BIG POP GIRLS 2022 - THE END

nn because it isn't technically a sample or even really an interpolation - the bass sound is the same but everything else about that part of the song isn't directly lifted from Show Me Love. I guess we have Robin Thicke to thank for that!

(Although it is nice that Robin S got some love from the writing credit so everyone wins)
Just another way Renaissance changed music for me

Used to Know Me is great, actually, but it shouldn't really have outlasted the past couple of cuts, so it getting cut is a smidge overdue. That said, the music video is a fucking serve and the live performances I've seen of it are all fire, seaux...

The hit single that got away...

"Yuck" is the tenth track on CRASH. If memory does not fail me, this was originally meant to be a single with a feature. I don't think we ever found out who was the feature, but I pray I never find out, because it would just make me sad. This song had so much potential and it was just... wasted.

As you'll know by know, I suffer from a disease called K-Pop. There was a whole debate over how K-Pop groups will have amazing songs as b-sides and just never do anything with them: no performances, nothing, nada. At least with Western artists, and the constant touring cycle, most songs tend to get an outing live. Still, despite all the performances of "Yuck" we got with the never ending CRASH tour, this song feels like it was waiting for the right moment, a lil' summer single with a feature and some remixes and you've got it!

I don't know, I think Charli XCX is just on the cusp of really breaking out, like, properly. She's already a known name among pop music fiends and queers (these often intersect), and this era was her biggest success ever, but there's always scope for more. CRASH was the beginning of this. I saw it firsthand, with the so-called "locals", openly engaging with her music. Plenty of straight acquaintances who tend to listen to the most straight-pandering music, were talking about CRASH and even revisiting her other catalogue. I'm not sure what's doing that, but I feel like "Yuck" as a single maybe would've pushed it a bit more.

As for the song itself, it smacks. The chorus is undeniable. Charli XCX just knows how to deliver a song. She sounds frustrated in the song because she's falling in love for someone. And it works! It fucking works. The rhyming of "yuck" and "fuck" is so good too. Genuinely, my only criticism is that the song is too short. Just give us another verse and it would've been perfect. Charles knows her way around a hook and I'm sure the song would've been even better with more.

Yuck and Used To Know Me getting kicked the fuck out right before Top 30 was so necessary. Thank you, Jesus!

Next 5 eliminations should be Anti-Hero, Crash, Good Ones, Sorry If I Hurt You, and as much as I love them, one of the little two minute vignettes on Motomami could probably go next.

Yuck is so good, it has such a fun vibe and has a very tongue in cheek quality to it. Just a really fun song. I agree, if there was a remix planned I don’t want to know who it was because this really was a hit that got away. Any casual I’ve played it for has instantly latched onto it and guffawed at the ‘fuck’/‘yuck’ rhyming.

So happy to see Her sticking it out to the top 30, deserved.

Next 10 to go?:
Saoko
Candy
Church Girl
La Combi Versace
Plastic Off The Sofa
