Best Of 2016... Year End

It's that time of year again! No not the time of year for abusing Photoshop, that's an all year round thing for me. Time for us all to look back on the year in music and compile it in list format; be that albums, EPs, songs, music videos, #moments or whatever. I know it's still mid-November but I wanted to get this up and running, and unless somebody surprise drops an album between now and the end of the year then your lists will no doubt already be taking shape.

If you want to revisit your lists from the mid-year thread and have a chuckle when you realise Q's 3+4 have blasted them into irrelevance they're here.

I don't think there will be many that will say that 2016 hasn't been a great year for music, whatever your chosen genre or sub-genre or sub-sub-genre from career pinnacle efforts from returning superstars such as Rihanna and Beyoncé, cracking debut efforts from Låpsley, ZAYN and Shura, to the likes of Laura Mvula, BANKS and The 1975 proving there is no such thing as the 2nd album syndrome.

2016 has also been a harsh mistress though, and we've lost some of the biggest characters in music this year with both David Bowie and Leonard Cohen taking their last bow not long after their albums Blackstar and You Want It Darker were released. Two critically acclaimed albums which saw both artists taking an unflinching look at their own mortality. Probably a bigger shock still was the death of Prince, who has left behind one of the most daring and adventurous legacies in pop. And more recently the innovative and frequently outspoken leader of Dead Or Alive, Pete Burns.

...And now to close with a moving tribute to those we have sadly lost this year, please welcome Annie Lennox:

  6. I'm a little tired, so I misread and thought Annie Lennox had died. My heart jumped in my throat, and I had to google it only to find out it wasn't true.

    Anyways, beautifully written @NecessaryVoodoo.

  9. My list of favourite albums isn't terribly different from the one I posted in the mid-year thread:

    All Saints - Red Flag
    AlunaGeorge - I Remember
    Ariana Grande - Dangerous Woman
    Britney Spears - Glory
    Fifth Harmony - 7/27
    Kaiser Chiefs - Stay Together
    Maren Morris - Hero
NAO - For All We Know
    Olly Murs - 24 HRS
    OneRepublic - Oh My My
    Perfume - Cosmic Explorer
    Rihanna - Anti
Robbie Williams - The Heavy Entertainment Show
    SHINee - 1 of 1
    Shura - Nothing's Real
Tiffany - I Just Wanna Dance
    Tove Lo - Lady Wood

And probably a few others I've forgotten. Glory Days might sneak its way onto the list if it's any good too.

  10. Albums this year are such a pain - I have 20+ battling it out for the last few spots of my top ten.

Singles is more straightforward as I keep a rolling list all year round, constantly shifting it about:

    3. Royksopp/Susanne Sundfor - "Never Ever"
    4. Georgia Ruth - "Cloudbroke"

    8. Margo Price - "Hurtin' (On the Bottle)"

    10. Desiigner - "Tiimmy Turner"

I need to wait for Starboy, but can I say I love this picture and I love Zayn up there with Rih, Solange and Ariana? Amazing.

  15. You ready for your dose of pretentious gittery yet, PJers? Happy to oblige you. There was so much awesome shit this year that I decided to put together a top 50 instead of my usual top 30 or 40. For the first time, I'm combining the metal list with the regular list to see how that works out. (Quite well, I think.) With the delay of Pain of Salvation's In the Passing Light of Day, this list will probably remain as it is unless Starboy surprises me or Run the Jewels 3 appears before the year's end.

    1. David Bowie - Blackstar
    2. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
    3. Swans - The Glowing Man
    4. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
    5. Vektor - Terminal Redux
    6. Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
    7. Nails - You Will Never Be One of Us
    8. Devin Townsend - Transcendence
    9. Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor's Guide To Earth
    10. Deathspell Omega - The Synarchy of Molten Bones

    11. Anderson Paak - Malibu
    12. Solange - A Seat at the Table
    13. Cobalt - Slow Forever
    14. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
    15. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker (NB: This wasn't originally going to be on here, but marathon listening sessions in the wake of his death have given it new context solidified its place on the list. Well done.)
    16. Be'lakor - Vessels
    17. Case/Lang/Veirs - Case/Lang/Veirs
    18. Anaal Nathrakh - The Whole of the Law
    19. Denzel Curry - Imperial
    20. Alcest - Kodama

    21. Preoccupations - Preoccupations
    22. Borknagar - Winter Thrice
    23. Moonsorrow - Jumalten Aika
    24. Frank Ocean - Blonde
    25. Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep of Reason
    26. PJ Harvey - The Hope Six Demolition Project
    27. Insomnium - Winter's Gate
    28. Michael Kiwanuka - Love and Hate
    29. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Dissociation
    30. Death Grips - Bottomless Pit

    31. Blood Orange - Freetown Sound
    32. Myrath - Legacy
    33. Ihsahn - Arktis
    34. Deftones - Gore
    35. Lucinda Williams - The Ghosts of Highway 20
    36. Fallujah - Dreamless
    37. The Avalanches - Wildflower
    38. Neurosis - Fires Within Fires
    39. ScHoolboy Q - Blank Face LP
    40. Oathbreaker - Rheia

    41. Epica - The Holographic Principle
    42. Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression
    43. Oranssi Pazuzu - Varatehlija
    44. Angel Olsen - My Woman
    45.
    Asphyx - Incoming Death
    46. Drive-By Truckers - American Band
    47. Ray LaMontagne - Ouroboros
    48. Alter Bridge - The Last Hero
    49. Cass McCombs - Mangy Love
    50. Death Angel - The Evil Divide

For the record, Kendrick Lamar's untitled unmastered and Steven Wilson's 4 1/2 both easily would have made the list, but I consider them more compilations than albums. I instead note them here, along with Pain of Salvation's live release Remedy Lane Re:lived.
