Ava Max - "Spot a Fake" + 3rd Album

He/Him/His
She had some really stellar tracks that did not rely on samples for Diamonds and Dancefloors. I personally loved Million Dollar Baby and Maybe You're The Problem, but especially Weapons really did it for me.

The Motto (Tiësto's VIP Mix) was by far my most-played song of its year, which I believe didn't rely on a sample either. She can do it. She's just been choosing not to, which is odd. I've been playing My Oh My quite a bit, but it's no The Motto (again, only here for the stellar Tiësto mix which has become my main version).

...Is she committing to a gig? I genuinely think her problem is that she's maybe one of the most unconvincing popstars going. Like she'd rather be doing anything else. Everything she does feels kind of calculated but not even in a particularly intelligent way, it's like she's perpetually just... mine sweeping the unfinished or discarded ideas from other, better artists.

I think this kind of... not low-tier, but perhaps low-stakes pop music can be done really, really well, where everyone knows what they're getting and what is being provided. I just don't think she's good at providing even that. I'm really curious to see what happens when this flops too, because the Serbian pharmacy soundtrack didn't work, so now if the samples aren't working... where does that leave her?

That's the difference between us I suppose, I think Diamonds & Dancefloors was a very sturdy testament to her doing it really, really well. This new single works for me but I wouldn't say it goes as far as that album which is a hill I'm willing die on. Specifically because I've seen certain subsets of homosexuals dismissing Diamonds & Dancefloors in a way that feels like the last vestige of misguided poptimism needing a punching bag to justify overintellectualizing Charli XCX.

She's in her own lane, and I say that respectfully. I know what I'm getting when I click play on a song of hers and I'm fine with that. The surprises amongst Diamonds & Dancefloors ("In the Dark", "One of Us", "Cold as Ice", "Last Night on Earth") shows that she can deviate from her usual.

Armography and a Charlie’s Angels reference….

Maybe You're the Problem is one of the best things she's done and its flopping is probably the reason she went back to heavily rely on samples and her past hits.

She did something fresh and people didn't listen to it, so she said fuck y'all, get The Motto again.

Does Maybe You're the Problem not kind of rely heavily on a sample too though nn

I'm surprised her label allows her to make such niche music. Besides the most hardcore pop-loving basic bop apologist gays its appeal is practically nonexistent. Very limited reach.
She’s an interesting one. Most of her singles aren’t big hits anywhere now, yet she has multiple 500m+ streamed songs on Spotify. It seems she’s not massive anywhere but well known everywhere and this equals nil hits but a lot of streams. She must be making enough money from these streams to generate a good profit.
