B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Ballot) | The Nu Metal Rate | Winner Revealed

NU-METAL-RATE.png

(Yes this background image is not mine, I found it on some fan-art site but it's amazing and pretty much covers all the major bands in the rate)

Why?

Has there ever been another rate on this forum that covers metal as a genre, exclusively? Definitely not. Combine that with the fact that this was my listening experience from the end of middle school, through high school, and most of college; in other words the genre means a lot to me. So, I felt like this was a lane worth exploring for a fresh rate idea and felt like I'd be the perfect host.

Who?

I think Linkin Park had the most crossover appeal from nu metal, especially when they went away from the genre in later years and became even more mainstream. In fact, fans of all genres of music seemed to always love Linkin Park from their beginning. That's why I have all of their nu metal era singles and promotional singles. I also feel like System of a Down crossed over in some ways and appealed to fans of pop-rock/alternative radio, blending in with listeners who had never listened to any metal before. If you look at streaming numbers, these two bands have far and way the most streams on Spotify, in nu metal. System of a Down's biggest hits even give Linkin Park singles a run for their money.

Since this was going to be the 'one shot' to present this short-lived music genre to the masses, I felt like including some of the genres biggest hits was the way to go. Might as well give everyone a little taste of how diverse it really was. I tried to keep the song list as listener-friendly as possible, but a lot of songs were 'auto includes' because of how huge their impact was to the scene. That being said, two was the most songs any band from this section got. I didn't get too cute with personal favorites and only chose the largest commercial hits, so hopefully you've heard most of the songs. I also limited this rate to 50 songs total, so it's not time consuming.

Where?

Spotify

Here

How?

1. Listen to all songs, score them all between 0 and 10. Up to 2 decimals allowed, so those who do 0.25 and 0.75, can.

2. All commentary is welcomed for this because I don't foresee me getting 'big rate' volume, so it won't be hard to sort out.

3. PM the scores and comments to me.

4. Special treatment of 11 for this rate. You can give one main act song your 11, one Nu Metal Sampler song your 11, or you can give a song from each section a 10.5.

When?

Since I'm trying to get as many voters as possible, I'm going to have a large voting period, even if it is only 50 songs. That being said, I likely will not extend, per usual. (I choose a deadline and I like to get going on that day.)

Friday November 19th by Midnight my time (EST)

Hmm... on the one hand I kind of want to give this a shot, but on the other hand I feel like I'd probably give 80% of the songs a bad score dd. I think I'll try listening to a few of the songs on shuffle and see if it's worth participating.

I am really not policing scores that hard for this because I understand the music is divisive in general. So as long as voters give everything a fair shake, I am good.

--

I will be doing an initial tagging spree once I gather all the names that I believe might vote.

Just throwing names out there to see if you'd be interested, I either saw you vote for nu metals songs in song contests, liked a post about this rate, or figured you might like it -- in case you're wondering "why the hell am I being tagged?". Please just say "I'm in!" or "Hell no!" so I can continue to tag you or stop.

@Diet Pop!
@If You Go
@berserkboi (I think these kind of loud vocals are 'pas pour moi' but you fall under the category outlined above so here you are)
@Sprockrooster

@Trouble in Paradise
@slaybellz
@Cotton Park
@iheartpoptarts (I remember you being surprisingly into my nu metal songs back in the plug.dj days)

Thanks for the tag but I probably won't participate as I don't know enough of the songs. Numb would be my 11 though!

Thanks for letting me know. I bet Numb could get another 11 from someone else as it is a pretty popular song from them.

---

I am going to work on getting my 'History of Nu Metal' writeup some more tonight, should be able to post it this week.

---

I'd also venture to say that a watch2gether or maybe even turntable.fm (which is literally a plug.dj clone) session could be in order since there could be new songs for people. If there's interest I'd run it, but I don't want to schedule one and only have like one person show up dd.

I'm more of a fan of Electro-Rock Linking Park (albums 3,4 and 5) and I'm already dropping out of rates nn. Sorry beb I will need to sit this one out but I'll follow the results!
