Best of 2019... Year End

  1. we are the weirdos, mister

How has 2019 been for you, musically speaking?
Personally, I feel like it's been an embarrassment of riches alberms wise with the returns of, amongst others; Weyes Blood, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen and FKA twigs all delivering career bests (so far) along with impressive solo efforts from Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Rebecca Taylor (Slow Club) and Ioanna Gika (Io Echo). Add in debut releases from the likes of Orville Peck, Kelsey Lu, Mahmood, The Japanese House and Sudan Archives and 2019 ends up being probably one of the best years of the decade for me.

And what about the rest of you??? The end of the year is looming, so get those best of lists ready to post and...

  20. Top 10 Albums Of 2019:

    1. Shura - Forevher

This was the easiest decision for me. Shura's first album Nothing's Real was one of the best pop albums of 2016 and for many of us expectations for the followup were high. But she not only surpassed her debut, she surpassed all other albums of 2019. It's unashamedly queer pop. It's immersive, melancholic, funky, erotic and intelligent.

    2. Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?

I was quite late in discovering Billie, at least on this forum. I had seen users with her images as avatars and I had heard of her EP. But it wasn't until I saw the video for 'When The Party's Over' randomly earlier this year and I was so moved by the whole visuals with the gorgeous piano/vocals, that I wanted to know more. Her album was coincidentally released a fortnight later and I managed to get both it and her EP as a bundle, the rest is history...

Highlights: 'When The Party's Over', 'I Love You', 'Xanny', 'ilomilo'

    3. FKA Twigs - Magdalene

Now this album was a tough placing for me, I was fighting the idea that such a recent release could be ahead of so many albums that have been out months, but then I realised it's such a strong album and I'm loving it with each listen, that it deserves it's spot. As an artist and performer Twigs is above all other acts this year, her lyricism on this album is outstanding, the vocals are almost alien in their beauty, the production is unlike anything else and the aesthetics are undeniable. Not enough superlatives for her.

Highlights: ''Cellophane', 'Home With You', 'Mary Magdalene', 'Daybed'

    4. Madonna - Madame X

Mirwais getting back in the fold with Madge was always going to be a treat, especially for those of us that held American Life up as their best work together. Nearly four decades in the music industry, Madonna is still pushing boundaries and getting people's backs up, she raises awareness for issues that need to be spoken about, and she questions and prods the dickheads in power. Brilliant work.

Highlights: 'Killers Who Are Partying', 'God Control', 'Extreme Occident', 'Funana'

    5. Bat For Lashes - Lost Girls

I've been a fan of Bat For Lashes (Natasha Khan) for over a decade now and I've loved everything she's done. The direction of Lost Girls was not that surprising for me. I think after the disappointing reaction (from some fans) with the last album The Bride, Natasha wanted to remind people why they loved her work, and why they connected with her. She brought back the synths, the misty backdrops, filmic landscapes and the overtly 80's influences and made one of her strongest collection of songs to date, all inspired by the cult classic horror The Lost Boys.

Highlights: 'Peach Sky', 'Hunger', 'Safe Tonight', 'Desert Man'

    6. Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!

I've always said Lana has progressed and surpassed herself with each album, and NFR! is no exception. In fact I think this album took her from an artist, into an accomplished singer/songwriter. The lyrics read like poetry and her voice is stronger than ever. Give her that Grammy NOW!

Highlights: 'Cinnamon Girl', 'How To Disappear', 'Love Song', 'The Next Best American Record'

    7. Taylor Swift - Lover

As one of a small collective that got their life to the reputation era, I was really intrigued where Taylor would venture next with her music. Now I will say, this album took a little bit of time to really get under my skin, it still has three songs I don't like ('Paper Rings', 'London Boy' and 'ME!') but the other 15 tracks I think make up for it. I'm a sucker for the 80's synths, plus it has one of Taylor's best ever songs, the title track 'Lover'.

Highlights: 'Lover', 'Cornelia Street', 'Miss Americana And The Heartbreak Prince', 'Afterglow'

    8. Vampire Weekend - Father Of The Bride

Another long-awaited return happened this year with Vampire Weekend. Another act I've loved for years and would love to see live soon!
This double album is such an eclectic mix of styles, but it still sounds like Vampire Weekend and the guest vocals from the Haim gals really add something special.

Highlights: 'Harmony Hall', 'Sympathy', 'How Long?', 'We Belong Together'

    9. Dido - Still On My Mind

Dido finally returned to music this year, I've been a fan since 'Here With Me' was the theme to Roswell.
This album truly feels like a return to form and a return to Dido's dance beginnings. Love it.

Highlights: 'Walking By', 'Hurricanes', 'Friends', 'Take You Home'

    10. Muna - Saves The World

After their incredible debut album, it was always going to be a challenge to sustain that quality. But I think Muna may have surpassed it with this album. The aesthetics alone deserve huge love, but the music once again manages to be emotionally affecting but also euphoric and sensual. Makes me excited for whatever comes next!

Highlights: 'Hands-Off', 'Never', 'Stayaway', 'Navy Blue'

    Honorable mentions:
Bear's Den - So You Might Hear Me / Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles / Coldplay - Everyday Life

    Top 5 Songs Of 2019:

    1. Taylor Swift - 'Lover'

So she didn't top my best of albums, but I had to crown this song #1 here. Yes, it's everything predictable for a ballad and yes it sounds like a Mazzy Star cover. But I don't care. It's gorgeous in every single way. ...except when Shawn Mendes sings it.

    2. Katy Perry - 'Never Really Over'

Surely one of the most underrated pop singles of the last few years. It's one of Katy's best, with one of the catchiest, most clever choruses of 2019.

    3. Bear's Den - 'Crow'

I've been a fan of Bear's Den for a while, their most recent album again was a collection of gorgeous little songs. Including one of the most moving songs I've ever heard, the single 'Crow'. I can't listen to it without getting teary.

    4. FKA Twigs - 'Cellophane'

Now I knew this song would be on this list back when I saw the video to 'Cellophane'. The song is like a punch in the gut, Twigs is literally crying her vocals out and they sound... beautiful? It's such an odd sensation when listening, almost intrusive? But WOW.

    5. Shura - 'Princess Leia'

To pick one song from my album of 2019 was a tough ask, but I narrowed it down to two. This and 'Tommy'. Both move me so much, but 'Princess Leia' is just something else. It really touches me.
