Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by NecessaryVoodoo, Nov 19, 2019.

    1. Tool - Fear Inoculum

    (...)
Age old battle, mine. Weapon out and belly in.
Tales told of battles won, of things we’ve done, Caligula would grin.
Beating tired bones. Tripping through remember when.
Once invincible. Now the armor’s wearing thin.
Heavy shield down. Warrior struggling to remain relevant.
    Warrior struggling to remain consequential.

Bellow aloud, bold and proud, of where I’ve been.
But here I am, where I end.

Tears in my eyes chasing Ponce de Leon’s phantoms.
So filled with hope I can taste mythical fountains.
    False hope, perhaps,
But the truth never got in my way before now.
Feel the sting. Feeling time bearing down.
    (Invincible)

  5. ALBUMS
01 Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell
The emotion in her voice on every track is elevated by the pristine production and lyrical depth. This is a painfull rollercoaster of emotions you get hooked on.

02 Yola - Walk Through Fire
She had a massive breakout year with me. The blend of country and soul is a matchmade in heaven especially with Dan Auerbach behind the production and the voice of this amazing woman.

03 Beyoncé - The Lion King: The Gift
Disney and Beyoncé are a match that sounds even better in real life than on paper. There is nostalgia feel combined with addressing social issues that somehow make sense. Truly a gift for everyone.

    04 Lizzo - Cuz I Love You
WHEW. What a YEAR this has been. We still need to recover from the full force Lizzo brought on this year. The album is just bop after bop and a song after my first name (Jerome), we decided to stan forever.

    05 Madonna - Madama X
Madonna has not been in a year top 10 for me (let alone a top 5) since Confessions on the Dancefloor. This is not only a return to form, but also a clear showcase to her much younger peers how it's done.

    06 Solange - When I Get Home
Is there something this queen can't do? After the brilliance of A Seat At The Table she follows up it with an equally important and significant body of work. Topped all off with amazing performances this era ánd an album visual. Talent.

07 Gary Clark Jr. - This Land
This is a bit of a weird inclusion as it is a bit of a mixed bag (hit and miss), but honestly the hits are so big a placement among the best 10 is a necessity. Culturally relevant and musically his strongest ever.

08 Dido - Still On My Mind
Suddenly there was the return of Dido. And it actually was a massive comeback for me. She found her mojo back and got on the hype train of atmospheric bops, but still making sure it has her identity. Amazing.

09 The Highwomen - The Highwomen
A supergroup containing country women kicking against society. This sounds more than fan fiction, than reality so consider me in a dreamstate still.

10 Mark Ronson - Late Night Feelings
Mark is simply showcasing what he can do best. I mean who else brings so many talented women on one album and puts so much effort in the production?

    SONGS
01 Yola - Lonely The Night
There was no competition. In fact I have a one artist rule, but if it wasn't queen Yola would have been #1 and #2. The last time this happened for me was with Lana Del Rey. Can she become as big for me? I am shook.

02 Lana Del Rey - Cinnamon Girl
Speaking of Lana Del Rey, queen of this decade, did she really breakout in the start of the decade and literally brought her opus when I am already a full stan. I was not worthy.

03 Lizzo - Tempo (feat. Missy Elliott)
A breakout star and a grand comeback. In one massive bop. I was not ready for so much greatness.

    04 Duncan Lawrence - Arcade
This honestly has been a massive Eurovision year and that was already written in the clouds before the Netherlands would win this. The icing on the cake.

    05 Normani - Motivation
This was a year of female black excellence breaking out and claiming thrones left and right. To bad the general public was not here for it all together. We want more Normani. I need more of this.

    06 Mahmood - Soldi
07 Taylor Swift - False God
    08 Beyoncé - MY POWER
    09 Madonna - God Control
10 A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera - Fall On Me

11 MARINA - End of the Earth
12 Solange - Sound of Rain
    13 Maruv - Siren Song
14 Melissa Etheridge - The Medicine Show
15 Gary Clark Jr. - Pearl Cadillac

    16 India.Arie - What If
17 Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love
18 The Cranberries - All Over Now
    19 The Highwomen - Highwomen
    20 DJ Spoony & Sugababes - Flowers

21 Ashanti - Pretty Little Thing
22 Sufjan Stevens - Love Yourself
23 Arty - Save Me Tonight
    24 Mandy Moore - When I Wasn't Watching
25 Beth Hart - Bad Woman Blues

    EP
    01 Missy Elliott - Iconology
    02 Lil Nas X - 7 EP
    03 Aly & AJ - Sanctuary

  7. I LOVE putting together my year-end list of best singles, but this year it was particularly difficult because not a long of songs stood out to me. I think because my taste has widened even further, it's harder to pinpoint the best of the best. Instead, I just narrowed things down to the songs that keep surprising me and staying with me after each listen.

Anyway, here are my favorite songs of 2019 ...

    20- Maggie Rogers- Say It
    19- Gallant- Sharpest Edges
    18- Ari Lennox- BMO
    17- Niia- Whatever You Got
    16- Shay Lia- Voodoo

    15- Kali Uchis- Solita
    14- Kiana Ledé- EX
13- Katy Perry- Harleys in Hawaii
    12- Broods- Too Proud
    11- Amber Mark- Mixer

    10- Tinashe- Perfect Crime
    9- Rainsford- Passionate
    8- BANKS- Hawaiian Mazes
7- Mabel- Don’t Call Me Up
    6- Moss Kena- Be Mine

    5- Bree Runway- All Night
4- Local Natives- When Am I Gonna Lose You
3- Friendly Fires- Heaven Let Me In
2- Emotional Oranges- Unless You’re Drowning
    1- SHAED- ISOU

    A few notes:
    - Ending my year in Hawaii, so cute to see two songs with that in the title;
    - I started DJing this year, I have made 4 mixes by now, and it's been interesting to see music and song construction from a completely new perspective. More and more of this in 2020
    - Shura almost made the list with a few songs, forevher is probably my favorite album of 2019, but as much as I love it as a whole, I couldn't single out a song for this list
