Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (The Winner)

Re: Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (32-5)

You did give the whole top 5 a score of ten Robsolete!

Haha I know, but they all deserved it! I was generous, but with songs this good what can you do? The good thing about that is that I'll be super happy whatever wins.

I would have had no issues with Before He Cheats winning, but my 11 is still alive. Did I really say pizzazz? Mortified.

Re: Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (32-5)

So glad to see Kacey doing so well. I thought she had a shot at top 10, never imagined she'd finish in the final four!

Man! I Feel Like A Woman can exit now, after that I honestly don't care what wins.

4. Merry Go Round - Kacey Musgraves
Merry_go_'round.jpg

Score: 8.78
Highest Score: 11 (Laura Vanderbooben and KamikazeHeart)
Lowest Score: 2 (Markus)
Best Bit: If ain't got two kids by twenty one your probably gonna die alone at least that's what tradition told ya

The song won the Grammy for 2013 for Best Country Song. Compared to many of the winners here this song didn't find as much success only reaching 14 on the country charts but it did go platinum. I didn't know this until know but Kacey actually got her start on the talent show Nashville Star (where Miranda Lambert came from). She got her first success writing Mama's Broken Heart for Miranda too. Speaking of the song Musgrave said "We all grow up with expectation of breaking the cycle of life as we know it, trying to appear as if all is perfect under the surface." and "our comfort zone always makes us settle and I think there's hope in knowing everyone has felt this way". The album title comes from this song and I almost put it as the best bit same hurt in every heart, same trailer different park.

Our two 11's gave some great commentary for this one.

KamikazeHeart wrote "When people ask me what my favorite songs of all time are, this is usually among the first ones to pop up in my head. Such brilliant, brilliant songwriting. This song manages to be so many things at the same time: nostalgic, funny, sad, clever. It’s such a bittersweet song, and it’s sung so… preciously. You can tell Kacey cares for the song itself just as much as the people she’s singing about. The broken dreams and broken hearts she’s singing about. Always brings a tear to my eye - and a slight smile to my lips."

Laura Vanderbooben said "Not Kacey making me stan for a country artist and suddenly feel country as shit as she describes my hometown. I was in my best friend’s wedding at the age of 24 and was not only the only unmarried member of the entire wedding party, but also the second oldest. Love it, love her, can’t wait to see what she does next. A deserved winner. Fantastic lyricism. (I’m still mad she didn’t open my Prismatic tour date.)"

This song actually took a while to grow on. It might be because I grew up on in small rural town but had a different completely different experience coming from one in north east compared to mid-west/south. Epic Chocolat stated that he liked Follow Your Arrow more. Unnameable also enjoyed the lyrics "I love the expression "same trailer, different park". I probably shouldn't listen to the lyrics as closely as I do, or it'll fuel my depression" Robsolete continued the love for lyrics and stated he thinks Kacey could be absolutely huge in a few years. Lost In Japan said her album is fantastic, and the song is well written and he loved her delivery. DJ Hazey wrote that a lot of the lines made him chuckle or smile and found the song very endearing.

What did it beat?
Mama's Broken Heart - Miranda Lambert
I Drive Your Truck - Lee Brice
Begin Again - Taylor Swift
Mine Would Be You - Blake Shelton

This is a fantastic list of songs all of which ended up in my top 40 songs of that year. Begin Again is my favorite Taylor Swift song so I was always going to choose that one but it's also a lot more personal for me too.

Re: Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (32-8)

What did this beat?
If I Die Young - The Band Perry
The House That Built Me - Miranda Lambert
I'd Love to be Your Last - Gretchen Wilson
Free - Zac Brown Band

Poor Band Perry, not only do they have the most talented Katherine Perry in music fronting their band, but they had to compete against Lady Antebellum at their best and Miranda singing her signature tune. Great year for country, harsh year to be a breakthrough act.

Re: Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (32-4)

Amazing (but deserved) that Kacey made it so far, considering she doesn't seem to have that much of a fanbase on here.

Your attempt at shading Katy Perry is nullified by you not knowing Kimberly Perry's name. Tsk tsk!

Also high fives for great taste, KamikazeHeart!

Re: Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (32-4)

The Top 5 we had was flawless and I wouldn't have minded any of the songs winning. I'm glad Kacey made it this far at least.

