WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK?????
THIS ELIMINATION HAS ME PROPERLY MAD WHAT THE HELL ARE Y'ALL ON
This is the one rate cut on this our lords day that hasn't hurt me deeply.
Also scream at the rate title, thanks for the brief reprieve from rate trauma @ohnostalgia!
I gotta thank Tegan for ruthlessly exposing her creative process so I didn't have to go in on the lyrics. I wonder if she still feels proud of it three years later. It's such a massive step backwards into generic blahness.
I'd say the same but I knew it wouldn't get one.
It was never one of my favorites on the album - I mean, it's no Closer or Goodbye, Goodbye, is it, in terms of catchiness - but one day I was playing the album and it just clicked with me. It's the harmonies that make it for me. Plus the lyrical callbacks to The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, which I adore in its recording by Alison Moyet (see my avatar, kii).
I don't know exactly how to describe why I like it. It's just kind of magical and sparkly and Disney-like, without being twee.
I'm watching for any of you who like that. @VivaForever gets a pass cause she hasn't been the reading the trauma you've all put me through
Well, mess at you not giving it an 11, then. More precisely, mess at nobody giving it an 11. (Though genuinely, thank you @ohnostalgia for listing me as an honorary 11. Just for that I won't go after you for hating it.)
I had to laugh at this because clearly Tegan's never written a straight love song either.
I love Sara for feeling the need to specify it was on mute.
How do you know I haven't been reading, precious? I haven't.
@VivaForever I promised I would! I've typed out lots of great Sara moments in my eliminations if you ever get bored and want to read through.
How the hell did that make it so far?!?!!!!!!! LORD'T.
Probably people like you giving it a 9.7!
I'm not super sad that this is eliminated despite my 10. Kii.
But congrats @ohnostalgia! You can finally stop dragging our Heartthrob-loving asses. Hehe.
tegan: no it's fine, it's totally fine uh. but i take some cold medication and then i was still feeling stuffed up so i like took some of that nasal spray. but then i was kinda feeling all weird so then i drank some energy drink as well. i totally tripped out during the last song, went into a completely different part and laughing at myself while- like oh yeah, there's so many people here.... that won't happen again.
sara: you don't want to take a sip of water or something?
tegan: no, no, i don't want to ruin the high.
sara: do you want to bring the other tegan in, the replacement tegan?
tegan: i'm going to sit down at some point.
sara: yeah. i see. i like how she starts to fall apart during- now it's my song coming up. so now i'm not totally convinced that she remembers how to play it.
tegan: oh it will be like rehearsal with you.
sara: snap! i use that all the time, that one. she just- stop being mean.
31. I Bet It Stung 8.04
HIGH: 10.00 x 4 @2014 @digitalkaiser @Jwentz @Petty Mayonnaise
LOW: 6.00 x 2 @LA Hallucinations @Remorque
MY SCORE: 8.00
ALBUM: So Jealous
"This is the first song that Sara wrote of the new stuff that got on the record, and she wrote it probably two or three months after we finished If It Was You, our last record which hadn’t even come out yet [at that point]. It was the first time she’d really ever recorded anything on Protools and the demo of it basically sounds just like the actual recording except with drums and bass. She ran her vocals through a Sans Amp plug-in, it was really trashy, and it was Sara’s ode to Smashing Pumpkins and all the hard rock bands she wishes she was in. She said that that was the type of band she wishes she was in and she wishes the whole record sounded like that, so we’re gonna throw her out and see how she does on her own. But yeah, that’s one of my favorite songs and it was written in a series of songs that didn’t make it on the record that Sara thought were kind of personal. She was going through a breakup at the time and didn’t end up wanting to put them on the record but she allowed us to put “I Bet It Stung” on because it turned out really great and we all really loved it." - Tegan
I'm very sorry @Jwentz- I tried to space out these eliminations so I didn't snatch four 10s from you in two days. Losing I Bet It Stung leaves us with just Where Does The Good Go and Walking With a Ghost repping So Jealous. That feels like the correct two final songs, but I don't know if we should only be down to these two so early! I really really love the lyrics on this one; Sara just knows how to write a compelling song without being unnecessarily wordy. This is not a knock on Tegan - cause lord knows I love our little chatterbox - but it's always great to have that contrast. Musically, this is probably one of their heaviest songs so I'm actually surprised it made it this far! There's a beautiful meandering synth backing the entire song and I'm a bit obsessed with that. You can tell this album was made in the 00s Canadian indie scene and that the guy from New Pornographers produced it because I'm thrown back to some songs from that era (actually reminds me of songs like Lola Stars and Stripes by The Stills). I'm definitely not knocking the song at all, especially with Tegan's comments as context. Sara absolutely nailed that Canadian indie rock scene vibe.
@Remorque (6) clearly does not understand quality over quantity: "This is actually a little apropos-of-nothing-y to me, but that’s just probably because it’s kinda empty on lyrics. Having said that, I actually quite like the production and the flow of this one. The girls sound great too which is a nice little bonus." I thought usually reliable @constantino (7) would love this, but nope: "The instrumentation is the standout here for me, melody-wise it isn’t the most memorable." I'll let @Jwentz take that comment. @Posh Spears (8) is ready to star in their very own brooding music video: "A very nice song to take a walk to." Let me know when it hits YouTube! I think @eccentricsimply (6.5) is going to have to go into witness protection after this string of travesties: "This is probably going to sound repetitive because I'm probably going to write this same thing in a lot of songs, but this is for real something I would've loved so hard when I was an early teen, it's perfectly in line with the type of music I listened to the most back then." @Jwentz fight ha. @Slice of Life (8.75) shows how they continue to be the model new T&S stan: "I was wondering if this was the right song because the title I Bet It Stung doesn't appear on it. Kii. This is another drum-heavy track and it's actually quite wonderful. This album is slowly but surely winning me over." Listen to it on really good headphones is my personal tip.
I'll let our 10 givers line up to pay their respects. @digitalkaiser: "This is one of my favorite tracks on this album. I love a good wailing guitar bit, and this song really has those powerful deep chords backdropped against their higher cutting voices. Then that chorus explodes and you feel so many things. “OOOOOOOOOHHHHH GOO AWAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY” There is a way they manipulate their voices to create such a strong vibe and feeling that’s clear to the listener, and this song really showcases it." @Jwentz: "I love the way Sara’s vocals are obscured in this one, it makes her sound a bit removed which works with the slightly detached lyrics. Always enjoyed this one live too." And lastly @Petty Mayonnaise: "What kind of lost 80s classic with massive instrumentation and bouncy but slightly melancholy chorus? In all seriousness, having only listened to their more pop stuff before the rate, this seems like such a sign in retrospect that that would be a good direction for them to go in." The signs were always there!
I kinda hoped this one would outlast the other two for So Jealous as it is a big favorite of mine, but alas #31 is pretty good for a song that can come off a bit cold (and is also not on LY2D).
Remember how you travelled back in time and submitted more new scores for me? Oh .. I'm still waiting.
There's a lot more fuckery coming on our way to the Top 20. I might have my biggest meltdown yet.
Ugh honestly I miss hanging out in this thread more often. Sorry if I'm not posting here that much @ohnostalgia! My career as K-pop subforum's Chart Chanteuse has been my priority these past few days. Hehe.
My God now that elimination stung
@2014 stole my "it stung" joke so uh
Separate names with a comma.
