I fear this is a classic in my books. If there's one thing K-Pop has been doing since its inception, it's fusing genres together than don't quite sound right together in theory, but in practice, work. There's many songs like this in the rate, just look at Rosalia's "SAOKO" which mixes jazz with reggeaton. In K-Pop, at least this year, they've been trying to incorporate classical music into the scene, and let's just say... it hasn't been working. In other songs, it's overbearing and clearly does not mesh with the song. In "Shut Down", the song perfectly blends the sample into this delicious beat that's so smooth and suits the girls so well.
This is the thing that really strikes me about the song. BLACKPINK are known for these huge, bombastic choruses with horns and intense production... That's not what "Shut Down" is doing. It subverts what a BLACKPINK song normally is, steering away from the formula, and instead doing something more exciting. It's more downbeat than normal, but it still packs a punch.
The music video is a blast from the past, seeing BLACKPINK recreate previous moments from their other iconic music videos. The company that owns BLACKPINK said that it's their most expensive video yet, but I don't quite see it. Still, it's brilliant! The choreography is also a ton of fun, but that's to be expected from a K-Pop group of their calibre.
BLACKPINK tend to blend hip hop into their songs with some questionable moments, where it doesn't quite work, but here, it really works. All the girls sell the shit of their raps. The song just smacks front to back, feeling like a complete takeover of the senses. A smash I fear.
