On paper, a collaboration between Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama should be, at the very least, great. Particularly for myself, I love both artists separately. Despite my adoration for Taylor Swift's
folklore and
evermore, I'd say my favourite pandemic album remains being how I'm feeling now. Rina Sawayama is a phenomenal popstar who is on the cusp of immense success with two phenomenal albums under her belt. It just feels weird that this song came out the way it did. To me, it's just so... mediocre.
Before I dig into the track, there's a couple of things worth raising. The first part is that, while it is their first released collaboration, there was another one in the past. During the
Charli era, Rina Sawayama and Charli XCX worked on a collaboration that was meant to be on that album. It was ballad. They decided that they'd rather work together on something more upbeat and waited for the "right" moment. It was then when this song was sold to Charli and she decided it should be their collaboration.
The other bit is that the song samples September's iconic, single hit, "Cry For You". The song has gone viral many times, but it particularly peaked in popularity with a tweet referencing the an infamous disappearance of a child. "Cry For You" is actually a really solid pop song, particularly, the chorus. This is where my issue with "Beg For You" lies. The reason that "Cry For You" smacks is because of
that chorus. And fair enough, I think it can be adapted to the lyrics in this song, but the issue is that they lead to this boring ass drop that is so limp, it ruins the whole song.
I really think something like "Afterlife" should've been the blueprint for this. That, to me, remains one of the best songs Rina has ever done. On top of that, it suits Charli's sound so well. That would've been the obvious answer had it not been for this album where Charli is allegedly selling out. I guess it makes sense for it to be a bit devoid of much if she's essentially making an Ava Max album, but I digress.
There's just so much more that could've been done. It's just a bit disappointing all around. I'm not surprised this is going out now and I agree with it. I still play the song a lot since I did enjoy most of
CRASH and I'm the sort of person who listens to albums (as opposed to making playlists), but it feels like an outlier within
CRASH as well. It's just really bizarre.
