Ava Max - "Lovin Myself" + Don't Click Play (TBD)

I mean, I'd consider myself one of Ava's Maximum Apologists, but...even I find this the very definition of milquetoast.

• It's too slow. The kick drum is aiming for "insistent," but landed firmly on "plodding" instead.

• Also, it's too (consistently) low for her. Her mid/upper register is where her vocals shine, and this is just too low for her to cut through with any attitude.

• Lastly, the way the chorus melody resolves is...unfulfilling. I appreciate that it was trying to not be predictable, but...it's just not satisfying, especially when that's where the titular lyrics hit.

It's not the worst song in the world, but...I would never reach for it again when she has so much better in her catalog.

The chorus is a bit of an earworm for us who can get easily hooked on a very basic melody.

But, as always with her, it is what it is.

Maybe You're The Problem was the start of the demise.
It’s pretty obvious Cirkut was the driving force behind her music. There’s not much to work with without his involvement in the process.
Maybe Ava was The Problem all along.

Diamonds & Dancefloors still stands up as a great pop album but Lost Your Faith and all the recent material is aggressively average.

In spent of her output being generally quite shit I have a lot of good will towards Ava. She's a bit like the "A Court of Thorns and Roses" of pop music. It's disposable mush designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience whilst being familiar and unchallenging.

The song exists, she sounds fine, it starts, it finishes, it'll be played on the radio, it'll be on Spotify playlists, then there will be something else that does the same thing shortly after.
