Anyone remember Asia Cruise? The first Asian artist signed to Jive/Hitz Committee released the viral single 'Selfish' but left the industry due to several reasons, but one namely being the pressure to appear 'less ethinc'.

She went onto get an English degree and work at a law firm in California. Music-wise, she's uploaded several tracks to YouTube and SoundCloud, including cute bop 'When the World Said No' and a cover of 'Space Cowboy'.

'Selfish' is still really, really good.

I was obsessed with Selfish. What a forgotten gem it is, thanks for the reminder!

'Selfish' was my JAM back in the day. I watched the video again a few weeks ago and then youtube started autoplaying it after everything I watched! I love Cornerboyz productions too, they're were very of their time.

I had no idea that was the reason she left the industry. I did find it fishy that they had this whole 'Who is Asia Cruise' marketing strategy. I guess they thought it would be harder to promote an Asian artist so let the music speak for itself. I'm glad Kpop has allowed more Asian artists to finally enter the western music market. There's a lot of love for her in the youtube comments though.

This one from the end of the 'Selfish' video is one of my favourites. I'm pretty sure I heard that it was meant to be given to Britney at some point too!

Ughhh 'Boyfriend' is so good too. They really did Asia wrong huh. This is a cute little interview with her from last year, touching on what happened: https://camillejwoodhouse.com/2018/09/22/156/

It's so shocking that - still to this day - none of these major labels are selling English-language Asian talent to the Top 40.

I apologize for the random bump, but I just learned that her debut album quietly was uploaded somehow years ago. Has anyone been able to take a listen to it?

I remember she released some country-esque tracks as Asia Nalani. She sounded good on those:

"Lego House"
"Love Lives On"
"See You Again"

EDIT oh wait - I just checked my iPhone. I have a 16-track collection called Who Is Asia Cruise?
