Best Of 2016... Year End

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by NecessaryVoodoo, Nov 16, 2016.

  1. I'll be thinking about this write-up for a very long time. Thank you so much for sharing, @Remyky22.

  2. Because I can't limit myself, I don't do just a singles list at the end of the year. To avoid certain albums (*cough*Lemonade*cough*) from dominating completely, I limit each artist to three entries at most. Anyway, to celebrate the new year, here's my top 50 songs of 2016.

  12. Thank you for the catch! And double thanks for the Nas/Kiwakuna recommendation!! I know very little of Kiwakuna (aside from the amazing Love & Hate), but I'm listening to the Get Down album as I'm writing this, and it sounds pretty awesome so far (the new version of Black Man in a White World goes off!!!).

  13. Glad you like the soundtrack. It is one of my favourite albums this year. It gets more disco and gospel and less oldschool hiphop towards the end, but that also keeps me interested.
  14. RUNAWAYWITHME'S ALBUMS OF 2016 (be prepared for word vomit):

    1. Glory - Britney Spears [Invitation, Better, Man On The Moon, Just Luv Me, Make Me..., Just Like Me, all of the album] after the shitshow that was "Britney Jean" (aside from Hold On Tight) I was worried about where Britney would go as it seemed she had lost the spark that made me fall head over heels in love with her however when I heard "Make Me..." for the first time all my fears vanished, it was a dreamy sexy masterpiece with Britney sounding truly wonderful and passionate, something I don't think she had been for half a decade, when the album dropped i fell in love with every song. The lyrics were relatable hopeful and a had a strange charm that felt unique to Britney the production was simply beautiful and very forward thinking, and Britney's voice had found its sparkle agian as she sounds emotive, passionate and engaged on every song. 2016 was a rough year for me (espically the latter half) but this album made me forget my troubles for a while, and lifted my spirts and gave a sense of strength and hope when I really needed it. You can really tell that Britney poured her heart into this album and wanted to make people listening to it feel empowerd and confident and for me she truly succeeded in that.
    2. GLA - Twin Atlantic [No Sleep, Overthinking, Ex El] now I know this isn't a very popjustice friendly album but I just love it. It's a messy, rough around the edges, emotive yet defiant middle finger to the world. This is exactly what Sky's excellent Night Time,My Time would sound like if it was created by a bunch of men form Glasgow. In the end it's an excellent yet aggressive and wild take on pop-rock that really works.
    3. BANKS - The Altar [27 Hours, Poltigurst, Mind Games] BANKS once agian has created a dark mysterious and enchanting musical world, fronted by her husky growly vocals and oddly relatable lyrics, while there is nothing as huge as Brain here there are lots of great moments and I can't wait to see her live in March.
    4. The 1975 - I Like It When You... [ The Ballad Of Me and My Brain, If I Believe You, Nana] I can't help but love everything about this album, I love the strange dreamy and reckless journey it takes you on and I find the lyrics almost painfully relatable at points, this album really helped me get past some of my darkest moments this year.
    5. Carly Rae Jepsen - E.MO.TION Side B [Cry, Higher, Roses] my faveourite popstar gifted us with 8 charming and brilliant pop songs this year, the gay abandon of "Higher" really gets me going and the epic ballads "Cry" and "Roses" feel like a delightful punch in the heart. I can't wait to see what Carly serves up next as I have no doubt it will be brilliant.
    6. NAO - For All We Know [Blue Wine, In The Morning, Feels Like (Perfume)] I love the blending of some of my faveourite genres on this album and NAO'S excellent and enchanting voice just does things to me. I just love the musicial universe this album creates and even though it has a few low moments, it has mighty highs.
    7. Zayn - Mind Of Mine [Rear View, Blue, Its You] Now it took me a while to discover this album as I hated everything about One Direction but I'm so glad I discoverd it. Zayn's voice really pulls me in and I love the mix of early 2000's R&B and dreamy ethereal electronica and the lyrics are beautifully written and really get to me. This album also helped me through some of my darker moments this year.
    8. JoJo - Mad Love [Music, Reckless, I Am] I grew up loving JoJo so I was so exicted when she successfully came back with this album after all the bullshit she had to go through. I love all the songs on this album and the variety of emotions and genres JoJo can effortlessly touch. The production is really slick and she is a truly great songwriter and I'm so happy she gave us this terrfic album.
    9. A Seat At The Table - Solange [Cranes In The Sky, Scales, Don't Wish Me Well] I love the kind of dreamy soul this album is and the tale in the lyrics, "Cranes" really got to me as I summed up how I was living my life. And the theme of moving on and self care really resenated with me.
    10. Superwoman - Rebecca Ferguson [Hold Me, I'll Meet You There, Waiting For Me] I love every one of Rebecca's albums (well apart from the covers one) and this is no exception, Rebecca's voice is just lovely and her lyrics really helped me get through some of those dark times and though quite simple the production really works. HOUNRABLE MENTIONS: Familia - Sophie Ellis Bextor, The Suffers - The Suffers, No.95 - Laura White, Not To Disappear - Daughter, All I Need - Foxes.
  15. I'm so glad that so many of y'all have posted your lists this time around. This is legitimately one of my favourite threads to unofficially helm every year and it makes me really happy going through and reading them all, knowing that you all agonise and take time and genuine care over them and ultimately share them with us xx

    Oh and @beyoncésweave it's 2017 hen.
