only on a couple of now-obscure and expensive Best Ofs, the 1996 one with the duo under an umbrella being the most available of them.
...

How did I not know about this?! That umbrella album must be the 1996 Best of Swing Out Sister, and the other the 1989 Japan only Another Non-Stop Sister, which is what the song's Wikipedia page mentions. Of course, it's been discussed here at PJ before, and it's interesting to see how both anfunny2003 and you, Eric, discussed this on another site too. There they mention a Japanese box set which includes the single edit too.

However, I understand them if they didn't want to keep that version available. The possibly only YouTube video for it has 182 views, and it's evidently just shortened by an interrupting fadeout at the end. The official video has that version, and I might get it on iTunes, but that doesn't make it good. This is a case of a "remix" being the proper version, I believe.

You can't have a 6 minute extended mix as the only one easily available on CD, haha! No no no. It sends us OCD chart completists into meltdown, and also since I have the vinyl 7", it's something I wanted to replicate on CD. The "Superb Superb" mix was the one the band put on the original album/CD, but it's more than 2 minutes longer and has a very slow (but lovely) intro. I'm just glad I eventually found out where to get the single mix.

The version of Step Right Up on Now 8 is definitely different to the album version. I remember reading that the 7'' is what's on the Absolute Essential compilation from Music Club Deluxe in 2010, which i have, and it sounds like the same version as on Now 8 to me. Although the sound quality isn't fantastic.

Probably the best CD i have for rare 7'' versions is 'The Dance Chart' released by Telstar in 1987. Man 2 Man Meets Man Parrish 'Male Stripper', Freeez 'I.O.U. (1987 Club Vocal)', The Concept 'Mr DJ', Whistle '(Nothing Serious) Just Buggin' and Wham! 'Wham Rap'. (Though 'Wham Rap' is also on DMG's '100 Hits - 80s' from 2007).

The single mix of Jaki Graham's 'Step Right Up' is indeed on the 2010 'Absolute Essential' collection.

Other 7'' versions I've found after extensive searching are:

Elton John & George Michael: Wrap Her Up [4.16] on a 1986 German V.A. CD 'High Life'.
Massive Attack: Be Thankful (Oakenfold Edit) [3.50] on a 1992 Spanish V.A. CD 'Zona De Baile vol. 2'
Dead Or Alive: Brand New Lover [3.38] on a 1996 American V.A. CD 'VH1 The Big 80's'
Jigsaw: Sky High (Hammond Mix) [4.00] on a 2003 Japanese V.A. CD 'Disco Fine'

Of course I'm no expert, and these may be in many other places, but took me ages to track them down, and if anyone knows where I can track down Taffy's 'Step By Step' [1987] I'd be grateful.
