Chris finds the words to carve himself out of a failing love, and does so with determination and sensibility. He recognizes that his lover's emotional availability changes wildly from one day to the other and he'd much rather leave and ask himself if it is worth it alone to come to the final decision that, when it's over, it's over for good. All this backed by a minimal beat and soft strings both in the background and the foreground, albeit briefly in the latter case. The song made an appearance in the now-cancelled Gossip Girl reboot in season 1 episode Hope Sinks. A relaunch which I know nothing about, but the title is weirdly a fitting descriptor for the song in actuality.
I find the next verse is fundamental to bring more dimension, as in it, Chris acknowledges the hurt of the partner, as he sees them kneeling and crying in the shower but perhaps away from him, hence they hide their feelings and this seems to be a key factor in the imminent breakup. Nada's segment in La vita nuova's short film has Chris in a beautiful tulle leotard featuring a long cape/train waking up in different locations of the film's neoclassical mansion and sprinting through hallways; only to reconnect with the (handsome) Baphomet creature we first meet in People, I've been sad.
This encounter happens backstage, as he lies down hiding in the shadows at the same time the lyrics are narrating the scene, and he bleeds out as Chris' vampirical nature allows him to drain the life force out of him. A perfect queering up of two demons and lead into the final act to be honest! In a strange turn of events, this is the first of two songs in the whole rate that received no commentary, for some reason (the second one yet to be revealed). ¿Comentarios sobre esta canción? No hay Nada, indeed. Now go rewatch that glorious bit in La vita nuova!

Well I for one was hoping this could be a top 40 sneak! Boasting a 21-song gap between eliminations, we see Charli once again in the rate, and what a way to hear from her again! The penultimate track in how i'm feeling now is the certified balls-to-the-wall, loud banger that the album needed. It's a direct takeover of synths, attack on that bpm and sensory overload. Which is perhaps why @R27 (10) so quickly clocks the superior abrasive banger from the album:
"In my opinion, this takes everything "pink diamond" does wrong and makes it right. The lyrics succinctly captured how those early months of the pandemic felt when most of the world was on lockdown (the feelings of boredom, listlessness, and the resulting yearning for "late nights" and "feel[ing] the heat from all the bodies"). While the former track felt performative and regressive, "anthems" felt like an actual reflection of what people were going through and broke new ground for her whilst still feeling quintessentially Charli. The song was, appropriately, an anthem for a whole new era". Spot on! And the great thing, like with the rest of the album, is that anthems can be more broadly applied to any time in life when you've felt isolated or stuck into one routine, but still bursting with lust for losing yourself to hedonism a bitsy. @godspeed (8) can likely relate to this sentiment: "A pretty good musical representation of how hectic I felt on certain days during lockdown".

It's no wonder how they felt inspired by classic party film Project X as the sound and theme are very in the vein of Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki Remix), just that anthems details more of a one-or-two-person party that happens in your bedroom and you're trying to fill in the gaps in the middle ofuncertainty and some fear. Two days later, Charli hosted an Instagram Live in which the angels could comment and work with her in order to write and flesh out the other verses. I hope I speak for more than one in that it was a unique, surreal experience that only an event like this could have birthed. I'll link that below if you want to live that memory once again.

Has Charli x Cecile happened already? You're onto something good, dear!

Well it's not the scurvy-prone spaghetti lover, and this is not the closing two tracks in Art Angels, but here's a song about climate change that mentions the colonization of Mars by humanity. Distant echoes of a sleek, modern production comes in and out of hearing range while Rina is done with the abuse of power, black gold and capitalism outlining these injustices like it's really our last chance to right some wrongs and prevent ecosphere collapse. I think there's a good balancing between frustration and hopeful call to action in her performance throughout, but sonically it's easily one of the least memorable moments in the album.
@CorgiCorgiCorgi (9) lightly calls back to Time Out and Through the Wire: "Rina Sawayama, queen of interludes". Would be true if she didn't go on and skip them in Hold the Girl! But I guess you can count Minor Feelings as an intro, so close enough? @R27 (8), meanwhile, is just confused: "Don’t see how a nearly three-minute song counts as an interlude, but when it’s this good who really cares?".
@godspeed (8) proves my point that this song is Grimes-coded: " This sounds like something I would have hammered in 2016. Climate grief on a catchy and glossy yet melancholic pop production? Sign me up!". Go and listen to Life in the Vivid Dream and Butterfly right away! But @Trouble in Paradise (5) is rather unimpressed: "Pretty production but not much else". Please do not advocate for the extinction of humanity.
