Y'all really think that The Great War, for example, is better than this?!
I don't care for "Mastermind" but outliving "The Great War"... what the fuck's going on???

"It turned into something bigger
Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I'd been betrayed
Your finger on my hairpin triggers
Soldier down on that icy ground
Looked up at me with honor and truth
Broken and blue, so I called off the troops
That was the night I nearly lost you
I really thought I'd lost you"

This fucking bridge is genuinely one of her best. I don't think we have any question about Taylor Swift being one of the greatest architects of our time simply because of these bridges. They tend to be the highlights in her songs, which isn't a surprise at this point. Some of my favourite songs from Taylor are those that take her brilliant bridges and smack them across the entire song. An amazing example of this being "Death By A Thousand Cuts" which is just a bunch of bridges stuck together into a masterpiece.

The rest of the song is literally a folklore or evermore deep cut, a b-side if you will. It's not necessary a bad thing, but it sticks out like a sore thumb within this album. It makes complete sense why it's been relegated to being a bonus track. The production on this is clearly Aaron Dessner having a bomb ass time with the drums and piano. Speaking of the drums, I adore how they sound like they're part of a marching band from the military. The layers, I guess?

I think the problem here is that it's a bit monotone at times. Taylor's delivery is as flat as the production lets it be. There's not a lot of flexibility there which is why the bridge hits the way it does. It's all this restrained energy from the previous minutes blowing up with Taylor singing in her higher register, steering away from the writing structure of the song as well.

I do really like this song, but I'm really surprised at it doing this well within the album ranking. I really thought this would've been one of the first outs from it. I genuinely didn't expect the Midnights ranking to shape the way it has with the eliminated songs. I guess you never know with the forum until all the songs are on the spreadsheet!

The next 10 songs out should be:

G3 N15
Cute
Aislamiento
Sakura
Maroon
Labyrinth
Midnight Rain
Bigger Than The Whole Sky
Saoko
Delirio De Grandeza

Ok what the fuck, I did not log on for a quick browse before bed just to get that one-two gut punch of losing a 9 and 10 back to back.

Mastermind is one of my favourites from Midnights, and I (naively?) expected it to do better. It’s a sociopathic bop and honestly most of the lyrics sound exactly like how I’d expect Taylor to pursue a man she really wanted ddd

@aux already mentioned it but the bridge of The Great War is one of her best and what made me almost score it a 10. It’s brilliant (and definitely better than some of the Charli and Rosalia songs that are left).
