And no one guessed the reveal correctly! Are you surprised? I find it really interesting that this failed to garner that many 10s, with most scores finding themselves around the 8 or 9 area. There's only a couple outliers that brought the score down to where it is now. I actually somewhat regret not giving it a full score because the melody is so infectious. I'll be intrigued if others feel similarly.
"Lavender Haze" is the opening track on Midnights. The song is a love song about two things - one of those, falling in love and forgetting all the noise around you; the other being about that noise around you. It's about falling in love amidst being a public figure and deciding whether to be open about it or not. The song is aware that no matter what she does, she's going to be analysed for it, and all that she wants is to be in love without worrying about that.
As an opening track, I think it does its job. It slowly indulges you into the soundscape of the album. It's poppier than the last two records. It's also slightly darker than the previous pop albums from Taylor. It's more sensual, intimate than other pop albums from her as well. It sets the tone and that's what a great opening track does. It's not just an "intro" like some other opening tracks.
The bridge is perfect. It's just what I want in a pop song, a catchy moment that takes you to the next and final chorus which just explodes. I know we talk about Taylor's bridges being generally brilliant, but this is one of those key ones in her discography. It just grabs me completely anytime I hear or even think about it.
The music video is also great and one of her best. It suits the track perfectly and has some brilliant set pieces. And speaking of brilliant set pieces! It's been translated perfectly to the stadium stage.
