Best of 2018... Year End

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by NecessaryVoodoo, Nov 20, 2018.

  1. Add Tinashe's "Throw a Fit" to this somewhere as I've been playing the hell out of it lately.

  2. Going to need to really sit and think about songs, but Top 10 albums (in order)

    Mariah Carey - Caution
    Christina Aguilera - Liberation
    Lily Allen - No Shame
    Robyn - Honey
Years & Years - Palo Santo
    Little Mix - LM5
    Rita Ora - Phoenix
    Ariana Grande - Sweetener
    Shawn Mendes - Shawn Mendes
    MNEK - Language

Albums I really like despite the forum hating: Camila, Golden, Icarus Falls, 5SOS - Youngblood.

  3. Honestly I didn't like many albums this year. Even those which I was waiting for were kind of a let down (Ariana and Florence... ugh).
There were some good songs though:
    1. breathin by Ariana Grande
    2. High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco
    3. Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne
    4. Vulcano by Francesca Michielin
    5. Solo by Clean Bandit
    6. I Like It by Cardi B
    7. Zero stare sereno by Thegironalisti
    8. Hi High by LOONA
    9. Fuego by Eleni Foureira

    13. Fickle Friends - You Are Someone Else
    12. Hater - Siesta
    11. Ralph - A Good Girl

    10. Lily Allen - No Shame
I think we were all a bit worried about the future of Lily, thankfully No Shame is a complete triumph. While Lily's earlier work had a cocky charm about them, on No Shame the sincerity is turned up to 11, I haven't heard an album as shockingly confessional in a long time. Lily remains a fighter and she'll throw just as many punches as she will rip out your heartstrings.

    9. The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships
It's funny seeing some of the music press finally give in to the band's charm. They may not be perfect (and this album is faaar from it), but it's so ridiculous you can't help but crack a smile at some of the results we ended up with. The success rate has somewhat dropped, but the ambition is still just as strong, we can but hope they will only keep pushing themselves.

    8. Hayley Kiyoko - Expectations
Expectations is the result of years of honing her craft, a hyper focused debut that is full to the brim with hooks and feelings that still have me coming back to it 9 months later. There's nothing particularly new or exciting about the album but to see a 'new' act able to put out such a fully realised project and thrive off it is reward enough.

    7. The Aces - When My Heart Felt Volcanic
I feel like the world's almost moved on from indie bands putting out hook-laden albums, it's not enough for a band to just put out a bunch of catchy as hell tracks filled with singalong choruses - so sadly that left The Aces in a bit of trouble, they're 'basic' in a sense, but if you're after a quality guitar-pop album harking back to debut era HAIM, you won't regret giving this a go.

    6. Elohim - Elohim
See above but replace guitar with cheap EDM sounds. Elohim is basically your typical dark alt-pop girl from 5 years ago (think a budget version of The Altar by Banks), and I'll forgive her for that because Spotify tells me 4 of my 5 favourite songs of the year come from this album. It's patchy but the highs are honestly incredible.

    5. Hop Along - Bark Your Head Off, Dog
No album has grown on me quite so hard as this one. Hop Along hone in on their songwriting, by slowing things down they no longer rely too heavily on that energy to carry the song, guitars are less prominent allowing harps and violins to give depth. Francis remains one of the most unique voices in indie rock, and this more polished sound really gives her a chance to be heard.

    4. LUMP - LUMP
I'll admit that I got a bit tired of recent Laura albums, the quality is there but the differences between albums have come to shrink somewhat. Hearing that Laura was taking part in a new project, one that veered towards a more electronic sound got me so excited, and it paid off. Laura hasn't sounded as energised in a long time, and despite it only being 6 tracks long, they're all fully realised and give a glimpse at what an incredible future this project could have. Don't let this be the only album, please.

    3. Tove Styrke - Sway
Kiddo was an immaculate pop album, it's maximalist approach gave it plenty of personality and left me waiting for more. Someone must have seen what we saw because the lead up to Sway felt like there was a much bigger push than there ever was with Kiddo, but the sound had disappeared. The kitchen sink songwriting of the previous had been stripped back majorly, but thankfully Tove ensured the personality was still there. The tracks knock and the little production curve-balls scattered throughout really made it stand out for me this year, it's a short journey but once it was over I was already hovering over the play button again.

