Beyoncé - act ii COWBOY CARTER

After the Oscars last night, I'm curious if we're on the verge of announcement of a remake of The Wiz and I wonder if she would do it? Film has been the one area she hasn't quite conquered like she wants to. She's had hit films but she's never quite been taken seriously as a big talent in that arena and she hasn't had the major award recognition for it (I think she got a Globe nomination for Dreamgirls?). It's not an age restrictive role, if I remember right. She's the obvious choice. I wonder if it's something she would be into. The Wiz holds a sort of interesting space because it's an iconic film but necessarily a beloved film.

Isn’t Dorothy a school teacher in The Wiz? It’s been ages since I’ve seen the movie but I’m seeing the stage show soon!
Yeah I'm sorry I edited my post. The stage musical stars a teenage Dorothy which was changed for the film because Diana wanted to do it.

For what it's worth, I think it's a brilliant idea. I have wanted to see The Wiz remade for ages and I love the songs in it, I think it just finished a run on Broadway. That said, I wonder if they would do it so close to Wicked.

I think the idea that Beyoncé wants to conquer the film industry, feels very stuck in the 2000s/Beyoncé 1.0.
A younger Beyoncé was incredibly determined to be a "legend in the making", but in 2025 my guess is that she is just reaping the rewards of her career and allowing herself to do projects that are creatively (and/or financially) fulfilling.

When it comes to her acting ability and audience perception, I think people judge her harshly because

1, her acting skills are not in the same tier as her musical skills
2, she is a once in a generation musical talent who has embedded the character/archetype of Beyonce the music performer into pop culture so thoroughly, that it is that much harder to achieve the basics of audience suspension of belief

I obviously am not Beyonce, nor do I know her thought process. But my guess is that she found the next level of fulfillment in acting by building her own worlds through Lemonade and Black Is King. Those works feature some of her best acting and bypass the problem of suspension of belief.

As far as would she do the role of The Wiz?
The answer feels like a solid maybe.
Do the schedules align? Is the directorial team and cast the right fit? Is the price right?
Does she feel like it lol?

Now this is a conversation to be had!

She’s really good in Dreamgirls but Deena was never an awards-bait role (Sheryl Lee Ralph gave a superlative performance of a role that wasn’t quite there on paper) - it has always been about Effie and that character is never a role that Beyonce could be considered for…

I don’t see her courting The Wiz (other than being Glinda) - Diana was a properly acclaimed actress (she still could be, make another movie Diana) and was dragged for being shoe-horned into the role - Beyonce has also spent 20 years eradicating Diana Ross comparisons so, tongue-in-cheek Dreamgirls role aside, I don’t see her doing that.

I completely agree that she will want to deliver an iconic movie performance though - I bet she has someone keeping tabs on every relevant movie script doing the rounds… at this point it will need to be something “revelatory” so we’d definitely be looking at a low-key, down-to-earth Ava DuVernay kind of project rather than a high-glitz, movie star Baz Luhrman kind of project I think…

Just saw this on my feed, and it seems relevant to the conversation of Beyoncé acting

just came across this in my feed . I Listened to it several times . This is still one of my favorite movies and it makes me miss the fact that my child decided not to continue with movies. She killed it in this movie.❤️ and she so unselfishly donated her salary to the Phoenix house❤️

he/him
I know voice acting is a different challenge but her work in The Lion King has put me off the idea of her venturing any further into acting although that did give us The Gift so… maybe I’m not totally against it!

This combined with @odyism post reminds me how… forceful Matthew was with his targets and achievements for her - post-4 we have no idea whether she gives a fuck (or ever felt strongly) about acting at all - my opinion is that it would be a shame because she is a MOVIE STAR through charisma alone and it would be nice to have a legitimate Best Actress citation for her… I’ll take Independent Spirit over Golden Globe for the “legacy” of it all…

Part of me is glad that she abandoned acting and decided to focus her energies on her music because the results are out of this world fantastic and I don't want to lose another fave to the popstar to movie star pipeline but... as you said she has such presence. I guess her visual albums were a nice compromise but we don't even get those anymore.