My personal preference:
1. Blown Away
2. You're Still the One
3. Man I Feel Like a Woman

Re: Best of Country: Grammy Winners Song Rate (32-4)

You're Still the One is my 11, but any of these three are derserving. I gave the other two a 9.5 and "Blown Away" was my discovery of the rate.

3. Man I Feel Like A Woman - Shania Twain

Score: 9.53
Highest Score: 11 (FIre)
Lowest Score: 8.5 (Mister Unicorn) The highest lowest score.
Best Bit: The best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun

Man I Feel Like A Woman won the Grammy for Best Female Vocal in 2000. The song was the 7th single from the album Come On Over. It reached number 4 on the country charts, and 23 on the Hot 100. The song found international success too going top 5 in the UK, Australia, and France. The music video is one of her most remembered for switching the roles of Robert Palmer's addicted to love. The song continued Shania's trend of female empowerment songs. The song is featured in Britney Spears' movie Crossroads.

Come On Over is my favorite album of the time and while this isn't necessarily one of my biggest favorites from it's still so infectious and fun. The song is undeniable. I was just talking to Fire a few days ago about how great of an idea the music video was. The Come On Over campaign was so effortless and perfect.

Our 11 point giver didn't send in any commentary but I can only assume that Shania is his favorite country singer!

Laura Vanderbooben wrote "This is a fucking jam with one truly iconic title. I mean, this is a POP song, it’s absolutely nothing but hooks, but I’m not about to complain. Mutt at his absolute best. (Great video, too.)" KamikazeHeart continued the loved with "Genuinely one of the most entertaining songs ever - although not particularly country in my book. I’ve heard it once in a gay club, and the entire dance floor went absolutely crazy." Robsolete also commented on the great video and called it a proper classic. Unnmaebale asked how does Shania do it (those song titles I mean!). Lost In Japan simply said "YASSSSS SHANIA YASSSSS". haha! DJ Hazey wrote " I'll admit I loved the heck out of this song is high school, bopped to it openly, and got the side eye. It's definitely one of the songs on the soundtrack of my youth." Epic Chocolat continued the love with Fun, truthful, original theme in the country genre. Perfect to walk in a steady and dancy pace. Tested and approved.

What did it beat?
Martina McBride - I Love You
Faith Hill - Let Me Let Go
Alison Krauss - Forget About It
Emmylou Harris - Ordinary Heart

1999 was such a great year for both pop and country music.

I'm inclined to agree. It's cool that we have a song from early part of this competition going against a newer one.

I'm going to try to have the final results tonight!

1. You're Still The One
You're_Still_the_One_Single_Cover.jpg

Score: 9.60
Highest Score: 11 (DJ Hazey & MollieSwift)
Lowest Score: 8 (Fire)
Best Bit: I'm so glad we made look how far we've come, my baby

The song won the Grammy for best Country Song and Best Female Vocal in 1999. It was additionally nominated and robbed of Record of the Year and Song of The Year. The song went number one on the country charts and spent 22 weeks atop the country singles sale. The song found massive cross over success reaching number 2 for 9 weeks and went on to become the 34th biggest song of the 90's and the 66th of all time. The reason it was unable to peak at #1 is the cd sales went beyond what was expected and places had run out of stock. The song became the first ever country song to be nominated for MTV award. It additionally was the first song the really kicked off the massive Come On Over album that allowed it to become the best selling female album of all time, the best selling country album, and the best selling in the US since the 90's.

The subject matter of the song dealt with the criticism of her and husband marriage. Many people criticized the relationship and accused Shania of using Mutt to further her career. Twain and Lange spoke about how they didn't intended to write the song about themselves but that is just how it turned out. As many know Shania and Mutt have since divorced after 17 years over Mutt cheating on her. In biography Shania wrote that "she still cherishes the song in souvenir of her deceased parents and truly believes that they were meant to be together and that, in spite of all the trials they have been through, her parents shared a very pure and true love."

I mentioned it early in the rate that my favorite song is in the competition and this is it. The song excels in the sincerity Shania has when she sings it. Her voice just has a warm quality to it that matched with the lyrics creates something beautiful. Especially her vocals at the end steel guitar solo conveys such emotion of being deeply in love and sense of triumph to them. As Shania stated early it's about a pure and true love. One of my favorite things about Country music is how the songwriting tells a very personal story but it allows everyone one to relate to the song.