    2. Foxing - Nearer My God
This might put you off or get you interested, but remember The Black Parade? My Chemical Romance's third album introduced the band to a whole new dimension, it cherry picked the best from outside genres to blend them all together into this incredible, pompous musical theatre. Nearer My God is Foxing's third album too, and it's ambitions are just as bold, the band almost collapsing into themselves, but in the end result we have this wonderful body of work. Emo, prog-rock, indie rock, even some kinda cool moody electronics that you would've heard from this years album by The National. Nearer My God is the sound of a band aiming for the stars but shooting themselves out of the fucking universe.

    1. Let's Eat Grandma - I'm All Ears
I wrote a kinda crummy review on this for the advent calendar, but it's heady mix of thumping synths and dance beats had me smitten from first listen, it's odd to hear an album so huge and ambitious at the same time as feeling so carefree, but I'm All Ears made it all sound so effortless. The songs morph and shapeshift throughout, there may be weak moments on the album, but there definitely aren't any weak songs. Whew, their minds.

  12. 2018 SONGS

    01 = Camila Cabello - Something's Gotta Give
Yeah, I need to explain this; in short: It tells a story I cannot bring up to say myself. I am in tears typing this, but they need to get out. I am healing due to the strength of this song. Due this massive emotional vocal performance. And that post-chorus is literally the final push to make a tear start rolling down. Listening to this when I am going to work, makes me stop walking. It makes the world stop. It makes me think back. It makes me finding peace in the choice I made. It heals me. This song is a medicine for a pain I didn't know I had, because my mind completely made that pain numb. Below the spoiler more details:
First, let me make a shout out to the amazing reference to November Rain from Gun's and Roses. Not only in lyrics, but also in musical theme. Absolutely amazing. Girl is stanning talent.

Okay, but why is this my 2018 fave? Listening to this takes me back to my first boyfriend. He was my best friend for 6 years before that. Going from a close friendship into a love relationship was a mistake in hindsight. We were toxic towards each other and it basically destroyed the friendship in the process. Though we had it all. Good contacts with each other's family and friends. We were living the good life on the money side. But for some reason there never was an interest in each other that grew steadily. We drifted apart. We started arguing for nothing. We saw the things in each other we didn't like. Empathising on them and completely losing out of sight what brought us together. I ended the love relationship. I simply couldn't be in the relationship anymore. "No reason to stay is a good reason to go". Holy shit. This line! It was exactly how I started to feel in time. But it still took time. We still are in good contact with an occassional catch up moment, but it never got back to how it was before (and never will be either). And when we meet up, conversations get more superficial as time passes by.

    02 Christina Aguilera – Maria
03 Ariana Grande – No Tears Left To Cry
04 Toni Braxton – Long As I Live
05 Kendrick Lamar (Feat. SZA) – All The Stars
06 Kylie Minogue (Feat. Gente de Zona) – Stop Me From Falling (Remix)
07 Kelly Clarkson – Never Enough
08 Mariah Carey (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign) – The Distance
09 Janet Jackson – Made For Now
10 En Vogue – So Serious

Want to see a theme for my top 10 mostly? It is the return of several queens after musical absense for several years. Phew I was not ready for Toni and Mariah literally doing that and Christina actually releasing this year.

    11 Céline Dion – Ashes
    12 CupcakKe – Crayons
13 Janelle Monáe – Django Jane
14 Bruno Mars (Feat. Cardi B) – Finesse (Remix)
    15 Snow Patrol – Don’t Give In
16 Janice – You Only Say You Love Me
    17 Kerri Watt – Never
18 Zacari (Feat. Babes Wodumo) – Redemption
19 Shawn Mendes – Where Were You In The Morning
20 Carrie Underwood – Love Wins

Urban is definitely as a main genre reigning supreme in my charts towards the end of this decade. Though Snow Patrol, Janice, Carrie, Kerri and Shawn make it a bit more eclectic.

    21 HAEVN – The Sea
22 Fall Out Boy – Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)
23 Brandi Carlile – Every Time I Hear That Song
24 Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – Shallow
25 Kelela & Friends – LMK (What’s Really Good Remix)
26 Nadine Coyle – September Song
27 Childish Gambino – This Is America
    28 Eleni Foureira – Fuego
29 Laura Pausini – Ill Corragio Di Andare
    30 Kacey Musgraves – Happy & Sad

It was a powerful Eurovision year, though the chart is not entirely reflecting that. Simply because it is completely washed over by the other goods this year brought.

    31 The Carters – APESHIT
32 Khalid (Feat. Normani) – Love Lies
33 Amy MacDonald – Women of the World
34 Avril Lavigne – Head Above Water
35 Rita Ora – For You
36 Tamia – Leave It Smokin’
37 Marsha Ambrosius – Old Times
    38 EXID – Lady
39 Masego (Feat. Tiffany Gouché) – Queen Tings
40 Eminem (Feat. Alicia Keys) – Like Home

A lot of new artists in this batch. Hoping they can become new big faves in the future.

