Director Zack Snyder Unites Superman and Batman in One Explosive New Film

BURBANK, CA, July 20, 2013 – On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyderis bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution,Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcomingfilm brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.

Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.”

Despite the press release, from what was said at Comic-Con, it is a Man of Steel sequel, featuring Batman, as opposed to it's own thing.

I'm not sure about this crossover. I'm hoping Lois gets her deserved screentime. Oh and please let the main baddie be The Joker.

I wonder if we're reaching the end of our culture's fascination with superhero movies. It's been about 15 years now of every year bringing a new slew of films, and I have to believe that people are clamoring for something new, in the same way that Die Hard came out at exactly the right time.

So, I understand why DC would want to do this, but I also wonder if this is Plan B after Man of Steel didn't exactly set the box office on fire.

I can't help but feel a little disappointed by this. On one hand, its a dream come true - but on the other, I feel like Man Of Steel is getting pushed to the side, and the whole DC movie universe is getting rushed.

In an ideal world I would have gone for a straight Man of Steel sequel - give him the full focus as the pillar of the DC universe. Batman is always going to trump Superman with the coolness/popularity factor, but he needed at least one more solo outing before the Justice League starts to form. I think introducing a brand new Batman in another characters film is a bad idea. The only way I see this working is if it is indeed Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing him. I'd actually prefer a completely rebooted Batman along the same lines of the Arkham games - they have the perfect mix of the gritty realness of the Dark Knight trilogy, with the comic book Burton-esque feel (my favourite).

Ideally - I would have liked the upcoming DC universe to look like this.

Man Of Steel II - Late 2014 - straight-up sequel, Lex Luther funding the re-building of Metropolis etc. Lots of Lois and Clark
Batman Reboot - 2015 - Complete reboot, Arkham style
Wonder Woman - 2016 - The 'Thor' of the DC movie universe, basically Diana and the Amazons on Themyscira
The Flash/Aquaman - 2016 - Either one of these would basically be the build-up to the JL film. Basic origins story. I'm thinking something like The Amazing Spider-Man for The Flash - like a small, indie feel right up until a big ending leading up too...
Justice League - 2017 - which would be The Avengers x10

Justice League will never work. It's too uncool! Who really wants to see Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and all those characters? We only require Batman and Superman. This will be DC's Avengers killing movie!

I too prefer DC to Marvel but I don't think public appetite exists for Green Lantern and the others. Green Arrow is already a hit on television and maybe could cross over to the big screen alongside Superman/Batman...but it seems unlikely, doesn't it?

You are right! But do you believe it will last forever? We're seeing an X-Men film with the two casts combined, another Avengers movie and an expanding Marvel universe, Batman & Superman, and three more Spiderman films.

I just wonder if we're getting close to a point where people feel overwhelmed (and over saturated) by superheroes, and whether or not they'll stay relevant as we head deeper into the 2000s.

I'll see this for Batman but I haven't even bothered with Man of Steel yet. It just looks... a bit poo.

The excitement of a Batman/Superman combo movie is completely lost on me. I have never been interested in DC characters, with the exception of Batman. Man Of Steel was alright, but it will be interesting to see how the next incarnation of Batman fits into that world.

No, not at all - at some point tastes will change and they'll make less of them - just like the western did in the 70s (maybe Blazing Saddles had something to do with that).

I guess the last movie craze that crashed and burned was movies-based-on-TV-shows... though maybe that was because of of those were terrible.

The same could be said for Pixar-style animated movies (talking animals, talking cars, more talking animals and talking planes). There seem to be even more of those coming out than superhero movies.

Ben Affleck is Batman.

I may have gotten a little bit excited when I realized that Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill would be in a movie together wearing tight costumes.

It's odd, especially when you consider Warner's will have locked him in for additional sequels.

And even as an actor, I'm not sold on the choice. Very weird.