DJ Hazey is now forgiven for killing off my favorite Keith songs and wrote "Shania, like this song, is completely genre-breaking. I loved this song as a kid. Even with such an iconic chorus, it's the verses and the way her voice rides that melody to heaven."

KamikazeHeart called it wedding song material. Unnameable wrote "there are few love songs as perfect as this" and considered giving this is 11. Laura Vanderbooen said Masterpiece of chorus. Obliterate me, Mutt. Robsolete called it one of his favorite ballads ever. Lost In Japan talked still suppressing memories of Cheryl's version. (It's kind of amazing to think Girls Aloud were formed off a singing competition). Epic Chocolat wrote "A great song for a wedding's first dance. The lyrics are bittersweet now but it's good to believe in love against all odds, still."

That means our runner up is

2. Blown Away - Carrie Underwood
Carrie_Underwood_-_Blown_Away_(single).png

Score: 9.57
Highest Score: 11 (CorgiCorgiCorgi, Mister Unicorn)
Lowest Score: 8 (Fire, Laura Vanderbooben, and Epic Chocolat)
Best Bit: Blown Awaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

The song won the Grammy for Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance in 2013. The cross-over hit that never was it still rose to number 20 on the Hot 100 and sold over 2 million copies. It found success on the country charts though going number 2 there and number 1 on airplay. I really do think if she would have released it to pop radio it would have gone down amazing and been ONE of those cross-over hits.

Underwood used this song as the direction for her fantastic album with the same title. The song first came about with the same pair that wrote Before He Cheats playing with effects and once they hit the thunder storm one the idea started to come to them. Underwood said going in the recording process that she wanted to try something different for the album and that the songs she recorded allowed her to be more dark and fierce. The music video features a Wizard of Oz theme to it. She's look beyond stunning through out it too.

CorgiCorgiCorgi had this to say about his 11 "There is NO REASON that this shouldn't win. It's more pop than country IMHO, but it's definitely the best song in the rate."

Blown Away is in the running for my favorite Carrie song. The first moment I heard it I thought it was going to be massive. The first four singles of the album is what dreams are made of.

Lost In Japan said it wasn't Carrie's best but it's pretty undeniable, her voice is a force of nature itself. Epic Chocolat called it a "Surprising sound for a country song. I like the production and as always the vocals are faultless." Laura Vanderbooben wrote " Carrie wiping the floor with the five boys in her category and laying me flat with her voice while she’s at it." Unnameable called it amazingly atmospheric. KamikazeHeart had a lot of good things to say about the track "Aptly titled song. This is so close to getting my 11, but alas. This is epic beyond belief - whenever I listen to this I’m stunned by how it’s even possible to write a song and make it so big without being over the top. Despite the huge production; there’s still a very fragile nerve at the heart of Carrie’s delivery". Robsolete said it was "One of her very best, should go down as a country classic." DJ Hazey called this one his big discovery of the rate and "That is one powerful piece of song-writing right there. Damn."

And there you go. Thank you everyone who participated and those who followed on along. I had a ton of fun doing this and am glad that people were able to discover some new songs and artists through out this!

Brilliant result. As I said, I'd have been happy with any of those songs winning, but it does seem fair that a legend like Shania takes it. Someone tweet her and tell her she's won, it might mean we get an album before 2020.

Amazing rate Mollie, thanks for doing it!

Thanks!

Plus Shania has said she is determine to have the new album come out when she is 50 which could still be a ways off as she turns 50 in August but it does give us at least a time frame which she has never done before it's always just been working on it.

Thanks for a brilliant rate Mollie! It's been nice being a part of a rate where the results happened as they should've happened (aside from The House That Built Me missing the Top 10 obviously).

Y**S! Mollie and I pushing our fav to victory! This chills I got when I hit play to that song for the first time in years were unfathomable.

I fully expected Blown Away to win this, so a shock result is a nice surprise - even if You're Still the One, beautiful as it is, is a favourite of mine in the rate. Y'all did Before He Cheats wrong, though... #5?! Let me get my Louisville Slugger and head to your parking garages.