    2018 ALBUMS

    01 = Tom Misch - Geography
A cultural reflexive influence is what pours through on Geography. It is a hybrid of genres coming from all around the world. Instead of making them clash they are unified into one. More on this here: click.

02 Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour
03 Various Artists – Love, Simon OST
    04 Toni Braxton – Sex & Cigarettes
05 Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born OST
06 Laura Pausini – Fatti Sentire
07 Various Artists – Black Panther OST
    08 Fall Out Boy – M A N I A
09 The Carters – Love Is Everything
    10 Mariah Carey – Caution

With three soundtracks in the top 10 this is clearly a good year in music. Especially with the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack on high rotation still. Also Kacey literally releasing the album of her life. After Miranda pulled out all stops with The Weight of These Wings I was not ready for an other country queen doing the same so shortly after it.

    11 Christina Aguilera – Liberation
12 En Vogue – Electric Café
13 Brandi Carlile – By The Way, I Forgive You
    14 Kylie Minogue – Golden
    15 Ariana Grande – Sweetener
16 Shawn Mendes – Shawn Mendes
17 Everything is Recorded – Everything is Recorded
18 Nadine Coyle – NADINE EP
    19 Editors – Violence
    20 All Saints – Testament

The ladies are reigning supreme and this is such a diversed batch of songs, showcasing basically everybody brought it in 2018.

    2018 VIDEOS

    01 = Childish Gambino
What a fucking impact. And such relevance too in my profession as a geography teacher. When teaching about the social and cultural structures from societies this music video is a great medium to showcase exactly that. It also makes my pupils reflective about their own position in society.

    02 The Carters – APESHIT
The classiness, visuals and sophestication of it all. It is a music video only they can pull off believeably. Like with, This Is America, I am seeing new things with every time watching.

    03 Janelle Monáe – Pynk
Janelle Monáe sadly missed my album top 20 by an inch, but she was a force in several factors. I literally could have picked any other music video too, to make this list. But this, with that dress is taking the cake.

    03 Drake – God’s Plan
I mean... fuck. I am no fan of Drake whatsoever. But this music video is exceptional. It moved me so hard the first time I watched this. It actually manages to be not pretentious and geniune. Well fucking done.

05 Ariana Grande – God Is A Woman
This was a toss up between God Is A Woman and No Tears Left To Cry (with the latter having that wig-snatching intro), it was basically like this: No Tears Left To Cry made the singles list, so let God Is A Woman have this one. I also adored the Thank U, Next video a lot. Queen was serving.

  13. Songs 30-14 (because my Top 12 is a step above the rest and not just the top 10)

P.S. - Check out the obscure song "It's Late" by A Beacon School. Reminds me of Sufjan Stevens is it's pretty, sadboy dreamscape.

    13. Beach House – “Dive”
    14. Rosalía – “Que no salga la luna”
    15. Florence + the Machine – “South London Forever”

Top 5 songs of the year:

#1 Marsha Ambrosius - Old Times
The heart-wrenching #BlackLivesMatter ballad I didn’t know I needed in 2018. “...’cause right now I’m afraid to see the news / Another name, it could be you...”

    #2 Louisa featuring 2 Chainz - Yes
Louisa Johnson’s bops never got the success they deserved, and this outright banger was particularly underrated. It’s a shame we never got an album... or even an official release of the version without 2 Chainz rapping about Hurricane Maria.

#3 Aitana & Ana Guerra - Lo Malo
Two finalists from a Spanish talent contest tried and failed to enter Eurovision with this... and got a huge hit in Spain with it instead. Both Aitana and Ana have gone on to release great solo singles, but this kiss-off to bad boys remains a highlight of the year. (Thanks to @NecessaryVoodoo for running the Alt-Eurovizh rate earlier this year, which is where I found this bop.)

    #4 MNEK - Body
The producer and songwriter to the stars released an excellent album of his own this year, and this ode to first times was the highlight for me.

    #5 Saara Aalto - Monsters
The forum rightly latched onto Eleni Foureira’s Fuego as a Eurovision highlight this year, but this dark-pop banger deserved much more love than it got... especially with Saara’s excellent live performance of it at the final.

Here’s a Spotify playlist of my top 50:

Thanks to all the people who introduced me to my favourites in 2018, and a happy new year!
